Guest Suited Prawns Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Building your pc yourself in never wasted time, it familiarizes you with what's inside, and makes trouble shooting alot easier. Plus you waste money on the extra fees any company has to charge to pay for man-hours.
Leito86 Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 http://www.tigerdirect.com/ That place is defunct unfortunately. It's newegg from now on. To the OP: you could just do a google search. There's tons of options. I don't recommend alienware though. I've used several of their desktops and laptops at work and they all have issues.
myuhinny Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I have never had a problem with tigerdirect I have bought some things from there it's also where I bought my acer aspire predator gaming tower that I am using and when the time comes I'll get their newer predator gaming tower from there.
bjornk Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 @OP: MSI has some prebuilt desktop PC's called Nightblade or something. They seem decent. They do have some configs which include a GTX980, but their CPU's are mostly Skylake. You might want to check MSI's website for retailers in your region.
gregathit Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 To the OP: you could just do a google search. There's tons of options. I don't recommend alienware though. I've used several of their desktops and laptops at work and they all have issues. I'm rocking a r1 Aurora (2009) with windows 8.1. No issues at all. I will agree that they are pricey as all hell, but who else makes a computer that with a few component upgrades (video card and SSD) is still damn near top of the line after 7 years? There isn't a game out there I can't run at max settings. If you have money to burn, it isn't a bad move to get one. But if you are looking for the most bang for your buck, then TigerDirect or Newegg are good choices. I've bought a computer from each of them. Newegg is the better choice IMHO as TigerD tends to use lesser grade components. But then you are typically paying less.......so the old proverb applies...you get what you pay for. Better by far to build your own to get the best you can for cheap. One thing you might consider is buying a bare bones kit. That gets you the case and usually the power supply, CPU, CPU fan, motherboard and memory (sometimes a few other components). The do all the assembly and burn in tests to make sure everything works. Then you slap in the easy stuff (hard drives, video card, sound card (if you don't want to use the on board one), CD/DVD ROM and so on). You can get what you want, at the best possible price that way. Just a thought.
Guest endgameaddiction Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Alienware is nothing but an overpriced box with circuit boards and rubber cables. I remember when many people were infatuated with Alienware and praised themselves over others for owning one. But that's how all top brands are. I'm using my Gateway FX series from back in 2009 I bought the damn thing for 1,5k and it was packed with a GTX 260, 759w PSU, CPU 2.68GHz I5 Core (quadcore). But back then I wasn't all into pc hardware. I always wanted to build one but I always felt intimidated because I wasn't sure what I would get myself into. Or most of all, if I ever would of finished building it. Won't make that mistake again. I will build my next rig. And even after that. Brand name PCs like Gateway, Alienware, Dell etc... it's charging you more for purchasing the brand than the actual hardware.
bjornk Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 @OP: You pretty much want something like this.. ABS Vortex Stryker ALI050 Gaming Desktop Intel Core i7 4790K (4.0 GHz) 8 GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4 GB (MSI) 2 TB HDD 240 GB SSD Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit $1,250 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883102124

Good luck. They got bought out and relaunched as a business oriented operation. Alienware is nothing but an overpriced box with circuit boards and rubber cables. Alienware was actually a good brand til they got bought out by Dell in 2006. If you're looking for a good quality pre-built gaming rig, you want a Falcon Northwest machine. They do custom built boxes as well as laptops, and are well worth the money, from what I'm told.
myuhinny Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Tigerdirect still has gaming towers but if they stop carrying them then will just go elsewhere as they are not the only dealer around.
bjornk Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 I still recommend checking out MSI's prebuilt Nightblade machines (not the barebone ones). They are pretty much like a gaming laptop (with pre-installed OS & software) except with desktop components and they are rather compact as well. Here's an unboxing and interior view of MSI Nightblade X2 002EU (with an MSI GTX980), never mind the Swede... You may also want to check out Origin PCs. They are kinda like the pre-Dell Alienware. https://www.originpc.com/gaming/desktops/ Building your pc yourself in never wasted timeBut it is, if you're a 40+ old and been doing that since the mid 90's.
