Creating a Sim

Bugs

Introduction

Starting to mod the Sims is quite a task and you will be surprized how deep this rabbithole goes (spoiler: there are quite a few rabbitholes in the rabbithole). One modder got 460 mods just for hair and now make a guess what some other modders do...

So don't be surprised if I only scratch the surface for the Sims.

My goal is to give you a solid starting point for a goodlooking game (with options to get a bit less cartoonish stuff in there). As my guide for Skyrim got quite big (getting to 2000 mods there) and is getting very hard to update, i'll be going to try something new here. Instead of a very long list here you'll get an Excel sheet with all the required links, comments and, if necessary, instructions for the mod. You can tick the mods you use - and i have a lot less work (inserting new mod will be much much easier, and way less juggling with websites).

As usual you'll get the mods colorcoded (explained at the top of the sheet).

Additional Threads

As I couldn't fit everything in here I created some supplementary threads that are based on this guide.

Replacing 'Non-Player Sims' is a guide how to replace Sims and includes reworked Sims for the 'Expansion Packs'.

A big 'Thank you' to all the modders out there!

Also a 'Thank You' to Thorsten who started the collaboration. You didn't expect an almost complete overhaul, eh? 😇

General informations

Here I'll add some general informations you might find useful.

Age of mods

The game has been around for quite some years and it also has been updated quite often. Sadly this will impact the mods we're able to use. In general you can say that mods that were created before 2020 are now broken. Mods with scripts can break with every new update (looks like the newest Wicked Whims broke the clothing change of Wicked Perversions).

Same goes for textures. What was good before, can now look odd and/or out of date. Our memory is often enough playing tricks on us, so don't forget to take the rose-colored glasses off and recheck them once in a while.

We'll (aka Thorsten and I) try to stay on top of all of that, but no promises as we might still miss something. So if you notice something odd, please post the problem so we can try to work on it asap.

Groups

I can only strongly recommend to split the mods into separate groups. This will make it much easier for you to find a mod if there is a problem or you find something better and want to remove one.

Spoiler

Animation

Well, this is just a place for improved animations. Nothing special here. But make sure to limit the number of animations as much as possible. They will impact the performance of the game!

Aspiration

New aspirations can improve the game. But be careful. They can get easily broken by an update.

Body

Textures and meshes for your Sim end up here. They are the foundation for your Sim.

Building

More things to build and buy. They will greatly enhance the houses you can build.

Career

Same as 'Aspiration'.

Extension

Big changes to the game. Added functions and stuff EA would never ever officially include in their games.

F. Clothing

Female clothing. Here you can go wild... I have no idea how many mods are there and you can easily get lost in all the available mods out there. Even if it is sometimes hard, try to only download the things you actually need for your Sims. In the end it doesn't help if you download a mod you're not going to use anyway. It is best if you have an idea what your creation is up to and then download accordingly.

Face

This group can be quite tricky. There are quite a few mods out there that improve the look. But if they are not from the same author they can (and usually will) clash with each other. Most of the mods i use come from 'Northern Siberian Winds'. Great textures, if you ignore the eyes, and they really work nice together. Further down i'll give you a how-to for the creation of Sims using his textures.

Fixes

Small mods that either fix bugs or improve parts of the game. What you pick is entirely up to you.

Hair

Like clothing a group that got a gigantic number of available mods. The issue are the available options for the haircolor. Sometimes a combination works perfectly fine, sometimes they look off and/or don't give you the color option you need.

So far it looks like the authors sort of specialize in certain styles. Which then malkes it easier to mix and match different mods for the best results.

HQ Textures

Skip those for a weaker PC. But if you got enough horsepower get them. Its incredible how much they impove the game. The drawback is that you have to manually select parts you need.

Jewelry

Another rabbithole you can get lost in. I can only recommend to get the 'Crystal Creations Stuff Pack', with it you can craft your own jewelry. It will save you quite some time searching the net.

K. Clothing

Clothing for infants, toddlers and children.

Lighting

This is for finetuning the game. Most of it is handled via Reshade (Program / Presets).

Lot

This is only for the sheet as lots are handled via tray-files.

M. Clothing

Male clothing. Keeping them separate makes them a lot easier to find, as the folder for femaly Sims easily gets way too big. Unisex clothing mods also end up here.

Override

Mods that change specific parts of the game. Remember that they can overwrite each other and cause issues when they conflict.

Shoes

There are 'a few' mods for shoes available. If you need more shoes then check Madlen first. He's a great source for those.

Slider

Important tools to improve the character creation in CAS.

