gooser Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I'm at a loss why people upload their images in the .bmp format. It takes up a LOT more space and usually isn't immediately viewable in the browser. Hello, Jpeg? Hello PNG?
jacques00 Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 ".bmp" is a file extension meaning Bitmap (or mor technically, pixmap). It's a common lossless image format that saves RBG information for all pixels without any form of image compression. Some games, namely Skyrim, spit out bitmaps when you press the screenshot button. Some people don't resize, compress, or convert their images and just post them up on the web when bitmaps aren't really a web-friendly file type for people trying to browse fast-loading images (might be okay to see it on your local computer, but bitmaps over the web is murder for people with web-browsers and possibly slow Internet connection). I guess it's just one of those netiquette things that needs to be learned, KIND OF LIKE TYPING IN ALL CAPS.
Thulas Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 There are two reasons for that: people don' know about this people lack the skills to convert the files In both cases they are not to be blamed. By the way: http://www.loverslab.com/topic/443-the-rant-thread/page-60

Thulas Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Really? It is relatively much used though; at least it often has the last reply in that specific section. Anyway, now you know it exists, so feel free to rant more.
TheDriedFinger Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Honestly, I would have never learned to first convert to jpeg if the Nexus didn't have a file size limit in their image share (I think that was where it was) and stopped me from uploading bmp's.

When I hit F12 in Skyrim they are automatically captured in JPEG format. So that is why I am trying to understand where these bmp files are coming from? Hardly any app I use these days captures in a .bmp format anymore. Most are retooled to PNG or sometimes JPG.

F12 is the steam overlay's function for screenshots; isn't it? At least that one also uses JPEG, but the normal screenshots done by TES-games are in .bmp.

Lovely Rose Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Fallouts in game screen shooter thingy mijigy saves in BMPS, it annoys me i usually make it a jpg/png in ps6. But sometimes i dont even worry about it. Not that big of a deal to me. *shrug*
hryh23k9823u Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 It's like those people that uses png cause they think jpg would be less resolution. Learn to compress please, png are meant to simple web alphas like logos, not to fill an entire album of pics >.>
myuhinny Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I rarely use f12 anymore I now use g12 which is right beside my left hand which makes it faster and easier to take screenshots. I ignore many BMP's when I see them as I don't feel like clicking them then waiting for them to download then clicking them again and waiting for them to load up into photoshop.

Although you don't need Ps to load them - you can just use the regular Windows Photo Viewer
ElectricSheep Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 There are two reasons for that: people don' know about this people lack the skills to convert the files In both cases they are not to be blamed. Fixed. No really, nobody's gonna learn for them.
Captain Cobra Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 I like .bmp files. Lets me have ultimate control over the quality of the .jpeg file that I'm going to convert it to. I wouldn't trust the average pleb to make good jpegs anyways.
XunAmarox Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Using bmp images should be banned everywhere. Laziness is no excuse.

Lossless compression! http://superuser.com/questions/386061/is-there-any-quality-difference-between-png-vs-bmp-image-formats
Deedlit Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 if i seen a bmp file and i dnt need open at all (i just open if necessary if its a answer, or a explanation and if i really need that) i just dnt open. Jesus if i can open and convert that with free software like gimp/others why other ppl cant also...

Lovely Rose Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Honestly if people make a big deal about people using another img format than their just stupid >_< its just a picture. deal with it
gooser Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 Honestly if people make a big deal about people using another img format than their just stupid >_< its just a picture. deal with it Because I'm going to look at your images, they should be browser friendly. I don't know any browser that is (out of the box) going to display that image. You are forcing the user to download the images, or at best launch another app to view them. Like what one of the previous posters said - its basic Netiquette. BMP is a very old format and as someone who deals with image formats all day long, its a royal pain in the ass.

No, im not forcing anyone to do shit, I'm not there with a gun pointed at your head saying if you dont download my picture ior launch another app i will kill you. I uploaded it, If you want to see it and i just happen to upload it in BMP. Its your choice rather you download to view or not. Considering i use IMGUR to upload my pictures. it makes BMPs into JPGs by default so *shrug*.
gooser Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 No, but if you want to make it easy for people to enjoy your work, you do take extra steps to make their lives easier. Nuff said.
Lovely Rose Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 It already is easy for people to enjoy the work. People just like to complain and cry when they have to take an extra step or two. XD
gooser Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 Well maybe if you are talking about artwork, that is one thing. But if someone uploads a screenshot as a .bmp and asks for help that is another issue altogether.
