Soap desu Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 The above sounds good, I to now have to play the don't starve game LOL. And thanks for the X360 controller support, my tendinitis thanks you lol.
Anon989 Posted May 29, 2013 Author Posted May 29, 2013 The above sounds good, I to now have to play the don't starve game LOL. And thanks for the X360 controller support, my tendinitis thanks you lol. Yeah I prefer controllers too, it's just more comfy, especially with the 360 controller. They made that thing really well in my opinion. Also no Bio today as I'm moving them to Wednesday from now on. I'll also be updating the front page again tomorrow to reflect the changes that we've had, and I'll be updating the blog too since I haven't done that in ages lol. Aside from that, I've been keeping busy with some prototypes that I've been making for this, and I will hopefully get them coded (as soon as my friend is free) and ready to show in the coming weeks.
Anon989 Posted May 30, 2013 Author Posted May 30, 2013 Hey got mugged by my family for some family outing time, and after that my gf was being super clingy. So long story short, I got nothing done today, lol. I have tomorrow off though, so I'll get everything all set then. Sorry about the delay again. I swear it's like they know...Maybe I should say I'll do it Tuesday, then just always do the bios on Wednesday? Maybe that will throw them off lol.
dmen77 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 I was about to say. No updates, but you always had free time Wed. so I believed it would be alright, but it seems coincidence came back and bit ya.
Anon989 Posted May 30, 2013 Author Posted May 30, 2013 Character Bio Part 07 Name: Issac Graves Nickname: Grimm Ethnicity: White Age: ??? Occupation: Ex UEF 1rst Generation Ghost, Current Raven Mercenary Physical Description: Severely Scarred, muscular build Hair Style: Short Buzzed Facial Hair: 5 o'clock shadow Clothing: Usually fully suited up in his custom Ghost Gear Family: Maria Graves, Kerri Graves Religion: ??? Pets: Imaginary(?) Talking dog named Mr. Bojangles Personal Bio: Joined the UEF Military during the height of the Old Republic Wars, where he soon volunteered into for the (at the time experimental) Ghost Program. The program took in normal humans with the intent of implanting devices to augment not only their physical prowess, but their psychic potential as well. Once on board, he was joined with seven other recruits who had volunteered as well. It was here he met a woman by the name of Maria. The two shared a great deal in common and together they seemed to be able to endure the often times disturbing procedures the UEF Scientists had in store for them. Several years went by and it soon became apparent that the side effects of the 1rst Generation Ghost program were becoming a very realistic danger to them. The implants were too primitive in their design, so while they boosted the patients abilities dramatically, they also put an insane amount of stress on their brains. This led 2 volunteers to be committed to a mental asylum, and another 2 to suicide. Now down to 3 remaining prospects: Issac, Maria, and a man by the name of Ziah. Testing began to pick up quite a bit again, but with a new found focus on the three of them. During this time Maria's relationship with Issac was becoming distracting to the scientists tests. They did see an opportunity to test another possibility however. They offered Maria a chance not only marry the man she had come to love, but also to consummate their marriage. They wanted to test the effects of the implants on the development of children, and that this would likely be the only way for her to leave before the final stages of the program were completed. Issac and Maria accepted the offer, and she was soon shipped off world to begin her new life. Issac would meet up with her as soon as he survived these tests they had left for him. These remaining tests while extremely dangerous and at times bordering on insane, were done. Both he and Ziah had survived, but before they were released they had one last test. This would be a live test against Republic soldiers that had invaded one of the UEF colony worlds. So the two were dispatched and given all the equipment they needed to accomplish their objective of terminating the lead researchers and officers located at the stolen base. Using their advanced abilities to infiltrate the facilities there, they immediately set about purging the building. With the alarms disabled they killed every man and woman located within. The Republic troops had no chance against them, and most were eliminated without much effort. Eventually, Issac and Ziah split up to locate the final officer, but this is when Issac would find the only real resistance that the facility had to offer. He had come up against an oddly armored woman who looked similar to the conventional Republic special forces, but this one quickly shown that she was different. She was able to keep up with him, and evade all his attacks, almost as if she had some sort of ESP. Thinking that the Republic had been researching something similar to the UEF's Ghosts, he knew this woman had to be taken out. Almost 30 minutes of fighting went on, with the two evenly matched, and unable to gain any ground. It was here that Issac turned to his strongest abilities, the ones that the scientists noted as unstable and incredibly dangerous. His power now multiplied to insane levels, he quickly smashed the woman around the room with little effort. He enjoyed this immensely, even if he didn't want to admit it. The