WIP Mini Update:

Laser Teaser Time, got the material + particle effect done last night, here's an image of it in action. still needs to be attached to the gun however, so I'll post back later when I finish it up.

Looks nice... will the laser beam be only visible to the player, or to everyone? If it's the latter, will there be an option to flip the laser off?

forgot to add that I'm personally in the only you can see it camp, in case anyone's curious.

Sounds like it would be best that only you can see it since others may be distracted and mistake yours for their own.

Yeah that's very good point :)

 

Heh, I completely forgot about multiplier, and the potential effect of that. XD But yeah, either way works!

Yeah, visible to player only would be best. I'm not sure how many players we're looking at here when MP comes around but imagine these scattered beams weaving all over the place (Because when do players move 'slowly' or stay aiming in one direction for over two seconds?). It would be like a rave party. At the same time, no NPC laser sights.

Yeah, npc's don't need laser sights to aim anyway lol. I'm just going to go with player only then, thanks for the input guys.

Also today SHOULD be the day that my buddy drops by with the camera so I'll post a video of that as soon as I can get my hands on it :)

Update April 7th:

My buddy is apparently insanely busy, and can not be bothered to drop off the camera stuff. I offered to drop by and pick it up in person, and was again met with resistance on his part. My guess is his school work is killing him atm, so I won't be pressing him further until he's ready. I don't want him having a panic attack or something lol. So it may be a while for the camera stuff unfortunately. Though on the bright side, his classes end in May, so it won't be too long before he can get things back to normal :)

 

Until he can pitch in, I'm just going to be focusing on asset creation for the next month or so. That way when he get's back I'll have plenty for him to do lol. Now if your curious as to what assets I'm going to be making: Materials, Textures, player models (body + clothes), gun models, building parts, and other things like that. I've got a growing checklist of things to do, and I'll just be working my way through it as I go along. Can't really give a time estimate, but I will probably be posting mini WIP Updates as I get things done just to keep you all up to date.

 

I hope you guys are not too bummed out about the delay, and I'll be on for while if anyone has any questions about anything. So feel free to ask away lol.

Question, you've probably said something about this before, but are you planning to be creating all assets from scratch? Or, since this isn't for a profit or anything, do you have any plans to simply take stuff from other sources to use? Be it animations, gun models, what have you.

I'm aiming at creating as much from scratch as possible, I might borrow simple things such as foliage and such, but like I said before I would prefer to have made most of the assets. Yeah it takes more time for things like that, but I want it mostly for the learning exp and such that I could then apply in my other project later down the line. I'm viewing it as an investment in the future lol.

Update April 8th:

Finished writing/story boarding the major elements of story/plot lead in for both the tutorial + the first Outbreak. I'm opting for keeping the story bits a surprise to avoid anything too spoiler-ish. Though I think I may end up doing a bit of back story for each character just to give you guys a taste. I'll also be doing a slightly more proper reveal so to speak on the Co-op campaign tomorrow so you guys can know what to expect once we kick things into full gear. Feels good to finally put on my serious Dev hat lol.

 

btw first Outbreak Campaign will be drop in drop out style Co-op for up to two players. Once environments are properly fleshed out, a sandbox level will done to incorporate more free form and possibly(depends on who you play with lol) VS multiplayer play that was mentioned initially for this.

 

Now as to why the focus is on a story segment before the Sandbox mode that we originally intended to start out with? The answer was that we simply wanted the player(s) to know why they are where they are, why things are the way the are, and basically just help them understand the environment/lore. We both believe that immersion is a key factor in games of this nature, and to give you anything less would just be lazy on our parts. Plus a lot of you have been asking for some single player stuff anyway and this would definitely cover that request :)

As long as we get both a naive, innocent character, and a kick-ass, bad-ass character. ^^ Question, what are your plans for character dialog? Be it voiced somehow, or text on the screen. Dialog during sex events? Just Dialog during normal stuff? Short statements for finding a weapon or something? Like how it is in L4D. Or the silent protagonist route? Honestly, I think silent might be good. I know that the flash game, "Cora'splatformer," over on the legend of krystal site, eventually added in dialog, and completely ruined it for me. Before, I could rp all sorts of different characters, different reasons for being there, different reactions, and motivations. But then dialog was added, and it was just  "LOL! SEX! LOL YEAH CUM ON ME." And it completely ruined the game for me.

