Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_EUROPE_HORSEMEAT You ask me, all the companies involved should be shut down, and whoever was involved should be sent to jail for as long as possible.
ChancellorKremlin Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 We Brits like horse meat about as much as you Americans like Salmonella in your peanut butter. Honestly KT, why is it always an "us and them" approach with you? What kind of stupid, needlessly inflammatory question is that? Its trolling plain and simple. You're on 9 points mate, don't push it.
LordJerle Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 o.O Brits? What is this, World War 2? I'm from the US, and I'm offended -.- Brits. Seriously. WTF, man?
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 What's with being offended over nothing, they're British, and Brits has been a polite way to refer to them for centuries. Whats next, taking offense if An Aussie calls you a Yank ?
ChancellorKremlin Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 You know perfectly well that isn't the problem with that sentence.
Dude500X Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 A guy walks into a Burger Bar in Britain and the cashier asks "What type of burger do you want sir" the guy replies "I'll have one with about $5 each way thanks" If you get it you rock.
Captain Cobra Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 o.O Brits? What is this, World War 2? I'm from the US, and I'm offended -.- Brits. Seriously. WTF, man? I prefer the term Britbottle myself. What are you going to do about it?
Something Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Obviously, the term "Brit" is offensive. Even as an American I recognize that to be extremely offensive and demeaning. That's why we call 'em Fluffer-nutters.
Emily Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Dead pool address japanese as 'Jap' and afro american as 'nigga' as well. back to main topic. Fact is, The British & french ate horse back in ancent time.
Veta Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I don't get it , Why are people so butthurt over this , so killing chickens , pigs and cows in millions is considered normal yet when it happens to horses no ?
PsychoMachina Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Because there is this sacred love for horses just like cats and dogs.
FruitLoop Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_EUROPE_HORSEMEAT You ask me, all the companies involved should be shut down, and whoever was involved should be sent to jail for as long as possible. Nah, I imagine it's just some disgruntled employees somewhere switching labels or something. Really, it's no big deal since until we were told nobody actually tasted any difference in the foods they were eating, but now we know we're apparently 'disgusted'. The real issue is the sudden realisation (well, for a lot of people anyway) that we have no idea what we're putting into our mouths with processed food after all. What if it had been contaminated animal brains, spinal tissue, faeces, etc. instead of horse/pig meat? Without DNA tests we really have no idea if it's happening right now. Pig eyeball tissue in your tofu/soya products anyone? Seriously though, I think it's a good thing it's happened. Maybe companies will take responsibility in the future and maintain an active role in food sourcing. Or maybe they'll just go back to business as usual once the hubbub's died down. As an aside, it's actually made me wonder what horse meat tastes like.
DoctaSax Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Horse steak's pretty good, if not overdone.
gregathit Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I don't get it , Why are people so butthurt over this , so killing chickens , pigs and cows in millions is considered normal yet when it happens to horses no ? Because there is this sacred love for horses just like cats and dogs. No, No, No. It is the cat and dog lovers that are pissed off and raising hell about this. Horse is the prime meat ingredient for their beloved pets food and if McDonald's buys it all up then what the hell will fluffy and muffy have to eat!!!!!!!!! Heaven forbid they would have to switch to Tuna! ROFL!!!!!!!!! Edit: Oh, and what the heck are all the kindergarten kids supposed to snack on if Elmer's stops making glue sticks due to the lack of horse meat!!! They would have to switch full time to just eating their own boogers! THE HORROR!!!!!!!
Guest Plastrader Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 The OP link doesn't work but I've been following this on the news. As mentioned, the problem isn't the horse meat itself, but that it wasn't labeled as horse meat. If no one cared about what type of meat they sold or packed we could end up with large shipments of meat from, say a hospital. Like left overs from amputations and so on. To extend this to its extreme. And we wouldn't want that would we? One thing I don't get though is the "OMG its horse meat!"-arguments people they interview keep going on about. So that is basically what the news reports about, not the actual problem... But then again, just talking about the problem of not labeling the meat the correct way wouldn't draw as much attention. Horse meat used to be a delicacy for sandwich spreads and so on. Until the activists claimed this to be something immoral. No I wouldn't eat a cat or a dog, because they're pets. However horses, cows, chickens etc aren't and has never been historically. There are however contries where they do eat cats and dogs. We think that to be wrong, while we are eating things the people of the contries I'm reffering to thinks we are complete morons eating <insert animal here>
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 I don't get it , Why are people so butthurt over this , so killing chickens , pigs and cows in millions is considered normal yet when it happens to horses no ?I think it's mostly the fact that a large amount of food was mislabeled. This opens up a massive threat of contaminated foodstuffs. Basically, if you sell food, lie about the meat in it, people will be angry. And if it turns out to be something (even if perfectly safe to eat) uncommon, people get just that much more angry. Obviously, the term "Brit" is offensive. Even as an American I recognize that to be extremely offensive and demeaning. That's why we call 'em Fluffer-nutters.ROFL, haven't heard that one before. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_EUROPE_HORSEMEAT You ask me, all the companies involved should be shut down, and whoever was involved should be sent to jail for as long as possible. Well this sounds too widespread to be a few pissed off employees, if that's the case obviously they should be treated just as harshly. Horse steak's pretty good, if not overdone.I've heard that before, never had a chance to sample it.
