VRAM CTDs?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

After doing a fresh install and readding alot of mods back to do prior CTDs, I began to get them again, so naturally I started to investigate what was the cause. I started monitoring my VRAM and I noticed that it was extremely high and was reaching my limit.

I assumed that this was definitely the cause, but after some further research, I noticed that some people on other forums were saying that VRAM doesn't cause CTDs, it only causes stuttering and texture issues.

So my question is, could my VRAM be the cause of the CTDs? I am also getting endless loading screens to the point where my regular RAM and VRAM will suddenly freeze on loading screens and stay on a certain level. I am stuck trying to leave the Bannered Mare and I get put into a loop of endless loading, before that I was getting CTDs every 4 - 10 minutes whilst exploring...

I have alot of tools that are supposed to help with performance, for instance, I installed the Optimizer Textures mod, I have ENB Host, I have even took the liberty of removing "A quality world map" as I heard this causes issues.

I don't know what else to do, is there any steps I can take that does not involve me cutting down my  mods?

Also, here is a screenshot of my Skyrim performance monitor.

And my load order...

I am not as familiar with Skyrim however if you are having any problems with ram, you can do a couple of things to diag

Dial back the mods that are intensive.

Dial back the settings of your game. Lower screen resolutions, shadows etc.

If that don't work try removing or disabling some more mods.

You just might be hitting the upper limit of your computers capacity.

I am sure there are many Skyrim optimization tweaks that you can try as well. however I don't know those. Maybe some kind soul here can help in that department.

Oh quickly use the verify cache from Steam just in case there are some issues with some of the game code.

The vanilla textures are stored in Skyrim - Textures.BSA.

So as long as this file is present and loaded thru the ini, the textures from the BSA will be used, as long as no file of the same name is installed loose or in another BSA, that's loaded after the vanilla BSA by iNi or plugin file

The official HiRes DLC as loaded after the vanilla file by default, if you use the ESPs.

So if your ram usage doesn't go down, afer uninstalling (or in case of MO unticking) texture mods, texture replacements are still being loaded.

Another hit on VRAM are many NPCs and/or items.

And your game will crash, if it exeeds the available VRAM. Same with System RAM. How fast the game crashes, is a matter of how fast data can be paged out and read back.

Okay, so how do I get that .BSA file to overwrite the modded textures which are in my folders currently?

Make a copy of all your Skyrim Data for backup, then use Texture optimizer to compress your textures Skyrim(not the backup) to 1024k size. In all actuality, you'll end up with a skyrim Data folder of 1k textures, that will bring your VRAM use to 1-1,3 GB use. then fire up Skyrim again to see your RAM use again.

Btway the dlc texture packs are 2k on their own, so it's better to disable their esps (untick them) too for the test. that way all your modded textures will be 1k leaving the rest to load from the default Skyrim textures from the Skyrim.bsa textures (which is like 512k i think).

I will try that tomorrow, keep you update too, for now I am going to bed.

Appreciate all the support thus far!

Simply delete the Texture folder, inside the data folder, because pure vanilla doesn't need that folder and anything that's in there, will replace vanilla files with the same source dir and/or file name. Or just rename the folder, to prevent the game from loading files from it.

And i second what spikes wrote. Optimize texture with DDSOpt, Texture Optimizer or any other similar program.

But be aware: The biggest win, is in compressin normal maps, but by doing so, you wll have blocky textures again (mostly face and body textures), depending on the compression level.

If you're using ENB try this line in enblocal.ini:

In [Memory]

DisablePreloadToVRAM=true

What this does is make it so instead of loading many of the game assets during a loading screen(you will get extremely fast load times), they're loaded on the spot. However, the drawback is that you'll get lots of stuttering.

Another option is in skyrim.ini

Under [General]
iPreloadSizeLimit=

I have mine set to iPreloadSizeLimit=104857600 which is supposed to be 100mb.

Also check this out http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12801/? it's a Texture Optimizer.

I noticed that some people on other forums were saying that VRAM doesn't cause CTDs, it only causes stuttering and texture issues.

That is correct. "Texture issues" are very obvious once you see them.

You need to describe what you were doing during the run with Skyrim Performance Monitor enabled. Something that could give people an idea of what is causing the very steep increase from 1.1gb to 2gb vram usage. You should also mention what texture mods you've installed.

Simply delete the Texture folder

I would strongly recommend NOT deleting your entire textures folder if you have not already done so. What little organization you once had will all be gone, and if any mods you use rely on non-vanilla textures it will show up purple on your screen. Resorting to basic vanilla textures is also ridiculous for a GTX 680 when I've been playing with vanilla textures and more using a GT 650m.

