Yeah it's pretty crazy how Stardew Valley got more going on for it when it's based off a game from 1996. But it offers more character wise and appeals to western gamers more.

Here's the flaws I see with this game on PC, the protagonists aren't modifiable, the mature characters can't be romanced. Most of the female waifus aren't great personality wise...

And they cockblocked 90% MILFS and lazy big titty cook!

Ludmilla is the saving grace for the game, probably the best waifu ever made for the series. Shame we can't turn her more into a succubi sub slut lol..

But the game looks fucking terrible.... Even with a texture mod it's hideous, the combat is crap. The world feels like they went in the Unity store and grabbed the cheapest assets and cobbled it together overnight and yet it still runs like shit on the Switch lol...  The older RF games looked amazing and felt magical with the baked scenes for the 3DS and DS. Here it feels cheap and runs like playing Doom on the TI-83.

If Xseed partnered with Square Enix and used Unity wisely. Then made a storyline like Harvestella using Harvestella characters with RF5 farming and romancing abilities it would have been the holy grail of the genre... It would have toppled Stardew Valley's throne. But we got two half-assed games for the genre this year, yet both are decent and fine but RF5 isn't worth modding really now that I think about it.

I agree with you somewhat. Unfortunately some of the RF fans got really mad for reading my review on other forum and even attacked me, Most of the attacks were baseless though, "You just don't love this game well enough. "This game is amazing and so much better than previous one." "Don't criticize the game if you don't like this type of game." And so on.
Anyway some fans unfortunately will support any kind of game as long as it have the franchise name on it, and that's not only for RF.
I've played previous RF games before and I liked them, since they're were somewhat o close to that generation gameplaywise or graphic wise.
So back to topic, I really wanted to give this game a try, however it felt seriously lacking in all aspect be it gameplay that's somewhat slugish, graphic that is lacking, perfomance that is questionable or even a world that is completely void with .jpg texture everywhere. But the major things for me were the void/empty world and the farming mechanic that was too simplistic and limited. But it may improve late game, unfortunatelly I didn't play that much.
The only thing that I could view in a positive light were the characters, some had good design, dialogue, and felt like individuals.
And it being from Nintendo Switch so it's extremely limited, isn't even an argument. We have some amazing games on switch with great graphic and gameplay (Breath of the wild, first one that comes to mind).

As for harvestella, I liked it way better then this one. Combat was simple, yet fluid, Graphic were good/decent, characters were decent, but limited. However it also have many downsides which RF also shares in common.
Character customization, harvestella is lacking, and you can't create an actual Manly character, male body looks androgenous, I don't wanty a manly bulky character, just a model that isn't so affeminate, no hairs, anyway without further ado, close to no customization, at least RF5 had a few extra piece of clothing for each gender and Female/Male would actually look like that. Back to harvestella.
Game is good overall but has some limitations. It's extremely slow, stamina will hinder your progress early game making it even slower, no voice acting. Characters while good modeled doesn't have a proper relation progress.

Anyway, this goes for everyone, know when to praise and when to criticize as well as accept other's opinion, if you disagree with someone that doesn't make this person a bad person, or someone who deserves your unconditional hate.
If you like a game, praise it, but don't overpraise, point a few mistakes you could found, compare it to the good points and form your opinion.
If you liked a game but felt lacking somewhere, praised the devs for making a good game BUT also criticize the bad aspects, giving a proper feedback and encouraging devs to improve on it.
If you disliked a game, say why, criticize it, say what's good as well as what's bad, be objective

TLDR:
Yep RF5 felt extremely lacking overall compared to how positive it's actually being rated, so I would say it's greatly overrated.
Overall I didn't have much fun with it, I felt restricted/limited with farming, combat was okish, world was lacking.
Harvestella in comparison is underrated. But I can see why it's like that, since game progress is really really slow and repetitive until some point. And has no VA (voice acting) at all.

Overall Harvestella was good, despite slow at the beginning I had fun playing it, but sometimes.

