Thanks for the link :)

It seems that I have some texture issues, even when I completely delete the 1042 folder and replace it by the clean backup from the unmodded game. Does this mod have any dependencies ?

Or maybe FModel doesn't extract the files correctly from the .pak ?

maybe you have confliction with another peni mod ?  i use modmanager , no problem for me.

The game is unoptimized on pc. Have a friend who crashes every 3-5 matches and he doesnt use mods.

I used to crash after a few games and blaiming unstable mods. Some of them are the issue, but after I lowered everything except textures and model quality and disabled dlss and nvidia reflex I stopped getting crashes even with mods (some of them still crash the game, but now I can reliably know which ones, because I install one at the time and then play 5-6 games to check if everything is fine). I read that nvidia stuff cause problems with stability.

I had a lot of issues with getting this skin in and did have to do a full default from original files.  I then boot the game to ensure it was the proper default model.  Then I installed the peni mod I wanted and it worked.

I'm not sure what file it was, and I know you said you already did that, just saying I had the same problem.  I think I may also have export the previous mod I was using and looked through the file structure to locate anything that wasn't in 1042

From the discord: The new patch seems to have prevented loose assets from being loaded, meaning mods currently do not work. Once again, it is possible that another workaround or solution can be found and if that should happen, I will update everyone here.

Yup it seems we've been had lol. Steam now realizes that the ".pak" file is missing or renamed and fixes that automatically.

I do think another work around is possible but it will be even more of a hassle. You'd essentially have to do the same as before but now *repack* the files and replace the pakchunkCharacter-Windows.pak with your own file with probably the same exact name. That's how I imagine you could work around it. But I'm sure someone more qualified than me will inform you soon enough if that's possible.

They are definitely doing this on purpose though to make it harder. I'm Okay with that in theory as long as they add official mod support instead, but I somehow doubt they will do that. It's not unexpected from this kind of company, but it's still stupid/annoying to actively attack your modding community. It won't kill their game, but it will change people's perception of it.

update 1: It seems to leave your "marvel" folder (with your characters and mods intact) now it's just a matter of making that into a .pak file and replacing the original. However, this does mean it will be even more of a pain in the ass to "test" mods and if they are compatible.

update 2: not sure if .pak are normally compressed or not? so I'm just gonna try uncompressed

update 3: packing process seems to be working got a couple warnings though could be worth looking into in case this doesn't work:

LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Engine]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Game]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Input]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Compat]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Lightmass]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Scalability]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[Hardware]
LogConfig:Warning: Failed to saved backup for config[GameUserSettings]
LogPaths:Warning: No paths for game localization data were specifed in the game configuration.
LogInit:Warning: No paths for engine localization data were specifed in the engine configuration.

As if it doesn't work those could be the reason why and an extra step might be required to make it work.

update 4:  It was taking ages so I cancelled it, and it updated the file to be over 12 gig, the original file is like 7 gig so Imma assume it's compressed and try again but with compression this time.

update 5: so the lack of progress bar and my own impatience was killing me so I cancelled it again to see if it was doing anything and it got to about 5 gb out of 7 in 20 min. So restarted it, it's slow it's probably gonna take about 30 min to package the full thing. Maybe there's a faster way but this is what it seems like right now.

update 6: something definitely went wrong as now my file is about 500mb smaller but well... it's launching so I'm about to find out.

update 7: so it actually got pretty far, it didn't notice I had replaced the file, and I got in the game I just couldn't actually load any of the models. Which ultimately crashed the game. It's a decent start though. Someone just has to figure out what the requirements are for it to work. I'll try uncompressed for shits and giggles just because the fact that the compressed file was smaller than their .pak file is a little concerning. Because that makes me think I'm missing something. Though realistically that's not gonna help because if I'm missing something that won't solve it.

Sigh. Time to not play the game for a few days again. Godspeed, those of you who understand modding. I hope you can fix this by next week. This game is fun, but unplayable without mods at this point. I'm in too deep, too much ass, too many nips, I can't play without them now.

I feel your pain brother, once you pass the event horizon there's no going back...

i don't play the game just for using mods. I enjoy it. If you need mods for games thats says alot. Regardless though... I'm sure someone will find a way. If not... RIP

Lmao I actually only barely just got it working for like a day when *while* I was still adding and testing mods the servers went offline which is when they did the patch. "Unplayable without mods" is wild though. But I guess I am primarily a console players so I'm used to it. But yeah mods is one of the biggest reasons I also play games on PC, and this just feels like they are trying to make PC more like Console and restrict things such as mods and I think that's very much a bad thing. I mean plenty of games would be dead without mods, heck even some games that are dead, only hang on because of mods.

I know enough to know a workaround is possible but not enough to actually do it, or figure out the details.

But like I said I think they really should just add mod support instead that way they can regulate it and make sure there's no mods that effect gameplay but only cosmetic mods. But still I doubt they'll do that for some reason. I hope they will. though.

imo its better to wait for the heat to die down, they patched it first because it was getting attention on twitter, it was inevitable and everyone knew that

Yeah I think there's some truth in that. At the same time the harder they push back against modding the more negative publicity they are gonna get exactly because they got positive publicity for the mods at first. Look if there's a will there's a way, but I think it'd be much better to just come to a "mutually beneficial understanding" because although no mods won't kill the game, having mods does boost the game, increase public opinion and increase the amount of people playing it. Even if it's just by like 5%, I don't think having mods around negatively impacts their sale of skins by more than that. If anything, I'd say it might even positively impact it, as if you own more skins, you have more skins to overwrite with mods.

Bummer.  Wondered when the next attack on mods would come.   I'm most disappointed to lose "I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye" when Spidey ults.

Oh well.  It was super fun while it lasted!  If someone figures out a fix I'll make a new tutorial but, otherwise, at least I'll finally be able to stream comp games.  Hahahaha

yeah? what does it say? I don't think it says anything.

the game is good, sure, but choosing not to play it without mods isnt weird. Sometimes the game isn't special enough to warrant dedication. I'd rather play singleplayer games and story games like usual instead of pvp games in general. Mods made rivals fun for someone who doesn't care for PVP gamess on average. I just prefer story and exploration.

banning doesnt prevent people from modding, its idiotic and they realized that, so why lose a potential custumer when you can just prevent them from dodging the store
