How does one locate the cause of CTDs and fix it?

Fair warning, this pertains to skyrim se fetish content. A heavy focus on furry stuff, and bestiality among many other strange fetishes.

So. All I can gather is that there's an issue with navmeshes, and I'm not even certain of that. The mods I'm suspect of are the ones that change textures models etc and possibly loose files if there are any. I also use Vortex which wasn't recommended by a few of the mods but not strictly declared a bad idea. I also use LOOT to manage the load order as I'm fairly new to modding. Slowly learning the ropes.

The mods I think might be an issue are Yiffy age of skyrim, a wolf retexture in a fomod installer, I believe it was animal SOS +ABC (animated beasts cocks) that provided it not sure. Quite a few of the mods were converted by someone else or myself from LE. I also use MNC (More Nasty Critters) and HCoS (Horny creatures of skyrim) I also have CBPC and HDT for the physics ofc, CBBE and 3BA for the better vagina textures for humanoids. These two might be the issue not sure I'd love to know how to figure that out, or have someone else inform me of an incompatibility I'm missing.

Ctds occur in certain areas, like the swamp where the abandoned shack is (the Dark brotherhood is a recurring problematic theme) near solitude, ran into one near windhelm, past the building I believe you find the orc chef for the DB questline not so sure though looks familiar and thats what comes to mind (been years since I played Skyrim so) near the dwemer ruins the bandits have taken over and the issue I actually know the cause of is Astrid. She crashes my game, anywhere she is I can't be, I tested this by entering the sanctuary when she wasn't there, and then when she was. I can freely explore the sanctuary when she isn't there.

I'm one of those "evil" type players so the DB screwing up hurt a good bit but idk how to fix this issue, there aren't any updated guides or any comprehensive guides to this sorta thing. I've manually fiddled with the load order for a few hours and all I've managed to do is slow the game down or break it entirely.

Outside of random areas being locked down and Astrid being a pain, the game works perfectly fine. I've been told many things by google search, and that's navmeshes, loose files, incompatibilities. I'm on mobile so I can't get my load order, but I will when I can access my pc and figure out how to post it here.

Any more experienced modders willing to help would be greatly appreciated. And for the record there are other mods, like archery gameplay overhaul (yes I ticked the patch for it in FNIS) and a few other gameplay changes lime Odin magic overhaul, moonlight tales (werewolf overhaul) and sacrosanct (vamp overhaul) but the CTDs began before I added them. I've tried clean saves as well. My guess is something here is conflicting on adding a texture.

I'm a filthy degenerate I know, I used to disgust myself as well but bear with me here lol. I just wanna mod my game and go about my degeneracy in peace, pls help. Idek how to check crash logs, despite my attempts and looking at logs. I've used notepad to look into it, but someone said notepad++ would be a good idea and honestly I'm not entirely sure what the difference is.

If you do decide to help please keep in mind I'm an idiot, and you might need to be a little too specific for your liking and explain things like you're talking to a caveman or a child, maybe hold my hand a little bit even. If anyone actually has the time that'd be sick. Ty for reading this book, or at least skimming over it lol.

PS: I can be in the shack with Astrid after waking up, but as soon as I leave or moments later I crash. I also crash in the swamp when she isn't there. Not sure if this is important so here it is.

Oh right I also use Ghaan's armor/clothing for females (on the nexus) and Bad Dog's skimpy clothes for males. I had to "build" Ghaans stuff in bodyslide and the vag from 3BA didn't work without armor on until I included "build morphs" and got that going.

hi

Looks like you may have identified the cause, think of a mod that might change Astrid (be it quest, appearance etc) and try disabling them one at a time (make a save and keep it safe!).

Without any kind of diagnostic info, no one will be able to help you directly I'm afraid. I'm not sure if I will be of much help but I can give some general tips which hopefully will assist you. First of all you should be using Mod Organizer 2. If not I'd suggest you to use it because it will make your life much easier. Skyrim CTDs can be very hard to diagnose but there are some ways to find out whats wrong with your game. You most likely have .NET Script Framework in your modlist. If not, install it and it's requirements. Most likely it will give you a crash log after you CTD. Then you can check the logs and download .NET Script Framework's Common Crashes and Fixes to check if your crash corresponds to any of them.