implants were driving him on a rampage, and when his partner Ziah returned and stopped him, he realized that he had been brutally destroying the woman. Not happy to still see her moving, he decided to end this so they could be done with this place. He knocked her onto her back and then set about cracking open her helmet. He made sure to keep his foot pressing down on her chest, still enjoying watching her squirm in pain. This woman had to die, no she NEEDED to die, he could hear the voices that drove the other recruits to madness, but he didn't care. Consumed by his lust for violence he tore off her helmet and quickly readied his gun to fire, but he stopped just short of it. The woman he was fighting, no killing, was Maria. He almost instantly went into shock, and demanded to know why she would be here, and why she would be fighting him. She was obviously too far gone to give a proper answer, but she still managed to reply: "Because you had to die.". He snapped, and when he finally came to he found himself a world away with the names and locations of the scientists that had arranged all this. Vowing to set things right again, he went out to join the newly reformed Ravens Mercenary group, as they had the resources he needed to get back at the UEF. Of course with his power, he rose up to be one of the most highly regarded and feared mercs out there. Only thing really stopping him at all was the rate at which he could feel his sanity slipping away. Luckily he met a friendly dog by the name of Mr. Bojangles who has since been at his side making sure he doesn't get too crazy. After all, you can always trust talking dogs right? What other Characters have to say: Leon Armstrong: "A sacrifice for the greater good." Maria Graves: "He's just a big softy when you really get to know him...(laughs)" Security Lt. Alexei: "You know I heard he's the reason Ghosts are outfitted with kill switches now."
Anon989 Posted May 30, 2013 Author Posted May 30, 2013 Well that was a long one! lol. I'll probably do another little faction writeup later today as well. Then I'm going to be aiming to finish up my take two(or was it three?) of the body/head model as I really just want that done so I can get a move on with other things. edit forgot to add that I'll be updating the main post here and blog like I mentioned before. Going to my doctor appointment first, and then when I get back I'll get those fixed up.
Anon989 Posted May 30, 2013 Author Posted May 30, 2013 Hey guys I 4got to add that I've changed the armor/clothing setup as well. It now works like so: Each article of clothing/armor has two stats: Defense = How much it reduces damage (Using a percent scale, so 100% would negate all damage and 0% would offer no protection), and how much damage it can take before getting all ripped up. Shields = Provides a much smaller protection for both you and your clothing. It regenerates when not in combat, so people can try to avoid having to constantly worry about their clothing. It gives you a bit more wiggle room to make mistakes that don't immediately screw you for a portion of the game. Also different by demand of my coder is the simplification of the defensive equipment slots. Now there will only be: Headgear, and full body clothes. What I mean by that last one is that the clothing will break as one, he really doesn't want the separate parts for the top and bottom clothing pieces. Which is a bit of a bummer to me, but it will speed things up as we don't have to do some other things/calculations/coding so that's a win I guess right? btw Sorry in advance if that bothers anyone, as I had to make compromise, but I think this new system will still be alright.
dmen77 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Yeah, this makes sense from a simplicity standpoint and make everything easier. Hey, now you can make something close to the zero suit for the game. PS I am loving the humor. Mr. Bojangles is absolutely fabulous. YES!
Anon989 Posted May 31, 2013 Author Posted May 31, 2013 Yeah, this makes sense from a simplicity standpoint and make everything easier. Hey, now you can make something close to the zero suit for the game. PS I am loving the humor. Mr. Bojangles is absolutely fabulous. YES! I figured a borderline insane character with insane power and an extremely troubled past, needs something to lighten the mood. Plus it works with his overall theme of being completely nuts. Also glad to see the change isn't bothering ya, I was worried some people would be pissed Yeah btw, a zero suit looking costume is definitely going to happen later on, so you'll be able to enjoy that when I get to it edit Also thinking of tearing down the blog and remaking it so everything is all nice and neat there. I wanted to do this to accommodate the character profiles/factions that I've been detailing so I can build up a nice little knowledge resource for all the Outbreak Characters/Lore. This is spurred on mostly due to the fact that main post is ballooning in length with the new character profiles that I've been adding, which makes tracking down specific parts a bit more annoying than it should be lol.
Anon989 Posted May 31, 2013 Author Posted May 31, 2013 Super Random Update: Night Vision WIP, sounds messed up during the render, but luckily you don't need that to see what it's doing. And for those curious, it's only like halfway done atm in this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1QRzi1Ty4U&feature=youtu.be
Soap desu Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Night vision WIP looks good, but maybe a bit blurry; could just be video compression.
