I have no apps open except for Steam and MSE warns me about a threat begin cleaned and it was Steam hitting me with two AdWares. The friggin' jerks. "AdPeak" they were called. It's already bad enough I have to shut it down (run it in offline mode) so it doesn't bog this machine down. And that they have made me pay for games I already bought (on more than one platform in a couple cases). But now adware, too? Seriously? OK, rant done for now.

Guest corespore Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I hadn't touched a PC in almost ten years and until around may i had played Skyrim on PS3. So i was all pleased with myself when i bought Skyrim for the PC and looking forward to modding the hell out of it when to my great surprise it said i had to allow some program called steam to verify the game before i could play it. So 800 for the PC, 200 for extra programs (AV and such),and 60 for the game. For all my time and money i had to basically ask permission from someone else just to play MY game on MY PC......yeah....i have't been that fond of them since. Even if you run steam on offline mode it still sends you "updates" that for some reason wait until i'm in the middle of playing my game to start downloading. I feel worse for all those dumb bastards that think the PS4 and the new X-box aren't going down the same path, they will be DRM for sure and what's worse for them is that they still get no access to any mods or support for their games. I try not to take it to heart though, I'm a firm believer in karma so i have faith all things will balance out and the person whom invented DRM will catch fire while sitting on the toilet someday.

I feel that many people like Steam for the first aspect, but are blind to the second, all the while bashing consoles for trying to go down the same path. In a way, I'm glad that that decision was challenged by the people playing the consoles of the 1984 generation.

You know you can take games like Kerbal Space Program out of the steam directory and run it from another folder without the Steamworks DRM. Seems Steam only will force the issue if it's in the steamapps folders. Mind you this is only for certain games, usually indie anti-DRM hippie stuff (I kid, but still!).

After that download and run ComboFix followed by another Malwarebytes full scan It was MSE's real time protection warning me of a fresh infection (from Steam no less) and it automatically removed it. I just had to do a restart to finish the cleaning. I did update and run a Malwarebytes scan afterward as a "second opinion" and it came up empty. So all's good in my little corner of Nirn.

None of that is from steam, steam actually verifies its software content. By that I mean that I have been using steam for 8 years, I own 347 games on steam wife has over 200 on hers, never had issues with malware infections through steam. I ditched skype and yahoo instead primarily talk to friends through steam now. Hell I joined the friends and family beta and now 6 of my friends plus my laptop and media pc have access to over 300 of my games as long as I am not playing that particular one, If I choose to play one a friend is they are given a few minutes to save. Steam cloud is the best implimentation of that technology through 10+ computer upgrades and complete redos I still have access to all my save games even my 2006 oblivion save games, new pc or laptop I just install steam set it to download my top 50 games while I sleep, it installs my settings verifies my drivers and downloads my save games (I can say no to it) BTW Valve as in steam does not make the decision if your purchases are cross platform that is publishers. Sorry for calling you out on this but there is a lot worse things out there like origin, ea, microsoft etc.

Considering I have had steam well over a decade and I'd say that is pretty damn good. Hell, I've had 100 times more trouble with F'ing MS's bullshit OS's than that come to think of it!!!!

The AdWare was in the game download. So maybe one could say it wasn't from Steam per se, but from a game download I got through Steam. To be a little more accurate I suppose. So there goes Steam's verification, huh?
D_ManXX2 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 it does not necessarily need to be steam fault. yahoo site also had virus through adds so if you view yahoo there could have unintentionally be malware added to your pc through third parties linking through there site. Even though it still their responsibility third party is always a huge risk.

I avoid Google like it's the plague, never use social media and so on and so forth. The two adware instances were in the game download for Torchlight II and the warning came up during the download from Steam. That's just how it is. No biggie. No damage done. It was removed nearly instantly anyway. Just another reason for me to not like and to distrust them, that's all.

Intrusive DRM only encourages pirates and hackers to find a way to circumvent it, then it annoys players and encourages them to download DRM-free copies - it's a vicious cycle. The ones who suffer due to DRM are those who actually pay for their games.

I've used it to IM some Halo buddies of mine, find the downloadable games handy (in case of crashes or meltdowns) and so on. I have several games on my XBox hard drive for that matter for this very reason. I just miss having a disc or cartridge. A physical copy of a game. Something to loan to friends, trade with buddies, whatever. I find Steam to be more intrusive than they need to be.

I in general get pissed when programs dont do what they claim to do. and if one of those dickwaffle-proggys tries to analyze anything that i do on my frigging pc at home, i waste that weasle. Yup, my Steam launcher has cobwebs. I have been starting Oblivion via the Steam launcher, but it seems (I'm not certain here) that OBSE only works properly that way.

I dunno, I may be forgetting a game or something, but yeah... you can run all the Beth games directly. Cool. I keep Steam in offline mode and only go online with it when I feel like it. I launch Skryim with the SKSE launcher and FNV from the NVSE launcher. I guess I'll have to launch Oblivion with the OBSE launcher and see how it goes, but the instructions with it made it sound like it had to launch from Steam.