 

Edit: Oh, and by the way, when it comes to sex sounds, I honestly don't mind there not being a female voice. When it comes to the sounds for a sex scene in a sex game, priority for me is: The "squish" sound. You know what I mean. The sound of the two actually fucking. Be it "smack smack smack" or "Squish squish squish" or "shlick shlick shilck," or even get fancy, with some "Smack shlick squish shlick smack squish." :P > The male sounds, of grunting, roaring, etc. Made more priority, if it is some sort of monster. > Female sounds. Screams, moans, cries, etc. > Female dialog > Male dialog.

 

But yes, this all sounds wonderful. Looking forward to it very much. ^^ Maybe even the multiplayer. :P

Yeah voice sounds are always kinda difficult without proper actors. Dialogue between players while wandering around, will like you said be similar to L4D. That said there will be some cut scene like moments where you meet new characters and such. Just to help the story along.

 

And yes voices/dialogue will be handled with text, until I can maybe afford proper voice actors/volunteers. As for player personalities that's a bit up for debate with us atm, but we will likely have an answer for you guys a bit later down the line.

 

Personally, I wanted to do a mostly silent protagonist. He wants more of a mass  effect vibe, but idk...I feel like you can't relate as much with your character when they say something that you feel takes you out of it (it being your version of said character). If you guys have opinions though I'm open to suggestions on that :)

 

As for sex sounds, I was thinking basic sound effects + moans and such. As again, I'm all for the mostly silent protagonist.

And yup yup. Sex sounds are key. Moans, completely optional. Actual sex dialog, I'd prefer there be none. 

 

Don't get me wrong. A mass effect type thing is great. But that is a BIG undertaking. And is a big focus. And just, yeah. Don't think it seems right for this particular game. But I don't know the entire dev plan or anything.

I agree with you about the sex dialogue as well.

 

And yeah I agree, he wants a lot of dialogue and such for it. And it's just not needed for a project like this in my opinion. Too much work to be done when it could be much simpler, and then we could focus on more important things. But I digress, I'll talk to him for a bit tomorrow and hopefully be able to persuade him off it. We'll see though lol.

Hey about that announcement, well apparently I wasn't supposed to say anything about it just yet. So I regret to inform you that any promised info will now be withheld until he feels it more appropriate/finalized. I also realized that for him to have known that I spoke about it, he must have finally made an account here. So maybe now I can get him to pop in for a bit every once in a while lol.

I negotiated the mass effect stuff down, so as to simplify things a bit. You'll still be able to interact + ask/answer questions with certain npc's, but nothing too fancy or dramatic. Oh and a bit of good news, I think I got the character customization bits figured out, and now I just need to make the assets to see if I can get it all working. So body + head modeling will be my main focus starting today, and I'm sure you guys will enjoy those pics/updates a lot more than anything else I come up with anyway :P

Ok, it's cool if I talk about the main characters now, will do a brief write up/summary for each character once a day (I meant once a week sry about that lol) until I run out of people. Granted there aren't too many main characters, but it'll give you a good idea of who you are/will be dealing with in the game. Expect part one tonight :)

Character Bio Part 01

 

Name: Alex Conway

Nickname: Conway

Ethnicity: White

Age: 45

 

Occupation: Body Guard

Physical Description: Tall with a muscled build. Numerous tattoos on his arms, shoulder, and back.

Hair Style: Mohawk (Small/Short, not the long pointy kind)

Facial Hair: Stubble + Goatee

Clothing: Often dressed in combat gear including an armored chest piece, boots, and gloves. It should be noted that he very rarely wears anything with sleeves as they would look too "fancy". Also wears an odd collar around his neck at all times.

 

Family: N/A

Religion: Christian

Pets: Vulture named Lenny

 

Personal Bio: Alex Conway was hired shortly after Dr. Isis gave birth to her twin daughters, though he was present throughout her pregnancy. He was brought on to watch and oversee all activities for her two youngest daughters and even protect them if need be.

 

He is immensely loyal to the doctor and extremely protective of her two twins. As a result of this he has a tendency to "overreact" to any potential threats. Initial records showed that he was once suffering from both depression and alcoholism, but has since been able to rise above them.

 

That said, he has become a fairly respected and well liked man among the newer Global Horizons employee's. His light hearted nature, and love of a good time makes him a great guy to have around. He is however very competitive and known to never turn down or back away from a challenge. This aggressive behavior is lost almost instantly in the presence of Dr Isis, as he takes on a much more mature tone. This has lead some to believe that he and the Doctor were close, but he has denied any involvement.

