My son had his Xbrix tuned to the reveal and it had a countdown timer starting at like 4 hours... he went and ran some errands, cashed his check, fixed some lunch then the thing came on.

Let it be known, that I didn't sit there and watch the countdown from that point. Only reason I watched it was about 30% curiousity and 70% waiting for it to be over so I could catch up on Game of Thrones and Adventure Time.

So after a couple of days of letting it sink in, I think i've come to the conclusion that microsoft has changed their focus:

  1. the xbox was a video game machine.
  2. the xbox360 is a video game system that had media center capabilities.
  3. the xbox one is a a media center that has video game capabilities.

Yeah all that pomp and fanfare was great, the voice commanding and all that... great. But the only thing I saw that impressed me about the gaming aspect was that UFC was considered a top 4 sports game by EA . . . I expected baseball or nascar, but UFC? I was actually surprised.

And then there was the fallout based on the lack of answers to the burning community questions: always on internet, used games. Of course if you have even a cursory interest of video games, you haven't been able to get away from blog posts on the subject(s) the last 2 days. I use Flipboard (a news aggregator) on my Android devices, and the tech and gaming categories have been packed to the gills with hate.

So here's what it means for me the non xbox, pc-only gamer: So what.

All the voice commanding, the snapping shit, the realtime shit. . . so what. You just KNOW that they had a gong show of ten-hundred techs and developers running around making sure that one machine ran absolutely flawlessly. Setup alone for that one machine was probably in excess of 100 hours. But when you get yours home, you're going expect the thing to run perfectly on a :15 setup? Good luck. So all those Whells and Bistles mean exactly jack and shit.

There was nothing game wise compelling in there to entice me to buy one of those things. I can't go up to Vintage Stock and pick up a shitton of cheap games to just burn a couple hrs. There's clear no leap in resolution or capabilities... it's just another box to go on my tv stand, and I already have a nice pc acting exactly how I want in my living room. The "convenience" applied by the voice control and the HAL 9000 eye staring into my soul while I watch porn action movies isn't exactly worth the change. IOW I'm not convinced that the additional convenience is worth the inconvenience of learning (and setting up) a new system that I don't have complete control over.

Therefore, So What.

Bottom line: today, I say pass. At some point that opinion may change but for now there are 2 chances that I will buy one: slim and fat.

What isn't horrible about this console? I can't find a single thing I like besides the controller maybe. Name is horrible, design is way too bulky. Too much emphasis on Kinect and other useless apps. Then you go to the technical side and you find out that you have to pay a fee to play used games, which an Xbox official said it would be the game's full price. Developers have the opportunity to make always online games and you have to install every single game into the device which only has 500gb. Ohh you can't replace the HDD from what we heard so far. Console also has to do an online check every 24 hours, among other things and apparently Turtle Beach is the only one who will be providing headsets for the ONE.

Seriously, this console might very well be headed down the Dreamcast road, except for the fact that the Dreamcast had good exclusives.

Just another oversized, overpriced DVD player with a game function. i think i  will stick with my laptop, I don't think the xbox one could go through the punishment My laptop has, Laptop has been sat on, slept on, eaten on, its fallen off tables, chairs, The laptop screen does not work, the keyboard is stuffed to the brim with food and the fans sound like an asthmatic is breathing through a straw at you. I will give microsoft the benefit of the doubt and say they are coming up with some very intresting idea's. but its not enough for me to start playing console's again.

Didn't paid much attention, but when it came out, it looked pretty underwhelming.

How consoles are going, I'd say it's like those signs of the repeat of the 1983 console crash. I'm happy with my rig that, why I should buy a console?

How can people be ambivalent to microsoft shoving DRM so far up your ass you can feel shit in your mouth , ambivalence is probably what got steam to the DRM hungry state they are now .

Ambivalent because I'm not a console player and have no desire to ever own a gaming console. Therefore it doesn't affect me and I don't care.

And if you think STEAM is a drm hell, then that pretty much proves how shitty the ms stuff is. win8 pissed off the overlords of drm hell to the point where they decided to make their own machine.

ROFL. Steam is actually a step up from that XBOX ONE garbage. Steam allows you to play offline, and doesn't charge you monthly to play a game you've already purchased.

It also doesn't get into my web cam and charge me extra for anybody else it detects that happen to be in the same room as me. (Kinect2 Bullshit). Just read about how if you're playing a game with kinect and it detects more people than what you've payed for it to allow, it will charge you extra. Seriously? What the fuck is that shit?

