By blowing up the plane which was going to take the Ark back to Germany, he managed to extend the war by another 4 years. Because if the Ark had been opened in front of Hitler and his high command, they would have been the ones with sad melty face.

Personally, I like the unassuming capability and raw talent by the Jack Reacher character. It's the mark of a true professional who knows their combat capabilities, and does everything in their power NOT to have to use them. And the knowledge of the battlefield as well, of course.