 

Information regarding his past prior to work with the Doctor was classified, but older employees all show an extreme distrust and hatred to the man despite his honest and generally kind behavior. It should also be noted that he has frequently remarked about numerous locations and planets when drunk which implies he used to travel quite a bit in whatever employment he had before.

 

Skills: Has an accomplished knowledge of guns and other weaponry. Has also shown to be a fairly skilled pilot of both land and air vehicles. He seems to be capable of basic field dressings (medic) as well.

 

What other Characters have to say:

Sara Isis: "He's just a dog on my mother's leash."

Dr. Isis: "There are very few trustworthy men in this line of work, even fewer that are as capable as Alex"

Security Lt. Alexei: "Alex Conway is a man of obvious skill and experience, but with no history to find out why..."

All that done, I think this was a pretty good write up (avoiding spoilers is hard work lol). So I hope you guys enjoyed it as I'm going to be doing one of these every Tuesday for each main character.

Update April 10th:

Got the base model for the body done. Just need to take that into zbrush and start sculpting it out now. Not enough free time to get started today unfortunately, but it's moving along lol.

 

Also any feedback on the character bio that I did a few posts back? Is it something you guys view as worth doing once a week?

To be honest, I'm not even sure where all of these fleshed out characters come into play. I was picturing a sandbox style, l4d/day z type game... mostly with the character alone, or with other players, combating enemies. So I'm really not sure what to say. My entire perception of the game is now shifted! Not a bad thing... but yeah. XD

Remember that Co-op line I oops-ed earlier? That's what this will be rolling up to :)

Want to explain more, but I'm being told not to. Very conflicted here lol.

 

How about this I tell you guys in detail about what we are aiming for with the Co-op, AND you guys agree that said information is subject to change over the course of the Dev. That way you guys resist the right to get all angry like he keeps thinking you'll get if we cut specific features before release, and I get to tell you all what's going on. A win for everyone lol.

 

I keep telling him it won't likely be an issue since you guys are pretty cool/understanding, but he disagrees. I really need to get him posting and getting to know you guys a lil' better so stuff like this can be avoided lol.

Sorry for the most fail PR ever that I've got going on here atm. I haven't been clear enough about what was going on and for that I apologize if I've managed to confuse anyone lol. Things are a bit confusing for me as well since I have my way of doing things, and my friend has his own way. Which atm, is causing some problems unfortunately. I like doing honest dev work, and keeping secrets about this just kinda irked me the wrong way. Too confusing for my own tastes, and probably too hard to follow things for you guys.

 

He came on board with his own ideas/requests that in turn became the Campaign that I've mentioned. Priorities are definitely a bit different now sure, but the core elements of this game's ideas/play style will still remain before anyone gets too worried about that.

 

So I'm going to be honest with you guys right now, Goal #1 is to work on the Campaign/Co-op. Goal #2 is to work on the multiplayer that the front page describes. I'll be announcing the rest of the Campaign details tomorrow afternoon since I'm getting off work early. While my friend may have a problem with that, idc this is still my project and I'm putting my foot down lol.

 

So to summarize this whole business:

I've been holding off on commenting on the character bio since I was waiting to see how it goes, but guess I might as well...

 

I don't have any issue at all with the first release focusing on campaign/co-op - either would be fun. I could think of some arguments as to why it would be better to do multi-player first (creating a proper campaign probably takes longer than MP if you don't have to do the netcode etc (which the UDK already provides, I think), or that MP offers more replay value)... but the long and the short of it is, it's fine.*

 

What *has* me worried a bit is that that character bio looks a an awful lot like the stereotypical McBuff Protagonist. A male one. Which could mean that RoL isn't part of the campaign**. And I'd have to lie to say that I wouldn't be disappointed a bit if that were the case*, as my thinking about Outbreak was "yay, finally a 3D game with gameplay and RoL", with the RoL being a rather important, integral part of it which set it apart from your normal shooter. Obviously it's your choice, and I'd still look forward to the game.

 

*Getting angry cause someone that is developing a free game decides to change some things mid-development? That would be extremely ridiculous. Not to mention, immature. And stupid. And... you get the idea ;-). Your game, your decision.

Yeah that's not who you will be playing as. The two playable characters will be women. I'm going to be doing a nice write up starting now and hopefully get this sh!t explained properly. Also not sure what RoL means. So I can't comment on that without someone explaining that part lol. But anyway, thanks for the support, I feel like a bit of a dick atm and hope I can make it up to you guys :)

 

So like I said, will be starting the write up right now and hopefully put some fears to rest.
