Our privacy on LL

Social Media Security GIF

> First of all, I do not claim that this is happening on LL, but I must know if our Private message box is protected from reading by the people who aren't included or added to the conversation. I need to know does moderators and @Ashal have right and access to read our messages and if they do, under which circumstances? You see, I exchange very delicate and sensitive information with some LL members and I don't want them to be read by third part.

> "Why don't you use your private mail for correspondence?" - some of you may ask. I'll tell you: my private and business mails were hacked so many times, although we have a hardware firewall key. So far, LL showed as secure place for PMing. Therefore, I just ask a simply question about our privacy on LL.

So far as I know it is secure even from admins. I say this with some degree of confidence since I've had many private conversations with certain admins about "sensitive" subjects that I'm sure they didn't want others to know about.

While acess through the forum software is uncommon, based on the forum softwares i have expierences with, everyone having acess to the server does have acess to your pm.

While some forum softwares save private messages encrypted, again based on my expierences, it is uncommon.

So basically, if you get ftp acess to the server you can read private messages.

However, based on how the forum software stores the messages, it may be easy to read what you wrote in a pm, however it may be harder to get who you wrote to and what that person wrote back.

General recommendation: don't pass personal or "important" information via pm.

> Well, if they can read our PMs and they do even if we didn't break the rules, it is offense of our privacy on the community. I do not recall we were invited to agree such practice when we joined LL or/and we weren't informed about moderators' and admin's rights to read our PM for whatever reason. :(

If there is a way for Moderators to read PMs I have not been instructed on how to do so. Further, using what tools I now have as a Moderator there is no obvious manner in which to do such a thing. Finally, I have NO interest whatever in reading people's PMs (personal messages). I know that, even if I wanted to do so, I really don't have the time to make a habit of it (RL and certain "special" members tend to eat up my time).

Whelp... guess we're back to boring "how's the weather?" type shit even via a personal message.

Having the right to do something and beeing in a position were you're technically able to do something, are different things.

And here I thought I had bad luck. But that... That goes above and beyond. As I have had the same e-mail address for the past 20+ years, and not once has it been hacked.

But overall I would say that only if something gets reported do they start to go into PMs. And even then that's questionable. As what is said in public can be acted on easy. But the only way to act on a PM is to directly act against the offending user. And being able to read the PMs is questionable at best as, one would think, they would need direct access to a participating party's account.

Meh... not like I say anything in a PM that I wouldn't say in a thread. I ain't got shit to hide (well... except for that one time...) :P But honestly, I think I've spilled everything about myself in these forums at one time or another.

And see.... that's the trust you have to give/have. There is not one single thing about the internet that is 100% secure- no matter what anyone tells you.

> If everything would be for posting in the threads, we wouldn't need PM. Right? ;) I am different then you. Some of my interlocutors ask me about certain things they aren't for public. There is a simple explanation for that: some readers wouldn't understand it and we would be attacked as it is a common practice here by some people.

Curious why you put this in a thread and didn't just ask a mod to begin with. I know @Psalam would have given you a straight answer.

Mods typically can't do that, as already stated, acess through forum software is atleast uncommon.

Just as uncommon as mods having file acess to the server, which would be needed.
