Strange CTDs (bodyslide build?)

Hello everyone

(This is my 1st post, so please be patient)

I am having CTDs and i don't know why, what i know is that they are caused by a "mod" which is a bodyslide build of some DD related items, because if i untick it (i'm using MO) the CTDs don't occur. Also if matters the ctds don't occur when i launch the game, but around 20 sec after the save is successfully loaded.

Y tho...?

I know that the build/mod in question is conflicting with items from DD mods, but that should not be the problem because the killer-mod as higher priority (if i set it lower the items do not appear in-game, but still- CTD).

Do you have any solution, did this ever happen to you?

Before you ask:

I use CBBE

I did run LOOT

I used FNIS for users (in the right way)

I have the right skeleton (XPMSE)

I also have cleaned the save (even if the save is just 4h old)

I even cleaned the most problematic mods with TES5EDIT

The other mods that i have don't really mess with the player's body/mesh

Right now i'm to tired to keep looking for a solution, in the next days i'll do some more tests with new characters and post the results.

Thanks for your patience!

This is a synopsis of material that can be found in my blog so if you have questions you may want to start by looking at it (the link is in my signature below).

If your CTD occurs before you see the main screen it is likely due to a missing master. Your mod manager and LOOT should have identified that.

If your CTD occurs after the main menu but BEFORE the game actually starts your problem is likely too many animations. Unticking any mod that gives animations, including the one you described, should "fix" your problem.

If the CTD occurs after the game starts I would need more information about when the CTD occurs. Is it in a certain location, when you are doing particular things or what?

Ok, i made some progress, and the problem now changed (I removed ALL the mods' conflicts, and it didn't help)...

Some old mods with outdated scripts were killing my game, and now that i updated EVERY SINGLE MOD the ctd after 20 sec on load is not a thing anymore. Still, i cant say that now everything is ok, becouse the game requires a ridicolous amount of time to load and save (except for very small cell with very little npc), even if my computer is pretty good both in ram and video card, and from a week ago i even installed an SSD (in fact, very rarelly i experience frames drops). But as i said those times are way too long (>5 mins to save/load). Sometimes the load screen stays for that amount of time, other times (especially if using Alternate Start) the loading screen disappears quickly and the game freezes for the said amount of time to then start working completly. Other times the game just gives up and CTDs, not only on load but sometimes if i do different things quickly in a large cell (mostly outside). This makes me belive that the problem does not rely in incompatibilities or conflicts, and that is instead a more "technical" kind of problem...

With that said, my save file weights around 100mb after cleaning, which is pretty big but there a lot of people with bigger files that have no problems at all, so yet agaibg i have no clue on what the problem might be... maybe too many scripts running simultaniously?

A save of 100 MB is almost certainly corrupt (unless you're at level 80 or so, and even then it is likely corrupt). You can do all the usual things to try to fix your save game like running ReSaver (part of Fallrim Tools found on Nexus). However, you are well advised to simply dump that game and start over. You fixed the CTD on load and now you can see how your game runs. Besides, you stated that you have dropped a number of older mods from your load order. Whenever you change your load order (by adding mods, deleting mods or just running LOOT) you should start a new game.

The problem is that the save is already new... I made a backup save on the cell where you start with Alternate Start after having saved all the mods settings, and it already weights 100mb...

One thing i noticed is that in a more simple cell (super small cave with only 2 npcs) with the same character the save weights 60mb... so maybe the scripts that effect npcs (because in the alternate start's prison there are some enemy gosts) are bloating the save files?

I'm going to try to optimize the game in general right now, also using Psalam's guide (thank you very much!)

Did you run it from within MO and are you using LOOT and not the lite version which comes with MO?

And what way would that be?

And are you sure the skeleton has not been overwritten? How many bones does FNIS say your skellie has?

If you are trouble-shooting you should use new games. Saves contain data from prior to certain changes and cleaning only goes so far. Also if you don't know what you are doing then cleaning a save can wreck it.

Cleaning mods is not always a good thing, some mods don't like it. CTDs are seldom, if ever, down to dirty edits. In what way were these mods 'problematic'?

You cannot have an 'outdated' script and scripts seldom, if ever, cause CTDs.

Perhaps if you posted your plug-in list we would be able to proffer some further advice. Use LOOT to get the list.

Even if your PC is a flying machine, if Skyrim has not been properly prepared for modding then you will have all kinds of problems, e.g. CTDs and long load times. 100Mb save file is seriously wrong. My current quicksave.ess is 16.5Mb. That is for a level 50 character running around with 30-odd custom followers in tow.

It seems to me that you have fundamental problems in the way your game is set up. Untill you sort this out you will be chasing one problem after another.

If you have a 100mb savegame in the Alternate Start cell is evident that you have some big problem in your game, probably a bad mod or a collision by incompatibility. Publish your mod list or remove mods until the problem disappear.

My first save in alternate start is near 10mb with 217 mods now.

After play 3 months the same game, i'm level 105 now, i have near 30mb of savegame.

Sure a savegame of 60 to 100 mb have a big problem and you must delete it.

The size of the savegame is related to how many quest you have open and completed and have none relation to the player level. The game store info for each quest and, of course, at more player level you can have more quest completed and that is the main cause of the grow in size. But the savegame store much other things and maybe your not have thousand of quest and have thousand of scripts or thousand of generated npc's or creatures or ...

But sure the main origin is a bad mod.

I might have actually fixed everything...

After all the things mentioned in the precedent posts, and more general optimizing, and starting a new safefile, the game seems to be at a playable state!

Right now i'm on mobile (so sorry if i still can't upload my load order), and i still haven't checked how many mb the file is at now, nor i have left the Alternate Start location, but the game came back to save and load in a few seconds!

I don't want to jinx it becouse i still haven't really played on that save, but in the end (i hope it is) problem wasn't really anything specific, but more a combination of various things, such as me never really optimizing skyrim, mods with useless data and .esm, and broken scripts etc...

I'll post soon to confirm or not if everithnig is actually as it should be

Ok, i played for a while and everything is fine... No ctds, no infinite loads/saves and the save file weights only a few mb.

Moral of the story: skyrim is a misterious creature.

Always update mods, optimize everything and when in doubt start a new game.

Thanks to everyone for the support!

(Can i change the title of this thread, now that i know that bodyslide isn't the source of the problem?)

Yes you can change the title and you can add [solved] as well.
