Rooker Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I'm having trouble saving, but only sometimes. It normally takes <1 second to save, but every now and then it starts taking >10 seconds. It doesn't seem to matter how I make the save (hard save, quicksave, manually-typed console save). The save files don't seem to be bloated, they're only around 8MB at the moment. I've had long games where it got about twice that size without problems. The skse co-save is about 130KB. The part that really has me scratching my head is that it only happens sometimes. It was happening earlier, so I quit to do some googling, then went back and started playing again and the problem wasn't happening on the same character in the same area doing basically the same things. I don't know what to make of that. An hour from now, it'll probably be doing it again. I never see anything that looks important in the papyrus logs, just a bunch of spam from Live Another Life and Convenient Horses checking for mods I don't use. A lot of "VM is freezing, VM is frozen, VM is unfreezing" near the end. I'm not getting any real problems playing the game, except for a bit of stuttering now and then. Anatriax Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Sounds like scripts hanging up. What are your skyrim.ini settings?
Rooker Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 I do get some script latency issues occasionally, especially from Convenient Horses. Rayblue Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 The current version of XPMSE (3.0) can cause save times to be a little longer in that larger amount of data is saved to an .skse file in addition to the .ess savegame.

That's just you going into the menu and quitting. Would opening the console with the ~ also do it? I don't think I ever quit the game any way except by opening the console and typing QQQ. I do go in the MCM menu a lot too to mess around with mod settings, so I guess that could explain the entries further up the logs. The current version of XPMSE (3.0) can cause save times to be a little longer in that larger amount of data is saved to an .skse file in addition to the .ess savegame. I did just update that to the latest. But like I said, usually it's fine. Whatever is causing this, it comes and goes and I don't know what triggers it.
Rooker Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 I just noticed these two enormous papyrus logs from a long session this morning. Absolutely full of errors I don't normally see. I don't remember it running particularly badly at the time and I wasn't having my save issue at the time. I think most of it was a dungeon crawl through Forelhost and fighting a dragon or two. Yes, I think it just happens every time the action freezes, whether it's opening the console or the menu.
Rooker Posted August 15, 2015 Author Posted August 15, 2015 I'm still getting the problem off and on, but the ini tweaks helped, I think. When it does it, it's taking around 3-4 seconds instead of >10. Still annoying but not nearly as bad. I'm noticing something of a trend with others having the same problem and also having the newest XPMSE. I also noticed it was spamming the pure hell out of my papyrus logs with errors before I disabled logging.
gregathit Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 How many saved games do you have? When I was playing it I noticed that when I got over 100 saved games it started inching up the time required to complete a game save. Try creating another folder and move all over but the last 4-5 saved games and see if that helps.
Dubhorizon Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 As far as I know, the mod that recently could cause a save game bloat was XPMSE versions 3.0 to 3.05. Download the latest XPMSE, delete the latest SKSE-co save and load that savegame. Save and you should be good.

