Quick optimization question.

I've having a lot of "out of memory" crashes in Skyrim recently when in exterior regions. I have narrowed it down to something to do with loading NPCs during an open world cell change.

Are there any ini tweaks, mods, etc that would make booting up NPCs during a cell change better optimized? I don't mind if it adds lag or longer load times, that's still better than crashes.

I don't really have any specific optimization suggestions other than the typical ones (Crash Fixes, ENBoost ect), but possibly it could be worth checking if you have any mods that may be acting on these NPCs immediately as they spawn and if they can possibly be toned down or removed.

I used to experience papyrus stack dumps on fast travel to heavily populated cells like Solitude and Whiterun, and found it was mainly due to having too many mods trying to run their cell change operations on all the npcs at the same time.  Disabling a few of these mod's scanning features helped clean up most of the stack dumps.

Exterior is always several cells (very many) - it is an Encounter zone.
This means that NCP's in the Encounter Zone are recalculated (level, leveled outfits etc.)
Some places are very performance-harmful. As already mentioned.
Whiterun, Solitude and Rifton are among them.
Countless markers with countless scripts and path routines.

Advice:
Create non-compressed BSA's from Skyrim Vanilla.
Vanilla BSA's are compressed AND very slow and can be real problems even without mods in these places.

Otherwise, only following advice.
Not too many followers - there are reasons for the restriction of Bethesda.
No followers with Wardrobe Sytem - like Vilja.
Super follower, but completely stupid idea with change of clothes at the cell change.

Check mods that change exteriors and / or leveled outfits.
Even mods with curious cell scans are a possible reason - for Sexlab there are some of them, kidnapped etc.

Alright, I decompressed all the vanilla Skyrim BSA files (Guess my 8 TB harddrive can handle the extra room, lol). Aside from that I only use one follower that doesn't use any fancy scripts. No wardrobe systems or anything like that. I do use mods that replace the vanilla leveled outfits, but that is mostly bandits. One of my mods randomizes that basic NPC outfits, I suppose I could cut that content.

You should create the loose files as uncompressed BSA.
It does not matter how much space your hard drive is.

Skyrim (like almost every software) has problems with a lot of files - less problems with few big files. ;)

Decompress BSA not help in any way.... only if  your cpu are too slow (i3 or celeron)

i never make it and never clear my esm or esp with tes5edit... never need it

i have near 200 mods running in OLD machine (i5 4460 + gtx660 2g +1TB (no ssd) +16g now 8 before)

with iATF move near 12 moded followers with MME + wet function + devious + random sex + creatures (478 human animations + 289 creature animations) and PSQ + virgin for player...

near cero problems.. i can play for 2 or 3 hours..

sometimes get ctd c0000005 when load in first time start game...

If you have Crash Fixes 12 with osa alocators and ENBoost correctly configured never must get out of memory

Be sure you have SKSE Plugin Preloader for use "UseOSAllocators=1"

Revise your skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini or use BetINI if you not know make it manually.

Look your mod list, maybe have out-dated mods or collisions=incompatibilities.
