Chastised for asking questions about mods in SkyrimMods Discord. I was asking in the General channel, but still.

  Alright, so I want to preface this little request for discussion with a disclaimer. This isn't me attempting to throw a tantrum or lambast someone for being either too blunt with me or a little rude. I am posting this to get some insight into what I have done to annoy the members of the mentioned Discord and how I can improve myself if there is something about me that needs to be addressed. Anyhow, apparently I have been asking too many questions in that Discord about mods I looking at. Mostly the one to two people that confronted me in text said that I am asking questions for information that can be figured out via the descriptions on mod pages. Understandable annoyance if a little bit gatekeeping. Another point they made that irked me certainly was them saying that I should figure the mods out by myself via testing and reading. This is obvious to me, I have done that with most if not every mod I installed. However, sometimes I get confused by some details and sometimes the answers for the questions I ask are hard to find due to them being hidden in posts, compatibility information being in a separate mod description, etc. It's not like I am spending all day on the Discord asking about every little issue I have. Nor do people have to answer my questions, their not obligated to do so at all. They can just ignore me if they feel so. Yet, apparently I ask too many questions and make "100 question lists". Perhaps they are right, if so, I am regretful for the discomfort I caused. I am asking questions on the SkyrimMods Discord though, isn't that expected?

Without knowing the stuff that was said there is not much to say.

 

Ultimately though for the most part every single person that mods their game will be saddled with having to be responsible for if it works or not.

 

That does not mean all mods are actually work or play well with other mods and well that puts the effort on the part of the person playing with said mod to figure out.  Reading through comments sections can at times give some insight on a mod, but even then you have no idea if the person that wrote the comment is actually really good at using mods or just mad and wanting to blow off steam.

 

The two people that made comments on what you were asking may not even know about the mod you asked about and well telling you to read the description page is well an actual thing you would have to do anyway.

 

There is also the trouble of computing knowledge and experience.  Heck knowing how to program these days actually does not equate to much either.  My nephew "knows" how to program but how to manipulate files and folders nope.  I had all my DOS commands memorized by 5 years old but does a teenage boy today understand how to unpack a mod file and drop the contents into the appropriate folder structure?  Nope.

Same issue with reading instructions, my nephew does not read instructions....He just assumes that it will work and look like it does in the pictures and if it does not well he gets mad.

 

Even if the instructions are followed to the best of the ability of the end user behind the keyboard well, that does not mean that they have successfully installed the mod or that the best possible instructions were provided.  Experience is won over time and that serves the user to get better results with the time spent modding.

 

How the heck is the mod author supposed to understand that he should figure out how to explain how to use zip or winrar?  Even if he does lay that out well now your description page is overly cluttered and well thousands wont read it anyway.

 

There is a lot a heck of a lot of mods where you just have to have a knowledge base to work from that is developed or have an abundance of desire to overcome the gaps.

 

There is nothing that says that the two people you commented with on that server had any of that either.  They might not know anything at all be even more helpless than most at modding making mods, using mods etc.  They probably dont even know what a DOS interface looks like or even a single command that would get it to make your pc do something.

 

For all you know they were in fact trolling you on purpose to get some fun.

Modding takes time and  experience, which you can only obtain by modding and making mistakes, reading vague descriptions, digging for answers in the comnent section and often just winging it by doing stuff blind without having any idea what is going on and hoping it'll "just work". The more you mod and experience problems, the more you learn and can identify potential problems in the future. There is no way around it. No modpacks, no mod collections, no amount of tutorials will change that, despite what Nexus and others may claim. It may make it easier but it'll never be "easy" or "quick".

I agree with @Gameplayerthat it's an issue of knowledge.

 

Many people assume everyone knows what they know and therefore treat like idiots those who can't do what they can. 

 

That's why I patiently explain everyone who ask me questions and try to cover everything that is needed to understand the issue at hand. 

 

Hopefully you will do that too after this experience with those dudes.
