oldrayzor Posted December 21, 2017 Posted December 21, 2017 I've been trying to locate a free- mp4 editor online and they always turn out to be trial version that end abruptly. Would appreciate any suggestions?

sila Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 While it is not actually free, Vegas Pro 14 is 20 bucks right now on humble bundle, plus a lot of other software for editing music and the like. Pro is normally over 300 dollars for a full version, its a steal if you want to edit video. Edit for the link: https://www.humblebundle.com/software/vegas-pro-creative-freedom
flatliner10 Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Windows Movie Maker Avidemux (My recommendation) imovie (macOS) VSDC Free Video Editor If you just need a transcoder: https://www.xmedia-recode.de/ (FREEWARE) However, it is NOT as idiot-proof, one-clicky, dumped down as people come to expect since smartphones came up. It needs a bit of getting used to.

It needs a bit of getting used to. Movie Maker is no longer available for download. MS has discontinued. I have a new computer w/ new Win '10. Will certainly look at the others. This is just temporary. Used Premiere pretty extensively in the past, so can probably manage (fingers crossed). Might go w/ NCH for cheep media editors but for now these will be great. Thank you.
flatliner10 Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Oh yeah, sorry, WMM was discontinued at January, didn't know that. However Avidemux stays my recommendation, been around for ages, open source. http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ Tutorial: http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/doku.php?id=build%3Adoctop Another one i found is Shortcut. https://www.shotcut.org/download/ Availiable for win mac and linux. seems to be open-source as well. Cant tell anything about that however. And this one: https://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-video-editor.htm (might install adware, don't know) if non of these are powerful enough, then sorry, anything else seems to get expensive sooner or later. Please report back with your experiences.

I just found a version of Movie Maker to download. Don't know were I got that idea, though technically it has been discontinued. ShortCut was recommended a bit earlier by RussianPrince and I'm working with that right now. Not elegant, but definitely functional. I promise to look at avidemux. Thanks for the recommendatuion.
landess Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 I used Windows movie maker like crazy with winXP. Microsoft made it something else afterwards and I lost interest in their version. I've been using Avidemux for a while now as a video cropper (chop off part of front or/and back) and a format changer (avi to mp4 etc.). I'm using Ver2.6 which doesn't support RM files though (RealMedia). Not sure if newer versions do (if available). Been looking to get some kind of editor that can splice pieces together which brings my attention to this post. I'm not looking for any type of professional application, since the old movie maker was as much as I wanted. From the information provided above, looks like a good start. Thx
LazyBoot Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 OpenShot also looks like a decent option if you want free and open source. DaVinci Resolve also looks quite capable, even the free version.
Guest Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 im late but Devinci resolve is probably the most powerful free editor you can get but its hard to learn Hitfilm express is easy to use but can't do some of the things devinci resolve can do i would go for hitfilm if you are new to video editing
