constant 15FPS, time to upgrade computer?

Hi guys, I have about 180mods installed, a big mixture of everything, but trying to keep the game realistic for immersive role play.

The game itself is fine, expect that i get about 15FPS when outdoors and 20-25 indoors.

I have installed various mods to improve FPS like: SSE Display Tweaks, BethINI , Project Optimization, Optimized Texture, and DynDOLOD and tweaked them accordingly. But they didnt really help.

I'm starting to suspect its time for an hardware update.

It looks like you are using ENB. Have you disabled antialiasing in Skyrim Settings/Graphics Card?

What like the above person said. ENB!. Yep horrible to get rid of, and skin textures will look naff, but your PC won't down throttle due to load/temperature and you will have some effects you don't get with the ENB. (and yes that doesn't count for not having good skin textures or the really good occasional ENB shots but horses for courses). Also I used have 12gb memory for a long time, but if you look at your PC metrics you'll probably notice that on a PC which is mostly on that it's doing quite a lot of switching to paged over time, (usually down to big crappily programmed browsers). I upgraded to 32gb and noticed a difference for the better on my big floppy textures load out. (you may or maybe not experience the same benefits - I was told never to talk to retail because they are just the worst).

(10 year old 8120 with a 970 - so you may take my advice and say that's just an old person talking as I wasn't even alive in 2012, and you would be right. However in the winter months, with the snow covering the fields and the heating being flaky, I love the ENB to bits. i.e. I can run it, (admittedly at 29.5 fps capped - but smooth), and it keeps the desk warm. But most importantly the skin looks fine. Play something else in the summer.

If you only get low fps with Npcs around then it could possibly be a dodgy skeleton nif.

I think your ~~big graphics improvement~~ better fps happen pretty fast when you remove SMIM and 4K texture packs.

DYnoLod too....probably would remove it myself, eats up fps an has scripts running to improve the swapping would likely be better if it was entirely SKSE based scripting.

Maybe install it later when you get a 2080 or something, coud always try a bottlenecked 3000 series (requires PCE-4.0) at least that is current gen maybe or just price out a current Gen MOBO an wait till later or something.

Some will say your better solution would be to get a bad ass CPU and bad ass RAM set, something about Skyrim being shit ware that is CPU bound.

So what you might try to do,

Get MSI afterburner, set up its in game monitoring tools

Then just play the game for a bit to watch its usage of GPU, CPU's, and RAM.

I just figured out that my own game is not having to use more of my VRAM than I had thought,

So using default Ultra Settings is actually bad....Might gain some FPS by tweaking it out in the INI setting the described settings to lower amounts.

Well I have had this question myself, since I do happen to play a bit,

Installed MSI afterburner tried out its display settings........

Discovered I was wrong about CPU threading for SkyrimSE its using more threads than I thought.

Figured out that not all of my VRAM is being used, this is because Im not using big texture packs.

Edit further reading suggests that VRAM will increase as you play the game over longer periods of time...So maybe need at least 30-60 minutes in game.

Saw that pretty much not really using a lot of my CPU and GPU percents are not really too high.

Temps are fine.

Tried out some tweaks I found over at STEP forum,

Mostly its related to draw distance of actors and objects.

Set them to suggested settings and blam my own FPS got gains, and yes I am using an ENB, so I also tried turning it off in game and back on in game....Turning it off pushed my FPS up at 59.0 FPS which I have my game capped at right now.

Sure I have some other games to test against other than Beth games just have not gotten around to playing something other than Fo4.

From my reading so far....A lot of players have an FPS issue with these Beth games even with good hardware so its likely a lot of tweaking and finding the sweet spot. Bumping up a graphics card generation really should not be needed people were killing the game back in the day with GTX 900 series so its likely just bad settings and bad mod selection or a tweak mod that is just not agreeing.

I read DYnoLOD helps to improve FPS thats why i installed it.

Wow i didnt turn antialiasing off and this helped with +5 FPS, cheers.

im not sure if removing 4k smim helped but im keep the 4k off for now.

I have updated Bethini to use high option instead of ultra. I think this is helped with few fps increase.

I realised the armour with HDT is cause about 5 FPS drop as well...

I think I dropped mine down to around medium high settings according to the link I sent you earlier.

Then I spent the rest of the night overclocking my Motherboard, CPUs, RAM Timings.....And I am happy to say my grandpa board has made Fo4 bend a knee

It was a hillarious write up and maybe it will be a fun read.
