New Mod Users: Four Simple Steps for FNV Success (now with more steps!)

Recommended Posts

I've been seeing lots of requests for help lately that are obscenely simple to fix, so I thought I'd share something every mod user should know. (Yes, the title here was inspired by Special Agent Oso. My son was watching it as I wrote this and the tune got stuck in my head)

Step One: Get FOMM, NMM, Wrye Flash, ModFusion, or any other mod manager program you prefer. They seriously simplify the installation process. As long as the mod archive is structured properly, its a simple "click to install" process that gets everything where it needs to be. Check the documentation for your prefered manager to see what that file structure is.

Step Two: Get BOSS. It sorts known mods into their proper order, and moves unknown mods to the bottom of the list. This prevents some of the simplest to avoid installation issues.

Step Three: Get FNVEdit and its Training Manual. This program will check your load order to make sure things are where you need them to be for the game to run right, and tell you what is missing/in the wrong place to make it easy to fix. It will also make merged patches for conflicting mods to make sure that if you have multiple mods changing the same thing, the one you want is the one you see in-game.

Step Four: Read. READ. READ!!! Download pages contain loads of info about the mod, as do documents enclosed with the download. Installation instructions, troubleshooting tips beyond the steps above, known bugs, and a veritable treasure trove of other information that will save you (and the mod author) many headaches. They didn't type all that crap for shits n' giggles.

If you follow these four (relatively) simple steps, it will answer a majority of your questions unasked.

I would add to this, despite your hormones telling you to download & install every Sexout mod available, just get the basic SexoutNG, SCR and a couple of other plugins installed & working , play them for a bit, then add some more a couple at a time rather than installing everything at once then proclaiming "Sexout stopped my toilet from flushing!!!!" :)

Read the download posts fully too.

I was just throwing mod manager programs out at random. My point was to use a manager' date=' not to install things manually. I prefer FOMM myself, but its all according to taste.

Blasphemy! Why in the name of all that is holy and right would anyone want to do something so simple and organized?!

No Sir! Not this old fart! I do everything manually! Just don't trust those new fangled gizmo jobbers! Never know what the hell they are installing and where!

Yes, I am being slightly sarcastic....:P

You should add this as Step Four.

Preferably in very large letters.

I swear 95% of Technical Support posts are from people not downloading clearly listed requirements. Especially the Extender. I don't know what it is about it, but people love to not download it.

Will be addressed in the next release. I'm packaging whatever version is current with the FOMOD from now on. I've had enough. ;)

I'll have to try this out. Only step I was following was step 2. I can't get FOMM to install properly. I just keep getting error messages, even when trying to open with Run as Administrator and making sure it's not "read only". I've read NMM isn't the way to go either. NMM was not working for my Skyrim mods either, I had to learn to manually install, which is what I used for FNV.

Step 3 I had no idea about. I've seen it, but didn't know it was needed if you used BOSS. I couldn't agree with you more about taking it very slowly. I know that you should check every single mod you install before adding another. I just get anxious I guess with all the interesting mods out there. You get a few good ones going and then you just want to add a bunch. Then, you pay for not being patient.

I'm making one last go at Sexout. If it doesn't work I'll probably give up for a bit and stick to a couple others that have worked for me. It's just sad because Sexout has soooo much to offer. Hopefully I'll get it right.

Wyre Bash is a good substitute for FOMM? I hope so. FOMM is out of order for me X.X

If you've had NMM installed it does something that keeps FOMM from working. What you need to do is remove EVERYTHING added by NMM, install FOMM, then reinstall NMM and exclude anything fallout from the install. I think. Prideslayer or Loogie would probably be able to answer that better. And if you can figure out how it works yes, Wrye will work instead.

What you can't do is use NMM to manage the same games as FOMM(*). You can use both programs at the same time without issues.

(*)Technically all you can't do is have them share the *MM data directory for a particular game. By default both use the same top level games directory, by default, c:\games. If NMM gets ahold of the InstallLog.xml file that FOMM uses (default: c:\games\falloutnv\install info\), it will break it and screw up FOMM for that game.

Is "Load Order Sorting Tool" any good? I'm using BOSS and FNV Edit atm, I don't know how to manually change mod order for FO:NV. This tool seems good but I haven't seen it mentioned here in LL. So, not sure it's that good if it's not raved about here.

Another question. Using FNV Edit, the load order of mods is perfect when I use it and it lists them. When I go into Data Files when launching FO:NV, the order isn't right. Example: Sexout-Legion.esm is listed before Sexout-Slavery.esm when I want the opposite (right? lol). I'm just worried because I've got a list of the Sexout mods I want to use, but I'm scared my mod order is messing everything up. X.@ Does it matter how it's listed in Data Files on game or is what's listed in FNV Edit right?

The problem with FOMM and NMM is that they both use the same folder names for functionality IF you use the default installation directory names. Simply install them using non-default directories for Install Info and Mods directories. I used "FOMM - Install Info", "FOMM - Mods", "NMM - Install Info" and "NMM - Mods"... but then I junked NMM shortly afterwards because it was too buggy (though it is improving). You can also go into your user directory, local settings, application data, FOMM or NMM directories and drill down in the directory you find there til you find the user.config file and change the XML data in that file to rename the directories. As an example you'll see an XML section like so:

e:\FONV\FOMM - Mods

You'll see XML settings for FONV and FO3 for both the Mods and Install Info directories. Rename the settings in the user.config AND rename the actual directory names themselves. The alternative to editing the user.config for both apps is to completely uninstall and reinstall them using the above suggestion of alternative directory names.

BTW, most .NET applications expose a user.config file somewhere in %USERLOCALAPPDATA%\AppName\AppSpecificData\VersionNumber\user.config.

That's the technical problem.. the mental one that lead to the technical one is when the FOMM guys rebranded FOMM as NMM they didn't change the damn directory (NMM is writing to the wrong one, plainly) and also don't care that this is causing people problems -- as they just want everyone to switch to NMM. Jerks. ;)

This is why priority #3 (after fixing sexout bugs and adding some stuff to extender) is forking and releasing FOMM. The code is terrible, to be honest, it's no wonder it's buggy as hell and they can't find the bugs. Every time I start work on it I give up and start writing my own.. get tired of that and go back to FOMM.. it's a vicious cycle.

I think I'll stick with the "fix FOMM" path for now though. Round 1 will be a bunch of refactoring I think before any bug fixes though. Just looking at the 'organization' in the code makes me want to cry.

Yeah, I left out commenting about how much asshattery was involved in not making them compatible by default...
