What is up with these spammers lately??

Nothing is "up" with them, site's always gotten tons of spam bots. The vast majority of them that manage to get past the anti-spam measures when registering an account however are blocked from being able to post their spam since new members aren't allowed to include links in their posts, making them fail to actually post the spam.

The current bot spam doesn't actually include any actual links since it obfuscates the spam link with different characters, making the no links rule for new members not trigger. Which also really makes the spam a pointless waste of time for whoever is running the bot, since they get no clickable link to bait people into clicking.

Eventually the bot will give up and move on. For now though I've disabled new members ability to create topics, which should stop it's current methods. I'll re-enable new member's ability to create topics sometime later once the bot has moved on.

IP blocks would be useful.

They don't use the same IP for each account, they all use different proxies, making an IP block more or less pointless. I could IP ban all Korean IP's, since that they've all use, but that would be a little extreme and would most likely just make the bot owner switch to non-Korean proxies.

Yeah. Also does it help if I report the posts or it would not make a difference in terms of time getting them deleted?

It helps in that I get an email whenever something gets reported which should bring my attention back to the site immediately. It doesn't help in that I rarely check my phone right away whenever it alerts me to a new email.

Regardless, it's usually pretty obvious there's spam since the Recent Topics section on the index is always full of it, which I've been checking in on every 30-40 minutes since the spam started.

If the spam messages aren't visible in the recent topics though, reports certainly do help. Just don't worry about reporting each and every spam topic or anything like that, just report one of the topics or the spammers user profile.

Yes, it does help. I always report them when I see them. And if I'm not mistaken. I believe they get a notice when they aren't on LL. This helps them view the report on what it's about. Though, it's best to be specific. The last few times the bot has returned I've reported with "the turd has returned" heh not really helpful.

Spam is obvious when you see it, so the report description isn't all that important. You could write simply "spam" or even "dfasknenl342989d@fnj" in the report description. It's obvious it's spam soon as we read the reported threads subject line or content that it's spam and needs to deleted and the user banned.

I ninja'd your comment. I didn't see you reply to him in time. I guess I typed it while you already posted it.

How about auto delete all new posts containing Korean letters? Since English is the language almost everyone here know and use. I also suggest making a site-wide notice to tell Korean users to use English in this short while, before the spam bot is dealt with.

Seems the spam is dealt with now. Forget what I say.

Could you stick  "CAPTCHA" functionality on all people posting with less than a certain number of posts? That might reduce the spam a bit, (depending on how good the CAPTCHA mechanism was).

"Click here if you are not a robot" seems to actually work pretty well too. Not foolproof, but then nothing is... but it might help a little. I've no idea on how much though.

To make it easier on existing users, it could even be disabled for someone with, I dunno, five posts or more?

I hate crapcha's many are always hard to read or understand I have seen ones that use pictures that work pretty well like 10 pictures select all that have trees in them or mountains and so on.

Since there's already gradual limits that get removed with higher posts, (ie username change), I guess it won't be that much of an effort to implement.

Yawn, trying to get my 2 posts

A relatively pointless post on a thread talking about spammers?

Well done!

I would have to agree. The original post was about a particular bout of automated spamming. To enter a post which says its boring to go through a certain 'human' qualifying interaction process sort of points to that poster being somewhat suspicious in regards to their intentions.