Before even turning to DDSopt, you should be looking for lower-resolution options for mods you've installed. Some mods such as face textures can become grainy and horrendous looking and should not be DDSopted using certain parameters. Unless you are sure what optimizing these textures mean, or are following guidelines from a reliable source, you should not be DDSopting at all.

I restored my textures before reverting a few textures to vanilla, this didn't help much so I decided to try the Texture optimizer and I have seemed to pickup tons of VRAM, hopefully my face textures don't become too demolished, but if they do I can try to rework them.

As I said, I still don't think this is the issues since I am getting infinite loading screens now.

Check that, I am still getting high VRAM outside which causes freezes, I loaded a earlier save. This is very discouraging, I have to be doing something wrong?

How does switching to another interior work out for you? Before exiting the Bannered Mare, use the console command "coc RiftenTempleofMara" without the quotes, it'll move you to the Temple of Mara in Riften. See if you still get the infinite loading screen. If that works, try exiting the temple. If that works the problem could be Whiterun itself, in which case disable any Whiterun mods you use.

Did you make any mod changes from when it worked (including load order modifications etc)?

Another thing you can try to quickly check if it's a problem with your save itself, is the following:

Start Skyrim, at the main menu (before loading any saves) type "coc RiftenTempleofMara", let it load. This will create a new, clean, character/save with a dummy character (default dragonborn look). Once it's loaded, type "WhiterunPlainsDistrict01". If that loads fine it's likely a problem with your save.

In this case I recommend you try the Skyrim Save Cleaner. It will reset most cell values (get rid of items and bodies that aren't in the game from the start). An added benefit is that it can reduce the size of your saves if you've been playing that character for a long time.

Also, make sure you disable any distant LOD enhancing mods.

I'll see if I can think of anything more.

Fair advice, though a little over-cautious in my view. Optimizer Textures is a much more user friendly way to do this than DDSOpt is, it'll do it's thing directly to the installed BSAs without you having to unpack them, and it'll do an archived backup of everything it touches. Worst case scenario, one or two texture mods (eg water) don't look right, or you get the dreaded purple missing hair or body or whatever,  it's usually just a matter of restoring them from source or backup and you're back to normal.

I reckon the penalty for not having optimized textures across a large number of mods is far more detrimental than doing it and having to deal with a few minor issues afterwards. Even if you have a decent rig, having an unholy cocktail of 1,2 and 4k textures is going to cause you a lot of bother down the line.

I find texture problems are rarely game breaking if ever, they're usually fixable. It's rogue scripts that will kill a save if anything will. If uninstalling ENBs and DDSOpting textures doesn't resolve this issue, and doing a reinstall or file verify, or using the game save cleaner....well doesn't that suggest that baked in scripts that have been moving stuff about could be at fault?

I have VRAM issues as well (2 x 1GB Crossfire and I'm heavily modded, so it's a slideshow), but I hope to solve them by brute force with a 4GB R9 290x later this week.

But the #1 reason I've found for unsolvable CTDs is the custom skeleton.  I'm having to reinstall the XP32 skel frequently, and that tends to help with odd CTDs.

Also, clean out anything that has massive scripts.  I was suffering frequent "transition" CTDs due to the full version of SOS.  Busting down to SOS-Lite fixed those right up.  A CTD when transitioning from a small area to a larger one is often caused by SOS "Schlongifying" armors in the new area, so SOS-Lite is better in that case.

Also, for sanity's sake, run BOSS again.  Sometimes I find that the order is shuffled by NMM or some other tool, and I didn't know about it.  Check Wrye Bash to make sure everything's green, and you don't have out-of-order masters.

Finally, check my post here for other tools to clean out your scripts and other cruft:  http://www.loverslab.com/topic/15574-skyrim-savegame-bloat-remover/?p=347566

I did your test, I got to the Temple of Mara and tried to leave, before going back into a endless loading screen.

Whilst trying the TempleOfMara straight from the main menu, I got into another infinite loading screen, I don't believe it is my saves...

I am going to try the rest of the suggestions next.

Interesting update, I dropped my VRAM to 1,500 and I was still at 99% VRAM constantly, I removed my ENB and dropped that usage to 40%, so now I am figuratively having no issues in regards to the RAM, VRAM, FPS, ext, and I am still getting infinite loading screens?

Also, any suggestions on what I should do so I can use this ENB without getting 99% VRAM usage when my VRAM is under the max?