I'm not a console-war mongering person, but it doesn't take one to see how badly Microsoft fucked up with this. I have a 360 and PC, I enjoy them both equally but I will not be buying this Xbox one.

If I do get a next gen console, it will be PS4 for the following reasons:

- No constant required internet connection to play something I've payed for.

-No monthly fee to pay for LIVE just to play a game I've ALREADY payed for. No way in hell am I paying 15 a month on TOP of what I already payed for the game, just to play it.

-No "Fuck you, buy it new" message when I play a used game. I don't know about the rest of you, but when Im not sure about a game; I like to buy it used just in case it turns out to be another Mass Effect 3. (Ha! Marauder Shields FTW))

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And to be clear, I don't hate Xbox. As I said I own a 360 and PC and I haven't had a playstation since the first one. However with these beyond stupid "features" that Microsoft has added, I will be switching back to Sony.

So much failure MS has put into the X1...

I believe that they have indeed lost their minds... (And here I thought Nintendo had lost the plot! XD!)

And they once made a great console! (Xbox 360 anyone? XD!)

Interactive movies are the future of gaming? I don't think so.

They did so much RIGHT with the 360! (Although I'm not impressed with having to pay fees to play online each month on XBL, not that I play online or anything, so my opinion is null and void there....)

But now that they've done this, they've taken about 1000 steps backwards, fell off a cliff, landed in a pile of raw sewage, inhaled toxic waste, pooped it out, and used that to make this abomination of gaming. (I may have exaggerated just a teeny tiny bit! XD!)

Game crash coming? In a way I'm hoping so, so that another company arises from the ashes of failure to create NEW, GOOD QUALITY games, consoles and whatnot.

And I think that's enough outta me.

Or Sony something incredibly stupid, like "Oh, we're also going to charge for 2nd hand games, make it so that it has to connect to the internet once every 24 hours, and install a device that records and monitors your every move and can't be switched off and that is integral to the PS4" ... you laugh now, but it could happen.

I could care less either way as my PC kicks the shit outta both of these consoles, plus cheaper games, no online fees, etc. It's just better.

Call me a PC elitest but you can't deny that PC's are far superior to consoles in pretty much every way.

Well, I too am a PC elitist, and right now I'm laughing my ass off. So you won't find any arguments from me!

There is only one thing about your post I disagree with:

I'm no PC elitist, not in the slightest. But I can say with absolute certainty that Microsoft done goofed.

Microsoft, you had ONE task! Improve the specs of the 360 so it can handle better games. Even if it didn't have reverse-compatibility i'd buy it. Hell you could make a LOT of money by selling an attachment that connects to the One's USB port, assuming it has one, that plays 360 or even Xbox Original games. I probably wouldn't buy that because I have a working 360 and original, but still...do I have to do all the thinking around here?!

@ Angrybird,

Saying "PC games will stay shitty" somehow implies they are better for consoles, which they're not, I'd say standard are shitty across the board. Overall though, PC has hods of better games, if only because it caters to indie developers which consoles are trying so hard to kill.

I wouldn't say consoles are trying to kill indie games at all. They're starting to embrace them, in fact.

I personally prefer the PC platform, but I've been both a console and PC gamer for many years and only recently chose to focus solely on the computer; mostly for financial reasons. The "PC games will stay shitty" comment, that does rub me the wrong way as well. The PC may not get the recognition it deserves, but it's getting a wider variety of games and access to games on the platform is better than ever thanks to services like Steam, Desura, GoG, and so on.

To be honest, another reason why I chose to focus on the computer came from the fact that it doesn't really seem like there is much at all that consoles have to offer that a computer doesn't. All that comes to mind are fighting games and Japanese RPGs...the latter of which I don't ever play anyway; but to each their own. And even then, you're starting to see publishers make PC versions of games like that as well; especially in the case of fighting games, since most modern arcade hardware is PC based anyway.

But I digress.

I meant that the status quo will be maintained, games aren't shitty on the PC they just aren't as good as they could be because of economics, still better than consoles in most cases. And what Indie games? People talk and talk about indie games but no indie game has had a big long lasting impact on me besides Minecraft which is just a lego simulator without anything else going for it, unlike memorable bigger budget titles in the last 10 years that we all have.

FLT, Mark of the Ninja, Thomas was Alone etc, etc... were all cute and all but none had long lasting impact and will be forgotten in time they are a curiosity, an anomaly in a world of bland shooters, the big kickstarters? Torment with 4 million? Costume Quest cost the same and that was the scope of game you got, can you make a modern Torment with the same density as the old one for that ammount of money? I know little of game development but I'm betting on a no.