Temp

I strongly recommend to add an extra folder to test mods. Some screenshots look nice, but can be quite diffferent from what expected.

Toys

Just some toys for grown-ups.

Traits

Additional traits for your Sims. What you pick is entirely up to you.

Predone Sims

Predone Sims can be really great and are relatively easy to install. But they do come with some drawbacks too.

Complete predone Sims include everything you need and are fast to install. But you have to sort the included mods to prevent overwrites. You do not want to have the same package in several locations of your drive. And there's also a possible problem with versions. You shouldn't overwrite a newer mod with an older file. Usually there's a reason why they got updated in the first place.

With 'loose' predone Sims you'll get the Sim and a list of mods you have to download yourself. This way you have it easier to sort them into the different groups. The big issue here is the possible use of older mods that are broken. They often enough might look fine in CAS but in game they become a black blur. And then finding the broken mod (it is usually the last one you could check), and having to restart the game over and over, is a real PITA.

What both do have in common is that they add so many mods just for a single character. In the end you have no real control about what is needed and you end up with options in CAS where you don't know exactly why they are even needed.

HQ or no HQ

This is something only you can decide. I've got a system that is quite good, so i can handle HQ. But I've also seen some users on Reddit that use older laptops for the Sims.

Although I do recommend using HQ textures (the difference is very noticable), ignore those recommendations if your system can't handle the load. After all, a game is supposed to be fun and choppy gameplay is no fun at all.

Another point is the used hair. Alpha hair (aka the realistic one) requires around 50-70 MB. The 'Maxis Match', also called 'MM', only a tenth of that. On a weaker system I can only rcommend to go for MM hair. A good source would be magpiesan. Simply check the size of the displayed mods to find hairs that are suitable for your system.

Security

Unsurprisingly some a..holes try to get you to install scripts that download viruses and other malware. To protect yourself you should install ModGuard by TwistedMexi. As always download new mods only from sites you know and trust. Skipping a mod is better (and takes a lot less time) than having to reinstall your system.

We (Thorsten is almost as paranoid as I am when we enter the net) will try our best to catch 'fishy mods' before they end up in our spreadsheet. But still, make sure you got a good AV software and install the mentioned mod too.

Tools

Here are some tools you might find useful.

LibreOffice is a free office software to use the spreadsheets. More languages can be found here.

Sims 4 Tray Importer is useful for finding broken/missing mods and exporting Sims.

Updates

Every change is documented. You just have to click on the tab 'Update' to see them...

Modlist

The files contains a spreadsheet with links and additional informations. The SFW and NSFW mods are on separate spreadsheets so you can share them safely. Changes will be listed in the tab 'Updates' in case you want to update your game from an older version.

Standard Game (V. 1.9 and Hair (V. 1.3)

The two files here are for the standard game and its non-occult expansions. The spreadsheet builds the foundation for the game with all the mods I regularly use. The 'Addons' go into a specific direction and can optionally be added to it.

Sims 4 Standard Game V1.9.7z

Ignore the entry for 'HQ Textures' (see below).

Sims 4 Standard Game - Hair V1.3.7z

Advanced Textures (V. 1.0)

Here we got some HQ texture packs. I split them into three separate quality groups so everyone (even those with an old system) will find something useful.

Sims 4 Advanced Textures V1.0.7z

Asia Addon (V. 1.0)

Tomarang (Rental) and Mt. Komorebi (Snowy Escape) are clearly based on asian culture. But obviously some iconic decorations are missing. Same as normal household items with customisation. This pack here fixes this by adding more items and furniture.

Sims 4 Asia Addon V1.0.7z

Girly Addon (V. 1.1)

Pink, cheeky pink, creamy pink, cyber pink, girly pink, playful pink... I think you get the idea of this addon. Clothing and furniture in, you guessed it, 'Pink'. Think of the the movie 'Barbie' (with even more pink). If it is for a girls room, or later for the highschool or university, this covers almost everything pink.

Sims 4 Girly Addon 1.1.7z

Goth Addon (V. 1.1)

This fashion style is hard to grasp as it has changed so much over time. Most think of it as just 'black clothing'. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the guide for the standard game are already mods that can be used for a 'Goth Sim', this here fills some gaps so you got more options.

Sims 4 Goth Addon V1.1.7z

NSFW Addon (V. 1.2)

This here will contain two optional paths for NSFW mods. But remember that they are not compatible and you have to decide which one you are going to use in your game. 'Wicked Whims' is the commonly used path that offers quite a few add-ons. 'Devious Desires' on the other hand goes more into a 'darker' direction and includes things not allowed in 'Wicked Whims'.