Anon989 Posted June 2, 2013 Author Posted June 2, 2013 Night vision WIP looks good, but maybe a bit blurry; could just be video compression. Yeah I had a good amount of motion blur to make it look/act like actual night vision where there's that small delay between what it's seeing. Though I'll probably end up toning it down if it becomes too distracting/problematic later on. Also a bit of news, I'm momentarily pausing the dev on this for a few days or so. My friend/coder wants to go over EVERYTHING before we get started, so I'm going to be working some things out with him, and then we'll hopefully be back on track. Although it seems like his primary concern is the campaign he wanted earlier, so I'm expecting something to change with that as he seems to have changed his mind on some things. Though I may be just jumping to conclusions so feel free to read too much/too little into what I'm saying here lol.
Anon989 Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 Yo just checking in to say that I'm not dead, and that we'll be back to work on Monday
Anon989 Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 Went and finally spent the time to really redo the blog, so check it out and let me know how it holds up. http://outbreakgame.blogspot.com/ edit also going to be shifting some things around here as well, but I'll let you know when I start getting to that.
Nonsense667 Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 It looks good, but I have to say, especially those last two images of your slide at the top, give the site a way too "sterile, clean" look, hah. Though you may be going for a bit of irony there.
Anon989 Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 It looks good, but I have to say, especially those last two images of your slide at the top, give the site a way too "sterile, clean" look, hah. Though you may be going for a bit of irony there. lol yeah, not sure if you noticed, but I was building it off a template. I mention wanting someone to do some art for the slides so I can replace them. Normally I'd just make it myself, but beyond setting up blogger stuff, I just can't bring myself to do too much given how sick I've been the last few days. Did I mention that? Well if not now I did, it's part of the reason we're on break here atm lol. It's funny I usually get sick like 3 times a year, but now I'm up to like 4 or 5 times already this year, and it's really lame lol. btw the layout and everything seemed alright though? Let me know if I oopsed anywhere
Anon989 Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 Hey so this may just me being bored/sick, but I think I'm going to be doing quite a bit of writing for the Locations/Factions this weekend. Nothing too extensive mind you, but just some nice little summaries to help give some idea of what they are. So I guess I'm saying to expect that this weekend then lol.
Anon989 Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Locations Part 01 Name: Korhal Type: Terrestrial Planet Information: Discovered during the second wave of Colony Ships fleeing the on going conflicts at home between the Republic and UEF. Korhal seemed like an ideal world, a rarity in these times, but due to the colonists lack of credits, they were still subject to hard times. It wasn't until the Global Horizons company offered to help them in exchange for ownership of their planet that things began to turn around for them. The colonists and Global Horizons Director Robert agreed with the condition that the well being of the people living there would be the primary concern should something go awry. Name: City of Korhal Information: A city built on the Black Sea by the Global Horizons company. It features everything it's people could need: a Hospital (Mercy Hospital), a police force, a school and college, a growing agricultural sector, and all the other necessities that it's people had come to need. Also unique to the city was that all businesses worked under the Global Horizons banner, making every man, woman, or child born there an eventual Global Horizons employee. Despite the ample opportunity for GH (Global Horizons) to abuse their unique position, they had kept their deal, and let the city and it's people prosper under their rule. A few unique notes about this place: It's always raining thanks to it being the rainy season in Korhal atm. Likely choice for the sandbox section of the game. Though initial Outbreaks will focus on individual area such as the Hospital, College, or Police station. Name: UnderCity Information: It wasn't until after Director Roberts death, that things began to change. During the attack that claimed his life, many of the citizens were lead down into an experimental area for shelter. This area which normally was used simply as a waste management and sewer run off, had an incredibly unique quality. Despite being an underwater/underground dome, the UnderCity had been used for the experimental creation of a false sky, simulated day and night cycle, and even had it's own rain storms. These were all automated and powered by three large reactor stations that were spread about the area. The people now aware of it's location began living there as well with the GH company allowing it to help test it's effects. Unfortunately test was eventually deemed harmful to those living there when the filters on the water table had proved faulty. The area was then subsequently abandoned and stripped bare for anything useful. Leaving the large concrete shells of buildings scattered about in this now dead part of the city. During this time, a growing criminal influence had claimed the area, and established a Red Light District of sorts. GH police forces moved to shut it down, but they were halted by it's Director Dr. Isis. She agreed to allow them to continue working in that area, but with the condition that all