Elves Not Aliens!

It irritates me to no end how people complain and moan about Skyrim's elves. Have these assholes played an Elder Scrolls besides Oblivion? Because Oblivion's were not only shit, but lore-breakingly wrong. Believe it ot not, Dunmer have always had those ridges, and Bosmer have always had solid color eyes. And I'm glad they standardized features across the various mer, because it makes more sense and because it's different than your standard boring-as-shit Pretty Human With Pointy Ears.

It's like if you don't want to put your dick in it it's somehow automatically ugly.

1.  I don't care about TES Lore because it's pretty bland and I've been playing since Daggerfall. Size of an Ocean, depth of a puddle.

2.  The vanilla meshes and overall look of the elves is unique, but it is relatively ugly.  The gauntness of the face, and extremely impractically slanted eyes being the things I personally don't like. If I wanted Elven Vampires, I'd be an Elven Vampire.

3.  Tolkien Elves, while you may consider them boring (which if you actually read Tolkien's work, and watched the movies you'd know they aren't particularly boring), invented Elves in the first place so I'm pretty sure everyone has a right to go "I want these Skyrim Elves to look like Tolkien elves which I like more and which came first".

Basically, stop being hostile and trying to shout people down to tell them that they should like the things that YOU like and not what THEY like.  Modding is about what you want the game to be, not what the lore says, and not what other people necessarily want nor like.

Okay, that's one thing that shouldn't be let to pass without comment.

Unless Tolkien is a Time Lord,he didn't invent Elves as those mythological figures date back to the times when the peoples of the United Kingdom were still warring tribes if not earlier.

They pre-date Elder Scrolls elves by many a decade but they don't owe any more to Tolkien's interpretations of that particular fantastical entity than they do to Keebler Elves or Santa Claus' helper elves.

What's the point of further discussing the matter? The starter got his answer and his happy. Everything else is without importance - it's just debatting without any chance of progress (since it's a matter of personal taste). So Jexsam got rough with his reply.. so what. We're all supposed to be adults - if you're not used to get kicked in the teeth by life and other people... welcome to the real world.

Besides that, thanks for the additional lore. That is the real value of this topic.

Best post I've seen for a long time, I lol'd

Most of the people like humans with pointed ears calling them "elves". However, elder scroll elves are a bit different than lets say LOTR elves.

And i love aliens !

Maybe he is a time lord.

But, anyways, more of what I meant is that Tolkien created the modern elf, in appearance at least though he did take elements from several different elf versions and combined them, not the elf itself and he also popularized it along with others in the early 20th century.  The Germanic Peoples and earlier even the Norse (who called them the Alfar) had their own versions, but most often they were depicted only as being supernatural (immortal for example) with magical powers and supernatural beauty but as far as I know were not renowned for being warriors or archers.  It is assumed that they were not thought of in appearance like the Tolkien elves but rather celestial humans, though as far as I'm aware there's no artistic depiction surviving of them from that time period though there is art from the 1800s where they are usually depicted as being very human.

Santa Clause elves are relatively modern constructs however coming in late in the 19th century and Keebler elves are just Corporate Branding of Santa elves that came in around the 50s and 60s.

the Norse (who called them the Alfar)

Huh, well now i learned something. On a Sunday! The horror! :o

I first heard the Alfar name in Kingdoms of Amalur, no idea it came from somewhere real world related. Though i really should know better by now, everything comes from something.

Anyway on topic, the KoA Alfar were damn hot! Too bad the game was even less deep and even worse balanced than Skyrim.

Elves are believed to have originated in Norse Mythology, they were from the realm Ãlfheimr, which roughly translates as "Elf Home". In fact our word "elf" comes from the Nordic "alf". Unfortunately next to nothing has survived about the lore and stories regarding elves in Norse Mythology, in fact Ãlfheimr is only mentioned twice in the surviving Old Norse texts. All we really know about Ãlfheimr is that it was the home of the "Light Elves" and was considered a "Heavenly" realm, like Asgard.

See, the only gripe I have with vanilla elves is their long chins.  I could live with everything else, but the chins being that size makes it really hard to make a face that looks good.  I would rather have my elves look good and slightly less "lore friendly" then stick to the lore and make something that doesn't look right and doesn't play well with modded assets.  Lore friendly is a stupid argument in the first place because the elder scrolls races have changed dramatically since Arena and Daggerfall and if you want to stick to the lore of the games then Khajiit's would be people with cat ears and tails, while Dark Elves wouldn't be so wrinkly or have those super long chins.

As far as mods go, use EEO.  Here's a few older shots of my Dark Elf with EEO.

I think eyes play a fairly important part in how the elven races of TES seem distinct from human counterparts. With ECE and Racemenu + a skin retexture mod like Fair Skin Complexion, you can adjust the character's faceshape and skin color to look human. Add in an eye mod like Eyes of Beauty which includes human-like eyes for elven races and you've got an elf that looks like a human character. Cheers.

EEO + RaceMenu (and/or ECE I guess) really is the best thing you can do. EEO fixes a lot of minor weird things with the vanilla elves without sacrificing that rich lore flavor, and RaceMenu lets you humanize them to your heart's content.

Here's one of mine to show you that when compared to ao2thend's pics, EEO/RaceMenu really do let you run the gamut between TES and human-y:

Oooooh, is it elf post time? I can dig it. (This will be the post that gets the thread locked)

I personally adore the way elves look in TES. I don't know the lore, won't pretend I do, but they're something different from the fair-skinned blonde rabbits portrayed in most mainstream media.

Leaving with some dunmer.

To me the elves in Tes have zero personality, a generic design for the sake of being different and even most of the people saying they love alien elves use cosmetic mods to make them look appealing.

Change the angle of the eyes back  and you got your standard generic human elf with more visible cheek bones and pointy ears.

Thats how the whole "unique" face looks to me.

Hmmm... When I think that TES elves look ugly I mean that vanilla characters in this game look very ugly in general, and elves aren't a horribly popular race for followers, unless you wanna count human races with pointy ears.

I love my dunmer girls with ridged forehead, angular lines in her face shape and a bit slitted eyes, but I don't think that they have to look like a raisin all the time...

You can make them look more "normal" or humanize them more in racemenu, and still keep them fairly TES, with ridges and such, it is possible I guess. And you can sculpt the ears in racemenu to be as pointy as you like or to have a different shape altogether like I did there. To each their own ultimately.

Is it possible to convert all elves (playable and NPC) into something like the above and how would I do that?

yes you can, all you need is simple files like skin texture, ECE or Racemenu with no additional race required

how would you do that? think!!! its the "fun" part.
