Poor playability after Main Quest?

It is true that by Bethesda standards you end up being more focused as usual. It is also true that "focused story" and "open world" are not easy to combine from a writer's perspective. I do appreciate that they wanted to give us a compelling main quest though and finding your son is fairly strong as far as character motivation goes. Let's face it, the story would almost work exactly the same had both husband and son died in the nuclear attack and the rest of Vault 111 would still have somehow died due to a malfunction or whatever. My character would still have found the Brotherhood and the Institute and the Minutemen and ended up siding with one of them. But in terms of motivation, this wouldn't have been nearly as strong as making her find her son. I must admit that the twist when she found out who her son really is was pretty neat. The one thing I hated about the writing is that I -have- to antagonize at least one of the factions. My character wouldn't have done that. There is really obvious way out other than the ones provided by Bethesda's writers and I'd have loved to have the game end this way: My characters becomes the Director and immediately scraps the Gen 3 Synth program (which is in her power as the Director). Ta-da. Problem solved. Everyone is happy. I never understood why the Institute's serving robots have to look and think like humans anyway when Mr Handy can do the same jobs they let the Synths do.

Honestly, I don't know what they were thinking at Bethesda. I mean was one of the designers a brand new dad or something, and determined to share that feeling with the world?  They're normally so good about things like this.

Since I didn't follow the hype, I was pretty sure I'm creating mum and dad to play the child when I first fired the game up. Would have made for a better story, I think. Mum, dad or both being killed and you looking for the killers, would have made for a better and more playable story.

The thing is, I can get "focused story" anywhere. I'd far sooner they'd priotised the "open" over the "focus"

I do appreciate that they wanted to give us a compelling main quest though and finding your son is fairly strong as far as character motivation goes.

How much motivation does anyone need, though? I mean there's a big, interesting world out there. I want my character to have an excuse to go out and explore, not an obsessive need to follow the main plot.

This sort of thing works well enough in games like Dishonored, but then Dishonored doesn't have the wealth of side-plots and distractions that you find in TES or Fallout. It just seems to be that Beth are crippling themselves in area where they, uniquely, are very, very good in order to produce a mediocre attempt at something very, very commonplace.

I would love to know what they were thinking.

I know what you mean. Synthetic humans don't really fit the general tenor of Fallout tech, really. As a one-off tribute to Blade Runner in F3 it was fine. The trouble is it left the Institute as by far the most interesting loose end in the Fallout universe.

Yeah, I was disappointed to find out that I wasn't playing Junior.

I do not understand people who are still playing the games from Bethesda for quests. They must have to make a clean sandbox, without any hint of stupid quests. I try avoid all quest, just walk around and explore the world. And with the advent of the possibility of buildings, I spent many hours on it. Even hard to imagine what opportunities there will be when a CK to come out.

p.s. funny things... all negative fallout 4 reviews on steam, writen by people, who has over 1k hours on mindless games like a Counter Strike, Garry's Mod, DOTA and etc. but in their reviews, they write about the absence of rpg elements in f4.

Well, even if the main quest isn't so great (like the discovery of the boggymens though), some sidequests like ... ahem ... USS Constitution are worth the whole play of this game :P

Funny think same was with vanila skyrim, until dlc and shit load of mods happen. Fallout 4 is not  good but I belive it will be awesome latter

Fallout 4 is a sandbox with a LOT of improvement to come, by mods or DLC. Don't know if i'm alone on this, but, when exploring (il like the whole workshop part), i take note of some houses i would reopen ...

And need more vaults and linked quests too.

Awesome world but atm kinda empty, and builing is awesome but it need better UI :( I hope too more quest and I want build vault :) or even more item for builing like pre war

Im not alone gilbert%20gosseyn.gif I'll suggest this to Novacoru see if, with the G.E.C.K, she can do some miracle ;). And, as for pre-war items, Homemaker add a lot of them actually. I hope more to come, but we'll see ...

But I read this kind of mods doing big trouble in game atm? I was playing with minimal list of mods. I only read bad thing about it, like first skyrim mods. Visial are good but esp no

Homemaker isn't like SSEx (this one corrups your savegames) and works pretty well. My advice is to take Homemaker alongside with Settlement Keywords and Alternate Settlements. It's very stable on my computer.

I actuallyhing the best part is after the main quest :-/.

My characters become free to do what the fuck they want, maybe its because Im a roleplayer and even without quests I always have something to do 9Ive fin ished all qusts with my first character and still play with him, gout now I make my own story with console commands, mods andn overpowered mayhem.