drugs and illicit activities be kept below. This made crime above almost nonexistent, and with Security Check points at the Elevator to the UnderCity, crime on Korhal was seemingly under control. Once the virus erupted in the city, the people in the UnderCity believed they were safe. Though it was only a matter of time until the toxic cocktail of sexual fluids and viral effects washed down into the sewers and claimed their water. The filters long since left in a state of disrepair, did nothing to stop the virus from spreading into not only their drinking water, but the rain itself! Making life in the area incredibly dangerous, but that didn't stop things from getting worse. With the virus spreading, power was lost in many areas leaving some locations in total darkness at night. A few unique notes about this place: The UnderCity has a Day/Night cycle, random rain storms (Which are hazardous to the player), and different enemies based on the time of day. edit btw Will be announcing the changes to the Campaign later today. I'm actually pretty happy about what we did to it
Anon989 Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Korhal... now THAT's a familiar name There's a Mercy Hospital in there too lol. Hooray for references
Anon989 Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 Ok Campaign time: Q: How's it going to work? A: You'll select an Outbreak Scenario from a list of a available options, and then you can play away till your hearts content. Each Outbreak will be it's own Scenario involving you (Still playing a one of the Isis Twins that you create at the beginning), and one or two story characters that may assist you, need help, etc... Q: So what will we be doing in these Scenarios? A: Each Scenario will task you with escaping various locations either by yourself or with up to 4 other players. This will involve things like puzzles, combat, and even some boss fights. Q: Wait it's up to 4 players now? A: Yup, and the enemy/item count will scale with the the number of players. Q: But there's only two Isis Twins? A: First off thank you for paying attention , and second, we figured the gameplay benefit out placed the lore break. I hope you guys understand, just imagine the other two people are just some random people helping out Q: What will we be fighting? A: Infected people, UEF soldiers, and Raiders will make up a good amount of the enemies. Q: Will there be any XP systems in place? A: We thought about this, but ultimately decided to NOT do anything with this to preserve the balance for any future play through. That said, we'll likely give points for doing tasks in game to unlock things like costumes and such. Q: How big of a role will hunger play in this? A: Just the same as we spoke of before, but levels will have renewable food sources for a price should you use all the available food on the map. Q: Do we have money then if we can buy food? A: Yeah kinda, remember those points I mentioned earlier? Well they can also be used to buy health, antivirus, ammo, and food/drink at various Vending Machines. Though I'll likely add a point bonus for completing the Scenario without buying extra resources. Q: Will infection still have any role in this? A: Yup you still get to turn on your friends once you succumb to the virus. Although the game ends once all players turn. Q: Will there still be good and bad ends? A: Yup, though they won't be done until after a scenario is all good and done with testing/content. Gameplay stuff always comes first. edit Forgot to list the pro's of doing it this way: Less time consuming! Less work! Bigger Focus on level design that tells a story rather than say, a cinematic and such More Variety in both the levels and the enemies as things no longer need to be connected as you'd see in traditional story modes Only downside is the lack of a true cohesive story that comes with traditional campaigns/story modes, but the amount of extra work needed would likely end up leaving me exhausted lol. That and I think a L4D style storytelling would fit fine for this anyway. end edit With that said I believe that about covers everything on this in particular, but now the character creation options have been tweaked a bit too. Weight is now going to be one of the adjustments that you can mess with, and it will effect your characters health/stamina. Also adding a specialty choice to help give your characters a little bit of an edge in certain areas by giving them alternate unarmed attacks and special starting equipment. I'll explain this a bit more come Monday when I get to work on some things, but just wanted to give you guys a glimpse into what I'm doing.

That sort of "left4dead but a sandbox instead" play style sounds like it should be fun to play around it.
banshe Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 If you want to add lore and background information that fleshes out the story for players without the use of cinematic and such, is to instead provide story and lore through on level collectibles, like notepads or diary pages and such, that give information on not only the the Isis family but also other sides of the conflict (say if there is a map inside a lab where the infection was made, why not a lab report on a notepad detailing information on the virus's background?). That allows you to flesh out the universe around the players, at, arguably, no effort at all. And maybe if players feel like collecting these, you can award them with points for each, encouraging players to learn more about the story at the same time.

Anon989 Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 Hey I'm no longer working Mondays due to one of my co-workers always picking fights with me lol. Soo I'm going to be doing some stuff early, or at least after the xbox presentation going on right now lol. Dem graphics for that new MGS are insane...
