Mister X Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 ... because recently I bought a whole new PC, to get rid of my old Notebook. So, probably any part was better: Tower instead of Notebook, so I can upgrade easier in the future An up-to-date mainboard with the latest ports A new processor with basically double the GHz of my old one A Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 instead of a GeForce GTX 560M 24" Full HD display instead of 15.4" 1366x768 notebook display And so on. Built the parts together and was euphoric because anything worked fine on the very first try (YAY!). But then. Then, I couldn't find the CD with the Windows OS anymore So, at the moment, I have a box of scrap worth more than 1.000€ standing around I've literally searched any likely, unlikely and impossible place where the CD could be: nothing.
Uncle64 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I think you can DL one new CD from Microsoft for free if you have one serial key. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery Or cant you ask one friend if they have one disk you can copy? You will need your own serial key for Windows.
RitualClarity Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Keep in mind if you are new to building the cd from the old notebook will not work for you. You need a new full install CD with Key if you didn't buy one with your parts.. you need to do this. After installing windows you will need to follow up with other cd like driver cd from your motherboard, and other hardware if possible instead downloading fresh drivers from the manufacture web site. Once you have installed the basic windows set up and it seems to work (avoid other software besides windows and driver setup) you need to create a image from your system. Acronis, Norton etc are examples of programs to do this. This way. you won't have a problem with loosing the cd key or setting up the system again in the future and then downloading tons of updates (which you have already downloaded for this setup) and only would need the updated that happened after the original setup. Then and only then start working on installing the basic setup of programs etc. no personal data except where necessary. Once you have a nice setup ready to go create a second image (full) so that you can return to this. Sometime afterthis I add my added software of annual software etc and all my personal data.
Uncle64 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Adding to ritualclarity:s post. If you have one manufacture CD that comes whit you mainboard you will often find one backup program free on that disk. And as he says, use the drivers from that disk from start, you can update them later.
Mister X Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 I have a clean Win 7 on my actual system, I've bought it years ago to upgrade from Vista The problem just is, that I've put the product key within the CD case, to always have it nearby my disc :/ Now I know how bad this idea was. The next thing is: The official site of Microsoft linked above doesn't accept the Product Key of my running system, even though it's the one that was shipped with the disc o.O Always cries something of "Error 517-..." which seems to tell that I have a Key that Microsoft doesn't like. Don't ask me, why. If I understand the comments in the support forum right, that site of MS seems to act quite randomly in accepting and denying product keys. Now I try to download a .iso from winfuture.de, though it doesn't have SP1 shipped with it. So, is it worth a try, with a disc made out of that iso and the key of my actual system?
Lexi SubZero Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Just torrent the OS and install it from a pen. It's not 'THAT' simple if you want Windows Update to work as well..
bjornk Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 The download page above is probably for retail versions of Windows and therefore only accepts retail keys. In other words, if the key you entered there is the one for the Windows that came with your laptop, MS won't accept it and won't allow you to download the ISO. Until recently, you could download legit Windows 7 ISOs from Digital River, but sadly, they are no longer available. I think Microsoft's been consciously trying to erase every trace of Windows 7 on the planet. I doubt it'll work in your case but you might want to give this a try, if you can find an ISO. http://www.howtogeek.com/75496/how-to-reinstall-windows-without-having-to-reactivate/ If you're a student, you can buy Windows 8.1 Pro for about 60 Euros directly from Microsoft, pretty decent deal if you ask me. You can then install Classic Shell and you're good to go. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msde/de_DE/list/Software-fur-Studenten-/categoryID.67800200 They'll give you a key and with that key you can download the ISO and do a clean install. If you can pay a little more, you can even order DVD media for Win 8.1 Pro (they'll send you two DVDs, one for the 32-bit version and another for the 64-bit).
SquallPT Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Just torrent the OS and install it from a pen. It's not 'THAT' simple if you want Windows Update to work as well.. Mine works and it is not " legal " . It has a tool that keeps it 30 days free forever and ever and ever
RitualClarity Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Using "tools' and other methods to allow you to "use' windows product might be all find and dandy just don't use it for serious computer use. These "tools" are unknown and can be exploited and used to take over computers and / or access your data. So if it is on just a gaming system with no real use like banking or work etc the worst case is some friends might get bad emails sent to them from you. Even with the best antivirus software nothing is completely safe.
Afrotoast43 Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 If you could run skyrim on linux, i would say install Ubuntu 14, but instead, i'm going to tell you instead of crying, make TWO partitions on your hard drive: one for ubuntu and one for windows. That way even if your windows flatlines, you can still use your pc.
Mister X Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 Well, the big problem is to get an iso. I'll ask some friends if they have a CD at home that they could lend me and I also will call the MS support (thx Mogie) to give it a try (I hate MS support :/). I don't need any method to backup my Registration of Windows, I know how to get my License Key without 3rd party programs out of the Registry. And yeah, I neither will use a torrent or sth like that to get an iso, nor will I use Linux on a gaming PC. Therefor I have a Business notebook. So, my only real problem, though it's not reall a problem but annoying ass fuck, is to get a legal, official method for Win 7. I have a key for it, I know the CD must be somewhere in the house, so I won't buy another Windows (especially when Win 10 will be a free update from Win 7). Still, thanks for all the tips. In the worst case, I have to wait a few months until Win 10 will be released.
Cymoril Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 There are legal iso images of Windows 7 with SP1 on the internet. Which version do you need?
Mister X Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 There are legal iso images of Windows 7 with SP1 on the internet. Which version do you need? I only know of digitalrivercontent.net, that went offline, and the Software Recovery page by MS, that doesn't accept my License key. I would need Home Premium, though, if you got another link.
Cymoril Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 I've found two sites: 1. http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/ Lot of versions (incl. SP1) but slow download. 2. http://winfuture.de/downloadvorschalt,2662.html Faster download but only in german. If you wanted a german version I would recommend the second link. You have to update to SP1 with windows update but the download of the iso is much quicker.
Mister X Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 So, it worked with the .iso from Winfuture, thanks for that. It even already includes SP1, though it's nowhere mentioned At least I didn't see it. Now installing latest updates, drivers for the hardware and at last Skyrim <3. Moderators, you may let this thread burn in hell. "Exterminate" please

Seen enough of the " government sees everything / nobody is safe / better equip my tinfoil hat / better burn my computer to avoid hackers " threads around here
