Babychucker Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I don't know how many of you even know about the Oculus Rift, but I thought I should at least show it to you all because of how exciting it is to me, and what it could bring to gaming and modding as well. Here are some links that you should look at http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/ http://www.mtbs3d.com/ and some pictures... [spoiler=The design for the consumer version] [spoiler=The Devkit] [spoiler=And looking inside] Now I mainly just want to know what you guys think of the future of gaming and adult gaming, and if any modders on this site were ever planning on using something like the Rift to make their adult mods more immersive.
polluxval Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I really hope is not another Virtual Boy charade. That thing got my eyes bleeding.
quin666 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 I really hope is not another Virtual Boy charade. That thing got my eyes bleeding. This and look like something from ghostbusters.
Babychucker Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 I really hope is not another Virtual Boy charade. That thing got my eyes bleeding. I have been following it religously for a few months and from everything I have seen it will not be another virtual boy, because the technology is finally here with smartphones providing very high resolution displays that are very small and sensors that enable the Oculus Rift to have VERY low latency headtracking that reduces lag and makes gaming with a VR headset almost perfect and it can only get better from here.

Nonsense667 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 All I want, is for them to make a jump scare horror game for it, and record the reactions of someone playing it. Youtube comedy gold. I mean seriously... that's the thing about horror games... they scare the SHIT out of you... until you see the edges of the screen, look around your normal room, and realize you're safe. With this... that can't happen. Should be interesting. :3

The Irreverend Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Am I the only one who doesn't find horror games scary at all?

Astaroth-Lite Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 Am I the only one who doesn't find horror games scary at all? Oh please, I even find non-horror games scary sometimes.
Thorazine Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 A newer look at the Oculus Rift: Answers some questions for me, especially about people that require glasses.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 It'll follow the same fate as everything 3D; it'll fall into fad obscurity, only to be revived in another decade, only to have it fade again. Things that are touted as THE FUTURE more often than not tend to fall to the wayside.

Things that are touted as THE FUTURE more often than not tend to fall to the wayside. I'm still waiting for my goddamn jetpacks and hovercars.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 I'm waiting for my NUCLEAR POWERED ROBOT BUTLER and have my entire house be rigged up to push buttons. PUSH BUTTON, RECEIVE SANDWICH
Astaroth-Lite Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 That would be so inconveniently convenient.
The Irreverend Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 The device looks like it could be interesting, Although, it looks like games will have to be developed specially for it, so I am not sure it will catch on. The major problem I have with it is more a problem I have with virtual reality: I like to have awarness of what is going around me. Plus, I tend to drink something when I play games, so that would be tricky with the helmet. As for horror games, which ones are scary? I have tried Amnesia (as that is the one perenially brought up as being very scary) but so far (I have played it for only a couple of hours) I am not finding it scary, but I guess it could get scarier.
Athstai Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 It'll follow the same fate as everything 3D; it'll fall into fad obscurity, only to be revived in another decade, only to have it fade again. Earlier attempts failed because the technology wasn't ready and it was unaffordable for the masses. Both seems to be fixed. In the end VR WILL prevail, there is no doubt about that, the question is just if it is already the time for it. I have ordered one, but pretty lateish so I suppose it will take another month or two to arrive (that is if it doesn't get hold back by customs). Can't wait to see if I can make it work with Skyrim, the game and its engine would be pretty perfect for VR - not too fast paced and highly modifiable.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 VR will prevail just like we'd have atomic robot butlers, push buttons houses, flying cars, colonies on the Moon by the 1980s and be at Jupiter by 2000, all whi9le wearing shiny silver clothing and talking about how gold is worthless because we can make it in labs now. But then who knows, I could be wrong and turn out to just be a crank old man who wants those darn kids off my lawn with their fancy headsets and their music and hullahoops.

It is something I plan on fiddling with a great deal, as soon as it arrives There is a 50% off Razer Hydra deal for anyone getting a Rift devkit, which I took advantage of. After toying with it for a while, I don't see them as a replacement to the keyboard and mouse for action/FPS games, but for non-action oriented, puzzle or social games, the interaction they allow should be very beneficial. Combine this with the Stinky Board and you have a damn good setup. Of course, progress is slow - no animator/model maker - but progress is progress
Babychucker Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 Some recent skyrim gameplay with the Oculus Rift.
Ooli Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 first of @skyrim: playing Skyrim with a HMD is a bit different than 3d on a tv, as its showing the immersionbreakers really fast and quite pronounced. Like Mages who run around in Skyrim holding always their hands in the face: you have to add the magic effects in the hands in your brain for weapons the hands are around the shoulder. in general if someone mods the dragonborn to a 3 year old, the first person view would get an oscar for best immersion in a game. how well Oculus Rift performs and can change the market depends mostly on games like: Sinful Robot as they made quite the news, and this way get the interrest of many potential customers: http://www.sinfulrobot.com/press.html on the sidenote it seems based on some sites, that most thrixxx games are compatible with Rift, dunno if the kinect support is only in some games, or in most(for me it was the first time of hearing of the kinect when they released their kinect videos and the press/youtube/MS got haywire). Dunno how well the 3D Porn movie market performs, but if its still somewhat alife it might bump the HMDs a bit. and when you look at the prior changes that where made on the market depending on the Porn Industry: Google Translate of a Newssite it could make it, depending on how the industry pushes it or not(for Online Content i would mostly look at Thrixxx, should be enough if they support it).
cobme Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 If this thing does work as nice as it looks then I'm all in to give it a try... Playing RPGs with such a thing would be probably mesmerizing! I'm just a bit concerned as to how dangerous this is for the eyes and health , you'll probably have to take a break every 30 minutes AT LEAST to avoid eyesight damage or what not.

This is one reason people get into modding Skyrim and the like.
