New to Adult Modding

Hi Everyone, I'm starting out with modding Skyrim for the first time in such a way. I did small mods like ones that added quests and such but never really knew what i was doing. There is soo much to this modding scene I'm not sure where to start when trying to understand some of these mods. Can I get tips for terminology and what i should be looking at when browsing through these mods. I'm not too knowledgeable when looking at some of these mods will multiple files and such.

First off have a look at this pinned thread from here on LL.  There may be other pinned threads of interest to you.  Also keep in mind my personal "expertise" is with Skyrim Legacy Edition, other versions the info may vary a little.

Next, pick  a mod manager.  The pinned thread I linked shows Mod Organizer, I suspect most people here use Mod Organizer 2 (very similar to Mod Organizer and most of the info in the videos still applies) or Vortex.  I like MO2, but there are plenty of people here who swear by Vortex, so pick just one and learn to use it.

To use adult mods, you'll need body replacers.  Only pick one body replacer for each sex.  Depending on your version of the game, for females you might see CBBE, COSIO, UNP, UUNP, BHUNP, etc.  See what outfits that you like are available for the body you  like.  For the gents it's probably Shlongs of Skyrim (SOS).  Trying to use an outfit for a different design than the body you use (for example, putting a UNP outfit on a CBBE body) is possible, but may not look right in game.

There are different versions of the game, it's important to know which you have.  There is Legacy Edition (LE) which is the original version of the game, 32 bit.  Then there is Special Edition (SE) which is remastered and in 64 bit.  Finally there is Anniversary Edition (AE) which is Special Edition with some extra content.  If you just got the game, you probably have SE or AE.  Make sure you download mods only for your version of the game - many/most mods won't work when used with the wrong edition.  When asking for support, it's important to specify which version you have.

Some tools you will probably need:  Bodyslide and Outfit Studio, FNIS (Fores New Idles), XEdit/TES5Edit and Wrye Bash.  Read through some of the pinned threads here for more information.  Gopher and Gamer Poets have very informative youtube videos about setting up and using these tools, I recommend both of their channels.  You'll also almost certainly need SKSE at silverlock.org, make sure you get the correct version for your game and read the install instructions carefully (not difficult at all, just has to be right to work).  Again, Gopher and Gamer Poets vids can help.

When you do start to install mods, only install a few at a time, then start the game and test to make sure everything runs.  Don't make the mistake of installing 255 mods all at once and then having no clue why your game won't start or run correctly.

Finally, be prepared to fail, and accept it as part of the modding and learning process.  Experienced modders all started as newbs at some point, and we all made mistakes.  Learn from them and move forward.

Not much to add to what @travelmedic said.

If you're here for the bondage: DD (Devious Devices) is developed on LE for UUNP body. (*) When you're new to all this, stick to that. When you're more experienced than you admit, or not into bondage at all, just forget what I said.

(*) Yes, it works for CBBE too, and is tranferred to SE, but that comes with its own issues.

This is probably the most confusing, I'm not entirely sure what's the difference between them are, is there any? is there a recommended body? When i using mods from vortex i just slapped the ones i liked together but rarely dealt with them if they conflicted. So I'm not sure what to look for when looking at body replacers. Any ideas with this?

Vortex is fine.  I've never used it personally but plenty of people like it and there are lots of tutorials on youtube if you need them.

As far as bodies, it's not critical one way or another.  Pick one that has a general shape that you like and that has a good selection of outfits that you like.  If it's important to you, not all body replacers have animated "naughty bits" or genitals, so that might be something you need to read the fine print on and consider.  Since you're probably playing on SE or AE I can't really help  you.

As far as failing, maybe fail is not quite the right word.  Maybe a better way to express it would be the more mods you add, the more chance you have of introducing unexpected consequences into your game as one mod overwrites another.  Some common mistakes might include having more than one body replacer at a time, adding or deleting mods midway during a playthrough (generally a bad idea), having multiple mods that alter the same leveled lists (solved by using Wrye Bash to make a bashed patch), stuff like that.  Maybe you have one mod to make Lydia your first housecarl beautiful, and then a second mod that improves her weapons and armor but reverts her appearance to vanilla.  That's stuff that you can easily fix as you learn the tools, but can appear daunting to someone new to modding.

You've already taken the most important step IMHO - you've decided that you want to learn to do it properly and are looking for pointers on how to accomplish that.  Too many people just want a pre-made mod list or just want to throw stuff together with no thought and then can't understand why their game doesn't run well before assigning blame to everyone but themselves.

Quite a difference actually, I started with UNP which I really liked, it is a slimmer type of body mesh but switched to CBBE as there are more clothing mods for the later. I grew to like CBBE as much as UNP. Just look up the different body meshes and you will see the differences. There is no wrong choice here users preference.

As far as which mods user preference applies here as well. Just remember to have fun.

Is there ways to make the body replacers work together? i went on a downloading spree downloading a bunch but that this point im not too sure if they all work together. Plus Some of the mod pages i went too had a bunch of Files and i wasnt too sure which ones were important or not. Its really hard to tell the difference sometimes.

As well as stuff like FNIS are really weird as they dont do anything on the surface until i add mods soo im not sure if I installed them properly unless I add mods im sure will work so im a little scared to just jump in

EDIT: I am using Legendary Edition cause i assume Most modes are for Legendary edition not to mention i bet there are a bunch of resource packs to make this version look better
