Total War: ? Which is Worth the Price?

I want to play a really good strategy game but damn I really don't want to pay over a $150 for it! If I do, I want to make sure I'm getting one of the best out of all of them. I'm really wanting to play TW: Warhammer 1 or 2. Any suggestions on which? Or maybe a comparable alternative? Thanks in advance.

Just buy either basic game first. You can get WH1 quite cheap to try it out first. You can then later buy WH2 for grand campaign access which requires owning both games. Or just buy WH2 straight away and play its own campaign. You can get bonus races and dlc later if you really get into it.

Personally i think best TW game is still Medieval 2 with Stainless steel mod but for new TW player i think Warhammer would be most appealing.

As per usual just wait for a sale. TW 1 and 2 are technically one game, so you're best left waiting to get the whole shebang, particularly in light of a bunch of balance changes in 1's factions are actually endemic to 2.

That one is actually the one I was going to get I think just to try it out. Haven't read about it being buggy or anything like some of the others.

If graphics isn't big deal to you then just get it and install Deus lo vult or Stainless steel modpack. SS is bit more advanced and grand.

Warhammers graphics aren't even that great anyway and monsters and magic dont bring much into gameplay really.

It all really depends on what you want in a strategy game. If you don't want all the magic mechanics then I would totally say go for Medieval 2 or Shogun 2. If you want guns then I would highly recommend Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai. But if you do want the magic Warhammer would be a good place to start.

Warhammer looks more like eye candy to me. It uses all the same game-play mechanics as the rest, right? I'll just jump in with Medieval 2 and put the others on my wishy list. They might be on sale some time soon with the release of Three Kingdoms coming in May.

Plus I just found this mod in development. I sure hope it becomes reality! Going back to Thedas with it would be sweet.

Get Medieval 2+DLC

And then figure out how to play

then

get this

One of the best mods made for any total war game, only matched by the lord of the rings mod (Third Age) for medieval 2. But personally love EB2...you can literally spend hours reading all the historical notes (that they often spent a lot of time reading actual historical books) and everything in the game and its a really well made mod.

I would sooner recommend Medieval II. You get the DLC for free with it now too. Then download the 4GB patch, and download mods. You can get the Rome 2 experience but historically accurate. Shogun 2, Warhammer, Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, Zelda, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Three Kingdoms, and more for free.