Sims 4 NSFW Addon V1.2.7z

NSFW Notes

Spoiler

General

The size of the penis can become an issue as they either don't connect or look oversized for animations. My recommendation would be:

1. Delete 'mini' and 'small' versions

2. Anything 'big' is up to you. I won't use them.

Noir's mods get constantly upgraded. For an easier handling I strongly suggest to put each mod into their own subfolder. This way it will be much easier if you want to make an update to the used files.

Wicked Whims

Read the included instruction in Noir's mods. Otherwise you will run into issues!

Digitigrade legs are integrated in 'Noir's Werewolves Pack'. They are different from the 'normal' ones (in the 'Occult Addon') and you have to make sure that there is no conflict.

Body replacers are no issue, just make sure that there are no overlaps and you'll be fine.

Devious Desires

Read the included instruction in Noir's mods. Otherwise you will run into issues!

I can't recommend to use a different default body. The included one works fine and doesn't require a replacement.

Here the NSFW digitigrade legs (in the 'Occult Addon') show no issues with textures. Just make sure that you got the werewolf textures too.

Occult Addon (V. 1.1)

Faeries, Magic, Mermaids, Vampires, Werewolves and Witches. In this addon you'll find mods for an enhanced magical or occult experience. I leave it up to you if you want to include the supernatural.

Sims 4 Occult Addon V1.1.7z

Steampunk Addon (V. 1.1)

Leather, silk and ruffles - shining brass, polished wood and clockworks. Zeppelins and the elegance and style of the victorian age. Think of Jule Vernes '20000 leagues under the sea' and the works of H. G. Wells. Then you got a good idea in what direction the mods go.

Sims 4 Steampunk Addon.7z

Works well with 'Life & Death', 'Realms of Magic' and 'Vampires'.

Tips and Tricks

In this section i'll add a few tips and tricks you might find useful.

Cleaning the cache

Especially after you have removed a mod, you should clean the cache of the game to prevent issues. For this you have to delete the following filees:

Spoiler

Delete the content of the following folders:

cache

cachestr

Remove the onlinethumbnailcache folder.

Delete the localthumbcache.package.

Sliders

Don't use too many sliders. Having too many can make it very difficult to get the correct one. The mod 'Devious Desires' (should you go this path) already has many sliders included so don't overdo it by adding many more to the game.

Turning off mods

Some mods add quite a few packages and you might not want to use all of them. Instead of simply deleting them I recommend to change the extension of the package (via 'Explorer' and 'Rename'). I simply add '.OFF' behind the flename.

So changing '*.package' to '*.package.OFF' will switch off that specific package completely.

Creating a Sim.

I guess this is the part most people struggle with. But if you follow a structured approach it should become much easier.

Basics

Lets start witth some basic informations.

1. Your Sim got slots where the parts/mods are attached to. Sadly those can be (silently) overwritten and fixing this can take some time.

2. Mods tend to change the preview picture if you change a swatch. So take notes what mod you used and where exactly that was.

3. Take your time. You'll get faster with the creation soon enough. My first Sim took me days 'til i got her somewhat right... Now its roughly 30-60 Minutes.

Figure and Textures.

First step is to remove the clothing and the hair. You want to see what you're actually doing, right?

Also save often. You might notice an unintended change and can't find/remember when or where it happened. With enough saves you can always go back to a previous point of your Sim creation (I usually end up with ~10-20 stages during the process).

Meshes

The meshes are sort of a frame where everything is added to. The textures (you will select those further down) are 'wrapped' around them and it is the meshes that give them their form. Think of it as wrapping yourself in a blanket.

Step Area Selection
Body Skin Tones Up to you

Body

Select the shape you want and adjust parts (like hip width).

Now zoom in to the head (Boo).

Head   Click on the center of the forehead to get the improved meshes for the head/face.

Click at the middle of the nose to get to the improved meshes.

Click in the middle of the mouth to get to the improved lips.

Now the same for the chin and then the cheeks. There should be no edges/extrusions. Let it have a smooth flow.

Ears are optional (I included a mod for them).

Textures

Especially Makeup is very subjectiv. Some like it light, others need an hour and a spatula to remove it in the evening. I prefer to keep it light... 😛

Step Area Selection
Head Skin Details Select a (full)body skin texture.
Choose a pubic hair (or not).
    Select the genitals.
Select freckles to 'roughen' up the textures and avoid a doll face.