-------
Anyway at the end of the day this is just my opinion, it's not the absolute truth. You may play it and find a particular game absolute amazing while the other a piece of trash.
And finally, do not support and praise a game just because you're fan of that franchise, if you're supporting something despite it being bad, devs will keep pushing onto you bad stuff (hello Fifa).

Honorable mention:
Kynseed release it's 1.0 version.
It's close to Stardew Valley with a dark thematic. So don't expect funny, comfy environment, expect something more "realistic".
Anyway, game aspects positive or negative you choose.

  • Fun gameplay/mechanics (Cooking, combat, Smithing, Alchemy?, a few others).
  • 2D Graphics
  • Good designed Scenery (Dark Theme)
  • Ugly Looking characters
  • World progression - Characters will get old, die, make new families.
  • Newborn characters are randomly generated.
  • Meta Progression. If you complete your "life goals" you can pass your "knowledge" to your son/daughter. Making Him/Her more capable.
  • Characters dialogue are generic, nobody feels unique. Same lines even if you marry them.
  • You can choose your character life goal, If you want to adventure more, open a store, live a farm life.
  • You can romance both genders regardless of the one you choose and also have a baby/twins.

I really like Rune Factory 5 but its probably mostly because I didn't play the previous games. I have no real sense of what was lost, and what's left is still more complex than a lot of other sim games i can play that have similar artstyles (there's of course, stardew which I don't like the look of very much, and harvestella which is nice but it doesn't feel like a replacement to me). I hope Rune Factory gets it together for the next game.

(and before you ask me to play the other rune factories, I know its shallow but I really just don't want to play a life sim game where i cant be a girl and also romance other girls.)

Play the other Rune Factories.

Well, at least Rune Factory 4.

There is a "gender swap" mod for RF4 that swaps the player model and sprites and makes appropriate text changes (pronouns and such) so that you can play as the female protagonist and romance, marry, and have children with the bachelorettes because the internal game logic still thinks you're playing the male protagonist. I did a playthrough of this a year or two ago with the undub modded (English text, Japanese voices) 3DS version and can confirm that the mod works almost perfectly. Fantastic game.

It looks like that mod exists for RF4 Special now as well. That's probably the better option these days since I beleive Special fixes a few minor but frustrating design flaws from the original, such as gating end game content behind RNG events that could take tens of hours to happen randomly. There are ways to savescum to cheat that if you're aware of it, but better just to use the version that fixes it entirely.

I have the game on my Steam Deck, gave up due to sprites and portraits. I mean I love pixel games, but they all look like they're either constipated/relieving themselves or suffering from the plague.... I'm actually playing Rune Factory Frontier on my Wii I dusted off, never got around to it back in the day.

I actually picked up kynseed, I like the idea but I think they have designed the gameplay to be so modularly designed the phrases and speech beyond the story relevant characters is incredibly generic and pulls from a pool of set npc dialogue. I really hope the modding scene comes in and fixes up the sprites and portraits and dialogue because it feels barren in that sense.

Aside from the half nude mod in the second page is there any way to get nude mod on Switch ?

Also I'm trying to get RF4 characters in RF5 on Switch, how do I do that? The mod on nexus only is for PC.

Something I was curious about looking over all these NPC nude mods.....is there an easy/semi-easy way to assign the nude models and portraits to the NPC's swimsuit slots? Or would you have to build a whole new mod from scratch?
It looks weird having everyone wandering around the town butt naked, but then when they go for a swim or to the bath, they put on swimsuits. ?

Portraits aren't that hard. All you have to do is replace the image.
About 3D models, I don't know, I've never tried them. But I think it is possible to replace.

What's the word on Switch mods? I know the mod scheme now is pretty largely dead, but just want to know if Switch ever actually got anything - mostly want to know about the nude fem protag, if that can be on Switch.

Aww, that's a bummer. I thought there was a small chance there was model there, but it turns out to be just a flat plane. Thanks for taking a look though!

Absolutely perfect! Took a picture of Fuuka + the main character take a bath using your mods. Love it.