I think the game is underated, it was dumbed down, but the fact that fallout 3 and NV were better dont make fallout 4 a bad game.

Lots of people complained about the minigun, but its the second most powerfull gun in the game (gattling laser is the first), both are affected by heavy weapons and commando and they stack. I cantt see how a 60 damage per bullet minigun is weak, the gattling laser is even more overpowered.

Well, yeah... but if you want to go that way, you can roleplay by sitting still in an empty room, closing your eyes, and imagining whatever you want.

I want the game to support my roleplaying efforts. I find there isn't much to sink my teeth into once the main quest is over.

Of course, there's not a whole hell of a lot beforehand, either.

Morrowind was the last time Bethesda really were cooking on gas. That's not even nostalgia talking, you had room to breath in that game and it not only stood up to hardcore rpger scrutiny, it established a blueprint that we've all been desperate to see repeated ever since.

I feel like Bethesda have been shutting doors in our faces, reducing the footprint of a once splendidly shabby and haunted mansion to the size of a modest bungalow with all mod cons. And that seems most markedly apparent when comparing F3 to F4. It's entirely possible that this is the first Bethesda game in over a decade that I won't bother with, and that makes me feel like I should go into mourning or something.

I've never played a game that has a worthwhile post-game. That is par for the course. That is why I prefer games to have New Game Plus or alternate campaigns and why I feel that letting players continue on part the conclusion of Broken Steel in Fallout 3 was a mistake and that Fallout: New Vegas was better for having no post-game play at all.

Once the main quest is over, the only thing left to do is look for any sights

you might have missed, and play with your settlements. The game becomes

a box of Legos you take out of the closet when you feel bored.

I still fire up TTW several times a week just to hang out with my gal and bum

around; I have over a thousand hours as the same character. If that's not

roleplaying I don't know what is.

I play Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series since 2002 I when I was still a little girl... w/o ever having finished a single one. At first I've thought it's 'cause I have lost interest somehow, but how can one have lost any interest in Morrowind in autumn 2002 somewhere in the Northern Ashlands and still play the game until the release of Oblivion four years later? Gosh, I have even circumnavigated Vvardenfell in a touch of Magellanic joy of discovery as Rhedd-headed captain of the Santa Banana, mostly naked for the first nude mods suited me so well, made me feel more grown up. Later I gave Saint Martin the boots of oblivion in the Weynon Priory 'cause I really don't go for a frakkin holy man, nah. It was much better to stay as a home-grown dark witch in the prefab dark woods on sight of Cyrodiil, doing kinky magic with lone wanderers and tricky crafting stuff for the next few years. Poor boy is waiting for me on horseback in the 10th year already. A similar fiasco happened in FA 3 when I gave daddy the finger (daddy's little girl can do that) shortly after I killed SRB's Zimmer in cold blood, just to start my own career... as the leader of an irrelevant raider squad in DC which actually meant nothing but dirty sex, cheap drugs and rock 'n' roll 24/7 in Bethesda or Fairfax Ruins (to mention just two hot festival locations) for years, as if I'd not get enuff party in RL. In the meantime I'm a young mother with a dead hubby (sounds familiar, huh), almost dead for kicked out, hopefully deep-frozen, the bastard. And I really doubt that I'd ever end the main quest of FA 4, I simply hate streamlined stuff that leads you back beyond the beginning, the worse place to live, to say the least.

I also didnt like bethesda MQ too much (except V quesline that was a masterpiece)... thats why I love alternate start mods, I am a roleplayer and hate having to save the world, why cant I just be neutral?

why do I have to give a fuck about the purifier or dad? he abandoned me! why cant i join the enclave? or just say: "fuck it, im not joining the brotherhood, Ill fuck the enclave my own way", then just take enclave people as hostages, torture them for their HQ location, get a shitload of mininukes and a angry mob and rain radioactove death over them shouting: PAYBACK BITCHES!!!!

why cant I just "join" the mystic dawn and whe everione is distracted Fill the place with  the fucking paralyze/magical damage per second max area splell I created at the academy?

why cant I just talk to miraac an convince him that I dont give  fuck aboput his world domination or being dragonborn and free him so he can kill alduin while I live my fucking life?

FUCK IT! Ill make a mod that gives new options for the MQ and several other quests on FO4. Fuck the brotherhood, fuck the railroad, fuck the institute and  a mainly fuck you garvey and the minuemen I wont save any helpless settlers or figt a war! Shaun is alive so I do what the fuck i want now!!!
