Sharing Mod Setups - Possible?

I've been thinking about the idea of sharing whole setups.  I think it might work if both parties use the same mod installer software.

1st -- assume the latest SKSE is installed and configured with skse.ini as a prerequisite.

2nd -- clearly specify the DLC needed

3rd -- avoid any ENB-related esp files

Now in ModOrganizer (for example), zip the Mod folder into an archive file.  Then share that file.  Shouldn't the recipient be able to replace their Mod folder with the unzipped one they received?

I think it could work, but I'm probably missing something crucial or people would already be doing this.

With MO you could just share the Mod folder and Profile to keep the correct mod order and load order. The biggest problem would be probably the size of the archive. Sharing a 100 GB (and I'm very modest here) file isn't that easy. :)

Keep in mind, you can't share a setup like that here at LL.  We don't allow bundling of mods without mod authors permission.

Well, sure.  I knew that.

I'm talking about when you want your friend to be able to play your setup and they are hopeless at setting things up on their own.   The size seems to be the main issue.  Most of my favorite profiles run around 30 GB, so I suppose I could compress to around 10 GB and use a cloud drive to transport the files.

Or make a torrent, are torrents too old these days? They're the best for giant folders because they transfer piece by piece and never corrupt or error out, and the files are just going from you to your friend without needing anyone else to host them. I'm only speaking in theory though, since talking about sharing mod files between people at all has gotten really taboo. There is however a brand new service for doing this within the established rules of the Skyrim mod kingdom, Automaton, which seems to let you write configs for mod setups and the mods' download links into a script that'll install Mod Organizer and all the mods in the right order and junk, so all your friends can use the setup you've perfected without any socially frowned upon file sharing.

But nobodies going to tell you "don't copy that floppy" if you'd rather simply hand stuff straight to your friends, just don't upload mod installs to public websites.

With MO/MO2 you could just post your loadorder, modlist, and plugin text files in the profiles/[profile name] directory. People can refer to the second file to determine what mods they need to download themselves and then put all three text files into their own profile for MO/MO2 so it auto sorts based on them.

For the transfer of the files one option depending on other things of course is to copy the files onto either a smart card or usb stick and mail them to the person.  Not a option many think of now but considering that many online hosts do a max of 20-30gb or so for the free accounts then want to charge per month after that, it could be an option.

I checked out Automatron and it looks like it will be a neat tool.  But it still leaves a lot for the user to do.  I really like the idea of putting files on USB stick or I could loan one of my portable USB hard drives (it's amazing how cheap they are getting).  Just showing the mod list might work but I'm not even sure I remember all of the tweaks necessary--

  • ini file tweaks,
  • configuring MO
  • SKSE folder,
  • set max framerate to 60 fps
  • choose and create a body shape
  • run Bodyslide on all relevant mods
  • run FNIS
  • and I've even edited a couple mods to add heel sounds and to modify gag talk

I think I've also overlooked the in-game configuration of the mods themselves.  So many settings that can change the gameplay.  I think once the other setup id done they might have to start with one of my save games that's already configured.

If you are talking enb as well, then quite a few of those ini tweaks could be pc specific, same goes for some of the ini tweaks as well from what I remember reading, and using the wrong ones can cause problems.

As long as the mods in modlist would be named correctly and no patches/addons were merged into them, this would work too. It would be more work for the person sharing it though as way too many mod patches/addons don't follow any naming convention so this would need to be corrected for the end user to be able to even find it. Any custom edits, or mod folders like "FNIS Output" etc. would need to be done by the end user or shared through MEGA or whatever.

That's actually the point. As @gregathit has told us before, mod packages are not supported by LL and they're too easily outdated when even one mod is updated. Not to mention the lengths some mod authors will go to in order to stop unauthorized sharing of their work. It would be better for users to learn where to find the individual mods and to track any updates made to them so they can easily update without relying on others to do it for them.

And as @Varithina mentioned, ini tweaks are simply too specific to individual PCs to be universal. Some are fairly universal (the SKSE memory patch) but may still need to be adjusted slightly. But most are unique to the PC they're created on and can't be shared successfully. Just one improper ini entry can send the house of cards that is a modded Skyrim crashing. And figuring out which ini file has a bad entry, and which entry specifically is bad, can drive anyone mad.

It's actually not that much harder than what a lot of people do already: share their mod load and order. The method I mentioned would actually take away the need to manually sort plug-ins that LOOT doesn't touch because the text files make MO/MO2 sort them automatically. It's not perfect, but no method is.
