Can't barter with shopkeepers?

So, after a long night of trying to play around with FNIS and finally getting romance to work, I have now stumbled onto a strange issue: some merchants won't trade with me. At current, the innkeep in Whiterun won't sell me a room or any food and Belethor won't let me shop at his store. For some reason, I can still trade with the stall traders in the Whiterun square, as well as the blacksmith, but why are certain traders not letting me trade with them?

Many reasons and probably many mods that could interfere.

 

Just some examples

  • mods could adjust the available shop hours and limit them
  • mods could change required factions
  • mods could alter the PC's hidden attributes so that a do-not-trade checks become valid

Hard to tell from your description.

do you use SL dialogues ?

It provides a spell which solves this kind of conflicts.

Attempted to install SL Dialogues to see if that worked, but its master file isn't the version that I'm running with (Sexlab Romance, on LE). I don't have any bounty in Whiterun so I'm rather sure that's not the problem.

As far as I can tell, I don't have any mods that alter any of those attributes. All that I could think of is mods that screw with dialogue options (I have Jobs of Skyrim installed so maybe that?). I'd be willing to share my mod list if need be.

To elaborate, it seems to ONLY be merchants that can be found inside shops. Belethor, Hulda, and the Alchemist in Whiterun will not perform their normal business tasks. I have not checked with the indoor blacksmith in Whiterun, but all three of the stall merchants and the outdoor blacksmith still trade with me. To clarify, I cannot do any trading with these indoor traders, and normal hours still limit the traders that I can trade with.

Is there any dialogue involved or does it just not happen when you try to barter?

 

Another obvious question. Has the barter ever worked or is this a brand new install?

Skooma doesn't have anything to do with this.

There isn't any dialogue. I go in to talk to Belethor, for example. I have the dialogue for Sexlab Romance, but that is the only dialogue option. In Hulda's case, I can talk to her about the Jobs of Skyrim mod activities, as well as several other general questions, but the dialogue option to buy food/room isn't there.

Thats actually a good point; this is a fresh install. I just felt like getting back into Skyrim so I went and redownloaded and have just about finished modding the game. I actually wouldn't know if barter worked free of mods because this install I haven't played without my current mod listing.

Update: I checked around. Only one indoor merchant works so far (the Drunken Huntsman) and the rest (Blacksmith, Belethor, Alchemist, Bannered Mare) in Whiterun do not work. Outdoor merchants (Carlotta and the outdoor blacksmith for example) DO give me the dialogue option and I can trade with them as normal. Went further to test this and checked in Windhelm and Markarth. In Windhelm, only the tent merchants (next to the blacksmith) can trade with me. Windhelm inns, general store, and blacksmith will NOT trade with me. In Markarth, oddly, the general store and inn both have normal barter dialogue options, and I can even buy a room. It really seems like this is spot effecting merchants and I have no idea why that would be.

Also, possibly unrelated, but scripted dialogue scenes also seem to be bugged in locations. The conversation between Adrianne and the one imperial dressed Battleborn in Whiterun has bugged, and the two have stood there for days. When I entered Windhelm, the two guys being racist to the dark elf didn't trigger, and all of the people involved just idled in front of the inn (same thing for the conversation in front of the pawn shop). Notably, the murder happened upon entering Markarth, so it seems all kinds of borked.

Another Update: Attempted uninstall and reinstall, same problem. Played around with the alt start mods and FNIS to see if they screwed with it, no dice.

Here are the current problems:
-Alternate Start mod occasionally triggers crash on sleeping in the bed. Note, this was not a big problem with prior NGs but it just became one on my last two.
-When there isn't a crash on Alternate Start, I always use the bed and wake up in the cell that the game starts in. I do not teleport to my selected alternate start option, and instead wake up naked, locked in the room.
-VARIOUS merchants refuse to trade. Also realize that when trying to deactivate Sexlab Romance, I did not have any conversation options with figures like Balgruuf, his thane, and all the merchants that won't trade.
-Upon finishing Sexlab animations, I can't use any commands tied to my mouse. Reassigning attack to a keyboard bind instead of mouse bind lets it work, but M1, M2, and scroll wheel don't do anything.

I don't really know much about mods and have always been able to solve light conflicts, but I'm really at the end of the rope here. Not really sure what to do aside from uninstall all mods, boot the game up with each and every mod install, and try to find out which mod is making all of these issues.

You can look in tes5edit, load all mods,click

skyrim.esm, click NPC, prisoner should be on top, you should have (4) factions, I'm curious about player faction and playerownbed faction, each should be set to 0, maybe other mod overwrites this, xedit will tell you

not related to your merchant problem, but do you still need "Realistic Ragdolls and Force" with "XPMSE"?  I thought the features of Ragdools were integrated into the skeleton mod now????
