Fallout 4 updated today, F4SE broke

Yes it F'ing broke f4se, its annoying that Beth can't actually do the job they are paid to with out breaking things.  oh to have a job where incompetence is rewarded with great pay and benefits.

Just to be clear, if Bethesda fixed every single bug and removed Creation Club (known as Useless Bullshit in my translation file) from existence, that release would also break f4se.  That's because f4se is tied to the version.  Even if they released a version with absolutely no changes but a spelling change, it would break f4se.  At least they did fix the issues that they broke with the Useless Bullshit release.  The real issue is IF they have to release a new version every time that they add new Useless Bullshit mods, then they should be bitch-slapped for doing such crapping coding.  They should be able to add these "mini-dlcs" (Useless Bullshit mods) without touching the released version.

Is there a reason for the version check in F4SE? By the time i started modding skyrim it had been out quite a while so beth didn't do any more updating but surely the same sort of thing must have happened with SKSE as well so i'd wonder why have the version check at all

"Is there a reason for the version check in F4SE?"

Yes

(or more helpfully every time the exe changes there is a distinct possibility that the addresses for functionality which the script extender is leeching off/patching into will have changed. Therefore to avoid the possibility of end user error by not using the correct version of the extender, (and other general support nightmares), it's a lot easier for the developers to just tie each release of the extender to specific .exe versions. Which is a good plan if the .exe doesn't change on a weekly basis)

Just found this on another forum, I'll paste this tips here (personnally I'm on the 1.9.4.0 patchlevel):

Steam allows you to use the steam console to access old versions of files for games you own. For the previous fallout4.exe you can use: download_depot 377160 377162 5059113238785214141

In this particular update, simply reverting back to the previous version for the fallout4.exe solved the problem for me. You have to make sure auto-update is off and only run from f4se.

It will download the depot to somewhere in your main steam folder, where steam is installed. The console gives you the path after it finishes downloading. Then you have to manually replace the fallout4.exe file in your FO4 folder. Make sure to back up the one you're replacing.

So a bit of advice from you guys please . I'm not really interested in the restore exe option when Fallout 4 updates because I think using an old exe with a new version of the game constantly could be a recipe for disaster . But if I run the game directly from f4se_loader it should run the game ok without it either updating the game or not running the game due to ' update required ' yeah ? I had this mod installed ( https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/24995 ) when this most recent patch hit and I thought it would circumvent the update ( said mod runs f4se if you have it installed and just runs the launcher normally if you dont have f4se installed ) but it auto updated my game still . So after this most recent patch I then uninstalled f4se and any mods requiring as I can envisage dozens of crappy CC updates on the horizon rendering the game constantly unplayable with f4se installed . So I miss f4se but I'm only going to reinstall it if I can both block the update from happening for certain upon launching the game AND being sure I can still play the game when Steam says ' Update required ' for it which usually stops you playing if you dont update . Also , if the f4se_loader option does work to prevent the update and lets you play the game , do you still have to have steam loaded in the background or do you have to have it unloaded in the background as surely the game doesnt work without steam being loaded up in some form ?

I've never used that mod you linked there, but this is how I run the game:

In steam, I've set Fallout 4 to only update when launched. For an extra safety measure I also set auto updates for all games to only happen between 4 and 5 am. This means it should never happen and I instead manually select the ones I want. When I want to play fo4 I open steam, wait to be logged in, then close the steam window. Then I open my mod manager (I'm using nmm for fo4) and use it to launch the game with the f4se loader. If you don't use a mod manager simply double-clicking the f4se loader exe, or a shortcut to it, should work fine as well.

Doing it this way I've never had an update apply unless I chose it to.

Thanks . I also have all my games to update only when launched and have times set similar to you . I dont use any mod managers but if directly using f4se_loader lets me play while holding off an update I'll be happy with that . Thanks again .

Until this week's CC update, that is.

1.10.26 only fixed the (game-breaking) bug with the load order. Still super-annoying because that bug was the only change to the game if you don't use the CC.

thats how Mine is set up and I had downloaded the .20 update the day before and updated all the mods available.  Did not get a chance to play that day and ended up logging on to steam the next day to get the final DLC for F04 so I could play for a few hours before my  hectic end of the week and weekend plans.  only to have it update again for four  hours no less.   So yeah I got ticked and yes it was a over reaction even if my plans were screwed over.

I have to give credit to the F4SE guys they had it updated pretty quickly.    So I will just do what I've always done, when I don't happen to forget, and rename the folders of the games I don't want Steam to screw with on the rare times I log onto the steam.

Supposedly, https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/611h5e/guide_how_to_download_older_versions_of_a_game_on/ tells you how to roll back to an old version on steam. Perhaps an F4SE fan could semi-automate some part of that?

(You probably do not want it to be completely automated, because that would create new problems. But detecting a version mismatch issue and giving people an option to try to roll back seems like maybe a good thing?)

That would be another approach, sure - and it would have advantages in some cases. Specifically: (*) Someone already built it and has it working, (*) Works even when there's network or server issus.

But the API documented on reddit would typically let people download and run something to fix work around the problem after it happened, and without dedicating disk space to holding executables they might never need. It would also remove some of the pressure to upload shady files for those situations.

It also looks simple enough that the hardest part of using it would be constructing the user interface - or, for a UI expert, I guess the hardest part would be wiring up the network support (though, for people willing to do the messy work of following the described procedure it apparently already exists and apparently is already usable).