Select 'Remove EA Eyelashes'.

M: Select 'Lower Eyelids 1' and 'Eyelids 13'.

M: Nosemask is up to your skintone.

Teeth Up to you. There are quite a few options you can pick from.
Brow Details Click at the center of the brow and select an improved one you like.
Cheek Details Activate the 'NSW Highlighter N3 Overlay'.
  Eye Details Nope.

Mouth Details

F: I recommend to go with the Lip Liner here.

M: Nothing.

Hats   Up to you if you want to use them.
Acessoires Piercings Pick your poison.
Glasses Select one of the available Kijiko eyelashes.
Caution: Using glasses will remove the eyelashes!
  Necklaces Up to you again.
  Medical Same.

Makeup

Eyes

F: Select 'Seleng Eyeshadow' for now (match it to the eyecolor).

M: Already covered.

Eyeliner Optional: Get Glitter N4 Eye Corner. This adds a little reflection there.
  Eyelashes Nothing.
Cheeks Check out 'Blushes'. You have to test which form and swatch works best for you.

Lipstick

F: This one is entirely up to you. See 'Finetuning' further down.

M: Go with a natural tone.

Makeup Select either 'N184 Eyes' or 'N242 Eyes'.

Hair

Lastly

Now you can finally select a hair you like to use most of the time.

Take close look. Do you need to add final touches via sliders?

Are hairlines required?

Now apply your choices to all other iterations of your Sim (box to the left of the sun symbol).

Spoiler

Finetuning

Here we get to the eight different outfits. The first one (Everyday) for the physical look should already be done and now we can finetune the rest. But before we put the clothes on we should finetune the appearance first.

Bugs

Sadly there are a few bugs in the game i can't do much about.

Bouncing Sim Boobies

The two files from this mod conflict with each other even as they come from the same author. That mod hasn't been updated for years so I don't think this will change. They do work fine, so this is just an information for you. RTBT aims to improve the physics and could replace it, but it isn't there yet.

Devious Desires

The internal modcheck of DD seems to be a bit overzealous. It complains about some mods that are included with DD and the number of 'broken' mods couldn't be verified too. I checked every installed mod and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them (aka false positives).

Issues: Textures (Clothing)

As every different author for clothing got its own spin on how to create clothing there will be unavoidable conflicts. Textures or meshes overlap and the visual results can be quite nasty.

Skipping mods and only using one author is not an option. We'd miss so many good mods, so we have to either skip certain combinations or 'hide' the conflict by finding a matching color combination (which I recommend to try first).

Previews for my first Sim are up.

Sadly it looks like the last update for WW broke WP (outfits for the succubus don't work). So I (or better said Thorsten) won't upload the Sims atm. We don't know what is baked into the save (in Skyrim this would be a big problem).

Note:

Files are 'officially' up. Managed to find a few more things to add, others were broken and removed.

For the main files there will be some changes incoming. Found a few buggy ones that sometimes cause issues. Those will be removed in the next update. Male clothing is fine now, but I still have to expand the options for CAS.

@roro9261

Oooops, I just noticed that I totally misread your post (I do need more sleep).

I'm using Open Office here and then convert my file to the old XLS from 2000. As I don't own a MS Office I could only assume it would work. Hopefully this will work out later when I switch to Libre Office (where they still improve on).

Sorry for the confusion.

'Corwyn Rowan' Preview is up in 'Sims'.

Included a male option ('M:') to the creation of Sims.

Reworked a few entries.

Posted (edited)

I've been digging through the web trying to find more CAS options for male Sims. It's quite annoying if you have to go through a chain of websites (longest one was five websites linking each other) to get to the source of a mod.

And luckily NSW dropped a few useful mods for males. Now i can really start...

Starting to integrate the new mods, removing doublettes, replacing a few mods with better ones, and in general trying to reduce the size of the list.

Done, done, done and done.

Naming scheme:

What do you prefer? Alphabetically ('Standard Game') or adding subgroups ('Steampunk').

________________________________________________

Last step before the update: Sorting.

NSW is driving me nuts. The packs can contain everything from textures to presets. I'll collect them all in 'Face' (most of it is for the face anyway). Worst is that there are four different naming schemes for the mods. Spreading them out would make it more difficult to find them later on.

'Presets' will be combined with 'Body'. 'Body' was small and presets are usually part of the body.

'Fixes' (new group) will contain smaller mods that either enhance certain aspects or fix inconsistancies in the game.

Sidenote:

If AI would ever decide to get rid of humanity: I think this would work with little to no resistance...