Kaz Aanh Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Building your pc yourself in never wasted time, it familiarizes you with what's inside, and makes trouble shooting alot easier. Plus you waste money on the extra fees any company has to charge to pay for man-hours. Its true but once I builded my pc I had enough. Took me around 2 weeks to scout around the web to look for the pc parts and learn/read about them. Opinions/revievs/compabillities etc. But now I give my pc to the local computer store to do cleaning, usually every 2-3 months. In-between I do a light dust-cleaning off the fans/inside-antidust-mattress etc etc NEVER AGAIN by myself If you have no idea how computers works and you have no pc expert friend nearby don't do it.
zzz72w3r Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 In addition to originpc.com, https://www.endpcnoise.com/ is also well regarded. Bear in mind that most custom shops made their name when performance PC were noisy and hot and the component industry was very, very fragmented. That's not the case anymore as the industry has consolidated. Chipset is now fixed, GPU just two suppliers, so are HDD and memory effectively, and MB is really down to just three. In addition to fewer choices out-of-box parts are also cooler and quieter than ever. None of these custom shops really are worth the premium for their expertise anymore unless you are into the cosmetic stuff. I have built dozens of machines for myself, friends and family members over the years but over the last few years I just paid local shops to order/assemble my upgrades because time is more valuable to me nowadays. With Amazon/Newegg, it is very transparent what these shops charged for their services.

They do custom built boxes as well as laptops, and are well worth the money, from what I'm told. Kudos to you on this post, yes I bought a Falcon Northwest Mach V back in December of last year. It was extremely well made, right out of the box & constant 60 fps with any game I threw at it on max settings. It wasn't the cheapest build, so for somebody who may spend less won't necessarily get the same results. But yes they make great pcs. I skipped on the custom paintjob because I was already a few k in. They are an American company & their customer support is actually something to be admired. Having bought my girlfriend an Alienware 17 inch laptop, the customer support for them was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in such affairs. But then talking with Falcon Northwest the difference was night & day. They don't have 4790 cpus though, or maybe they do, at least they don't on the x99 platform like the Mach V is that I got. I picked up the 5930k with mine & it works beautifully oc'd to 4.6 ghz.
Antrox Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Why not just build one? Premades are often poorly built and trash.
Zor2k13 Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Premade things are junk and when the motherboard goes bad in a year and you can't find a replacement you will have to build another computer from what is left of that one anyway.
gregathit Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Premade things are junk and when the motherboard goes bad in a year and you can't find a replacement you will have to build another computer from what is left of that one anyway. Oh please stop the nonsense.. Maybe that is true on some cheapass walmart special, but none of the good gaming machine companies have this issue. For fucks sake, my alienware gaming machine I picked up on Jan 1st of 09. I have a buddy who has a NW Falcon gaming machine that is over 6 years old, same thing still rocking, and the list goes on and on. Let's clarify what you are saying instead of blasting out general comments that are so far from the truth that they are useless. I'm buying a pre-made this month, why? Because, as it was stated earlier, I can afford the money more than the time. Fuck if I want to change my own oil on my truck, nor do I want to waste my time assembling a computer with all the liquid cooling I am going for this round. Could I, sure, I built my own rigs for 2 decades, now, why bother.
Zor2k13 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 You are being specific about high end brands I was assuming the op was talking about those crappy things like gigabyte brick or some cheapy asrock or shuttle barebones thing for $150 which is totally different that what you are talking about. Yeah falcon and others like them make some great stuff and it all clocks in at $999.99 or greater that is different. When I hear premade I think of shuttle and their little crap computers from the early to mid 2000s which had awful power supplies and really cheap motherboards.
gregathit Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Ok, I can agree with that completely. No problem. Thanks for the clarification.
