I would like to change the look of my goat.

I have started doing an animal follower, specifically a goat follower, according to Darkfox127's tutorial on the subject. I'm not quite done but so far, so good. I would be very interested in changing his looks somewhat just to make him easier to recognize when he stands next to a domestic goat. I don't need anything spectacular. While I have found many a tutorial on changing weapons and armors I've not seen anything on this.

To make the follower I had to effectively copy a goat (the wild one if it makes a difference) and make an entirely new race. To be honest I'm not entirely sure where to even find the meshes and textures I would need to alter this particular goat without changing all the wild goats in Skyrim (which would defeat my purpose of making him stand out). I am open to any suggestion but, in fairness, when it comes to this stuff I am still a noob. Please be gentle, use simple, clear and precise instructions and/or point me at a tutorial (s) that will do the same.

Thanks in advance.

Using xEdit:

1) Go the the race record for your goat, look for the "worn armor"

2) Make a copy of that and rename it for your goat.

3) Make the race record reference the new armor

4) Go to the new goat armor and make a copy of the Armor Addon/ARMA

5) Make the new Armor Addon reference a new goat model (goat_new.nif or whatever).  Model name really doesn't matter.

6) Make sure the worn armor references the new ARMA/Armor addon.

7) Make sure the "Armor Race" at the bottom of xEdit's Race screen points to normal goats.

Eight) (Fucking unwanted emojis...) Open Outfit studio

9) Under file -> settings, set the reference skeleton to the goat skeleton (you can make a custom one if you want, but for now use the normal one, file path is in the race record)

10) Exit Outfit Studio (I have found the changes don't necessarily apply without a reload)

11) Re-open Outfit Studio, load a basic goat model as a reference, rename the model (ref or something) and then load a normal goat body as the outfit.

12) Edit as needed.

13) export as Goat_new.nif (or whatever you want), make sure the file name is the same as you selected for the ARMA/Armor Addon.

That should do it.  Edit to your heart's content.

If goat is intended to be active with MNC/Creature Framework, he will need to be added to that (separate post)

EDIT: I should mention that if all you want is a unique-looking goat, the new race isn't necessary.  You can just give it a unique worn armor.

So, as part of making the new race I have already copied the armor and armor addon for the goat and saved them, IIRC, as goatfollower and goatfolloweraa, and included those for the race. If so, does that mean I can actually start with step 7? Yes, the references have been made from the armor to the armor addon. Darkfox127 was very specific and took a good deal of time going through that part.

Yup

I warned you I was a noob in this regard. Is this what you're talking about for Step 7?

Yes, make sure the "Armor Race" links to that, else your goat won't have a body.  (I mean you can link things so that he does, but that's the long way around.  Just set this and there's no other hoops that need jumping through).

That is the information from Skyrim as opposed to this:

which shows the information from the esp including the new race.

Not sure if there's a question in there... I would change anything the CK kicks back as "DUPLICATE", just for the sake of clarity, but other than that, nothing looks amiss (of course, that image doesn't show much.)

What I was talking about on step 7 was this:

Spoiler

Capture.JPG.b1b278cfbed0d3ecf422dc8b0ad6c898.JPG

... which is at the absolute bottom of the race record.  If you set that to the normal goat, then the new race will inherit any goat accessories, etc without needing modification.

Not that I am aware of any goat accessories mind you, but just in case there are some.

But is that the base race in Skyrim or the new GoatRace in my .esp which was the question I was trying to ask/show.

Base race.  By setting that, the new goat race automatically adopts any goat gear.

Thanks, I'm tired and afraid I'll make mistakes so I'll get on this tomorrow.

Okay, good luck.

I'm going away from my computer for a few days, so I hope to return to news of a new and absolutely fabulous goat in town.

Or... whatever. :P

I lol'd at the title

Are you going to use a custom mesh or just the texture?

Anyway, good luck with your goat dude

Just the texture. As I said in a post above, I don't want or need anything spectacular, just something that makes him stand out.

As @donttouchmethere said above: "That's something you don't hear that often :goat:"

I warned you I was a noob at this. I changed the skeleton, no problem. Where do I find "a basic goat model" and "A normal goat body" to load. I opened the new project but I have no idea where to find this despite spending a good deal of time browsing.\

Once again, thanks in advance.

The ONLY goat models I could find were with MoreNastyCritters. Using that I got this (he's simply several shades lighter than the standard goat):

I put it back, with a new name, in MNC. Is that really all I need to do to make that work?

Also, you're right that I can't get MNC to work with this goat. How do I put him in MNC?