ChancellorKremlin Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Just to make this clear, I don't think people are having the problem with "Brits" being used, that's not offensive and at no point was this even called into question. Those arguing so are basically using this as a straw-man, and they know fine well what the issue is. The issue is the way you've worded the topic. So YOU Brits (us and them again) like horsemeat? Its fairly obvious we don't like horsemeat, or else there wouldn't be a massive furore over it. The problem here isn't the horsemeat, which I think has been blown out of proportion, but the labeling, or lack thereof. Not to mention, the very real issue of health problems caused by human ingestion of a tranquilizer drug commonly given to horses. Personally I think this practice must have been going on for a few years. No one's died, so it is obviously not lethal. That doesn't mean farms and food manufacturers can get away with the practice though. Anyway, its an insensitive way of bringing up such a topic, which is why I replied "about as much as you Americans like salmonella in your peanut butter" - something you obviously don't, and neither would we. So in the future, try and have some tact.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Sounds to me like you personally wanted to be offended. The fact was no offense was meant, it was a humorous take at a disgusting move my someone in a company providing food. As for all the rest you just said I agree 100%, there needs to be a massive investigation, and noone should get away with anything in this.
Dude500X Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Brit is about as offensive as Yank. If you really want to piss off a Brit call him a Pom.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 16, 2013 Author Posted February 16, 2013 Brit is about as offensive as Yank. If you really want to piss off a Brit call him a Pom. Never heard that one. And Yank (coming from the continent) is not offensive at all. Hell, during the war of 1812 the most successful American privateer was a vessel named Yankee.
gregathit Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 KT, you clearly have not made it into the former confederate states. Go call a North or South Carolinian a yank and be prepared to get knocked on your ass. A "Yank" is pretty much a non-offensive term to those who live in states that either were part of the north or did not exist yet.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 17, 2013 Author Posted February 17, 2013 KT, you clearly have not made it into the former confederate states. Go call a North or South Carolinian a yank and be prepared to get knocked on your ass. A "Yank" is pretty much a non-offensive term to those who live in states that either were part of the north or did not exist yet. I'm born and raised in Georgia, and my family tree goes back to (and beyond) a colonel in the Continental Army during the revolution. I also know my history, and historically a 'yank' or 'yankee' was a term for Americans in general, and today it is a broad term for Americans in many countries. It only refers to northerners DOMESTICALLY.
gregathit Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Well, perhaps some folk are a bit more touchy than others. The aforementioned two states as well as Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee people I have met use yank as a derogatory term mostly. I used to travel extensively and most folks in these states were almost hostile to me until I identified myself as being from a state that did not exist at the time of the civil war. You'd be surprised how much bad blood still exists, I know I was. Now before you write this off as me dealing with a bunch of inbred hicks, it was city officials I was dealing with. I remember on one occasion I and another colleague arrive unannounced bright and early one morning in suits and ties along with overcoats at the building officials office. The secretary took one look at us and moaned. She asked us if we were there to sue them. ROFL!! We answered no, we were just there to visit with the chief building official if he had a bit of time. She walked back and leaned into his office to ask if he would see us and we could plainly hear her answer the "who are they question" with "couple of fancy dressed yanks I think". It was hard to keep from bursting out laughing. This was far from an isolated indecent. Perhaps things are different in Georgia or perhaps they are just different where you live in Georgia. In my travels I only passed through the peach state and never did much more than stay the night in a hotel so I don't have any real clue. While I agree that domestically it does refer to northerners, few people make a distinction between a domestic and international word meaning if you know what I mean. Now, I don't claim that any of this is fact, it was just what I found in the 20 some odd years I crisscrossed the country in the various construction job positions that I held.