From top of my head, I can think of 2 probable causes to your "Astrid crash". First one is facegen error. Faulty facegen data most likely causes infamous "black face bug", but sometimes it leads to straight out CTDs. If that's the case you can fix it by regenerating facegen data for Astrid by following this guide. You can also use Dark Face Issue Reporter to see potential problematic NPCs. The other one is faulty armor/weapon meshes. You can try running Cathedral Asset Optimizer on your armor/weapon mods in attempt to fix them. However, this method doesn't work every time, so you may have to find and uninstall the faulty armor/weapon mod.

You say that your game crashes when you approach specific zones. While this can be the result of a NPC with faulty facegen data, there are many other potential causes. If the suggestions above don't work you can try the 50/50 method. Basically you start by disabling half of your mods and try to load the game at the problematic area without crashing. Then when you finally get through, you reverse the process by enabling half of the disabled mods and try to find the offending mod.

Also to avoid these kinds of issues in the future, be sure to learn more about modding. Conflict resolution, importance of load order and how to arrange mods (don't just rely on LOOT), making BASH patches, what can cause crashes and most importantly reading mod descriptions! Try to add mods one by one, instead of doing it all at once. Good luck.

Unfortunately, this is more art than science and debugs are often of little help for CTDs. What I can say from experience is that sometimes crashes in specific areas can be fixed by doing a verify content from steam. Otherwise, it's often a matter of figuring out the cell ID for that area then loading everything in xedit to see what's touching that cell. And even then it's not a certainty that such steps will lead to a fix. Sometimes it's just a matter of removing everything, doing a full reinstall, then adding mods back one at a time. I don't know how many times I've tried all of the above only to finally give up and do a complete rebuild at which point that problem no longer occurred. Instead, I got a new problem. Or more usually, problems.

Unfortunately modding is not plug&play. You have to put a lot of work into getting mod setup stable.

Most typical error, that most beginner modders make, is to start with a huge collection of mods. Almost impossible to pinpoint which mod(s) are causing problems in that situation.

Start with a small mod setup. Verify that it works and is stable. Add more mods and test again. Repeat. If you suddenly get problems, then you know it is most likely caused by the latest added mods.

To speed up the process, use a mod like Skyrim Unbound to avoid the slow default game intro.

CTD's usually caused by missing files, bad textures (like using SE visual mods in a LE game), script engine overload or mod conflicts. Some mods are inherently buggy. Read what other modders are writing about mod. Here at LL in Support thread for each mod. At Nexus site in the POSTS tab and BUGS tab (if available).

Mod load order does matter. LOOT is good but not perfect. You have to organize mod load order manually. Try to find examples of load order groups and where to place specific type of mods in load order (NPC mods, Landscape mods, Quest mods etc).

You are using Vortex. In PLUGINS view click on Manage Groups button. Now you can see the default groups and the load sequence. You can add more groups, if you want to. Back in PLUGINS view double click on a plugin. You get a popup window where you can select a group ( note that there are also LOOT messages in that window, which can be helpful, when solving problems). A lot of work but you only have to do it once. Vortex will remember the selected group for a plugin, even if you uninstall mod and at a later date reinstalls mod.

Consider buying Skyrim SE version. Then you can get tools like NET Script Framework mod from Nexus which provides a useful crash log. Unlike the default crash log which is useless.

About creature setup:

- Be careful about using more than one creature schlong mod. Likely to conflict.

- Werewolf skin can cause problems. Usually recommended to choose skin from MNC, when configuring Creature Framework mod

Look into the burnt face astrid fix. it may be happening because of that retexture of astrid occuring late in the DB questline and some of the mods you have changeing so many things involving bodys and what not