Try creating another folder and move all over but the last 4-5 saved games and see if that helps. A couple hundred when this started, but I went through and deleted all but the most recent save when the problem started and it didn't help anything. As far as I know, the mod that recently could cause a save game bloat was XPMSE versions 3.0 to 3.05. Download the latest XPMSE, delete the latest SKSE-co save and load that savegame. Save and you should be good. I just checked and I have 3.12, which is actually 0.01 versions behind so I'll update it again. Is deleting a co-save safe? That wouldn't break my current game if I did that?
Dubhorizon Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Well, it will cause a lot of mods to default such as SoS, etc. But you can always re-set the changes in the mcm menus. You can try it and if its not good enough, you can always use a previous save. Always make back-ups.
Rooker Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 Okay, now I'm completely baffled. I ended that game and started a new character to play around with some new mods. A brand new character, with about 20 fewer mods than the last game and the problem started within an hour or so. The save files are definitely getting bloated now. Look what happened to the save file sizes over the space of a few hours. And it was back to taking >10 seconds to save, so I guess the ini tweaks didn't help after all. That character is only about level 4 or 5 at this point and I've barely done anything but wander between Windhelm and Whiterun a few times. Noticed something strange too. If I make a hard save and then delete the latest quicksave, I can quicksave normally for a while. But custom and hard saves still freeze up. I'm starting to wonder if I'm being trolled here. /edit I've just restarted this game and made a quicksave. It saved almost instantly and is now only 6,452KB and the co-save is 191KB. I've done nothing but run for less than 5 minutes and kill a wolf since the previous save. What in the world? /edit2 I've started making some saves when it's behaving normally and when it's misbehaving to get a sense of what size the files are when it's happening vs not happening. The size of the co-saves here are pretty interesting. Look how it's suddenly plummeted in size there. The regular save files haven't really changed in size (about 7 - 8mb).
b3lisario Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Load the skse file in a text editor like notepad++ Figure out where its data is coming from.
Rooker Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 Load the skse file in a text editor like notepad++ Figure out where its data is coming from. It looks like it's about 90% from that xpmse plugin. It was around the time I updated to version 3.xx, which uses a plugin + MCM menu, that this became such a problem. I'm going to disable that plugin and clean the save and see if that does any good. I never change a single thing in the menu anyway and don't really understand what it's for. Hopefully it won't break the save but Skyrim is broken for me anyway if it's going to keep doing this crap. The current character is only about a day old anyway.
Rooker Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 XPMSE was definitely the problem. Disabled the plugin and deleted the skse co-save. It's several hundred saves later and every single one took less than one second, just like they're supposed to. When I disabled the plugin, saves were 10MB and co-save was jumping from 100KB to 600KB. Hours later, the save file is only 8MB and the co-save is only 14KB.
srayesmanll Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Had a discussion with Groovtama yesterday about the growth. What I was seeing was that the co-save would continually grow during a game session. For me though, if I saved, quit to desktop, relaunched game, reloaded that save, then immediately saved and quit again, then co-save dropped back down to a more normal size. Mine grew from 360kb to 1300kb, then after the quit/relaunch back down to 360kb. Groov explained that it has to do with the cleanup code and a function used to determine if cleanup is needed (which is of course reset on restart so it removes the extraneous info on restart). Take a look at the xpmse thread here to see that discussion. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that Groov will be changing this anytime soon (mentioned something about after FNIS 6.0 released - MAYBE). I'm like you, I don't do anything funky with weapon placements, and I use the standard weapon draw animations, so disabling the XPMSE.esp might be an idea to try for me as well.

I asked Groov in the XPMSE thread about what was handled by the esp, and I'll just quote what he mentioned: srayesmanll, on 19 Aug 2015 - 08:55 AM, said: Groovtama: Quick question - what specifically does the XPMSE.esp do? I assume this is what handles the MCM, plus the weapon node placements and selection of the draw animations, correct? If someone is using the default weapon nodes and default animations, is there any reason to have the XPMSE.esp active? Just curious. The stuff mentioned and extra racemenu sliders, weapon scale corrections bethesda messed up (bows, arrows, etc.), weapon scales from racemenu sliders to the drawn weapon. So it handles more that just the weapon node adjustments and animations replacements. I thought that the sliders where actually a separate esp (used to XPMSERaceMenu or something like that), but I just haven't looked at the new version's esp files. So while not a clear answer as to whether the skele will still work without the esp (frankly, I don't see why it wouldn't), disabling will definitely affect more that just the weapon node stuff.

Just tried a killall in the middle of Riften and nothing exploded. Only one CTD since disabling it yesterday and I'm sure that was just a random, unrelated glitch (I do tend to crash occasionally, weak PC and all). /edit If you do disable it, you will have to delete the co-save. I noticed it still had all that data even after I disabled the plugin. Surprisingly, none of my other mods seemed to notice it being deleted. There were also 4 scripts that I deleted from the regular save with SaveCleaner. Their names all began with xpmse or something. /edit2 I also noticed, like the other guy, that if I quit the game for a while and started playing again later, the problem wouldn't start immediately, but only after a longish session. I was starting to wonder if the problem was my PC overheating, but obviously that's not it.

Telliax Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Apparently, there is an issue with how SKSE saves are overwritten. For me overwriteing a quicksave is freezing the game for at least 30 seconds. Disabling XPMSE plugin reduced this time to like 5s, due to greatly reduced SKSE save file size. Some of the race menu sliders are gone (SoS for example), but now I can at least use quick save once in a while (still had to disable autosaves though). Thank you for the suggestion. Another thing which I found to be helpful is "Save Hot Key ArchMod" (look it up on Nexus). It basically allows you to set a hot key for regular save. It creates a new save file each time, so there is no overwriting involved. Needless to say, those saves are instant even with XPMSE enabled.
