Getting a NEW computer

As far as steam, I guess I download all my stuff (games and whatever) from my steam account, the Nexus has a page that says what mods your account has downloaded, so that's cool, but does LL have anything like that?  Or am I going to need a pencil and paper to make a list of what I need to get my new rig up and running?

I just looked at my profile to see if there was a record of things I've downloaded.... looks like you need to get the pencil out - OR.......

 

Grab that sweet external HD you have and copy all the file folders to it as an archive or even a working file.

 

Example: My Sims 3 game has been moved across 3 computers. I do a new install, then copy the old files over them (after making a copy of the default). The install handles registry, etc. while the old modded game file should work just fine - of course take into account the .ini file which has your current system set up for graphics and sound if different to the point of not working.

Or just use notepad and put it all in it and save it and send it to your email and you'll have your list without the need for a pencil and paper.

Hell flash drives are to the point now that that's really all you need. I have a $25 128gb samsung flash drive that I use to back up my entire skyrim folder with about 30 gigs left over for other stuff.

I put a new mobo and cpu in recently and all I did was copy my mods folder(using MO2 mind you) and the plugin.txt and load order.txt from my profile folder to a back up hard drive I have in one of my hard drive slots, no external hard drive needed. after reinstalling everything once I got my pc back, the game and MO2, then move that mods folder back to the MO2 mods folder from your new installation, then take your plugin and load order text files and follow that to move things around in the right load order. if your mods folder isn't that big you can probably grab a small usb stick, maybe 32 gb for 10 bucks if you really don't want to write everything down. if you use NMM then this probably won't work because it puts your mods into the game's folder unlike MO2.

For LL mods and such. I create a folder from this site. Then the games I use mods from here. For example Skyrim, Skyrim SE, Fallout 4, Fallout NV, ... some Oblivion

 

then create a folder inside the master folder for the mods I use. Each mod has its own folder, notes taken if needed. I have a screen capture tool from my browser. Easy to capture the needed info and place it in there. Then the actual downloads are done and versions made (different folder for them) in case I need to go to a previous one.  At one point I had Sexlab versions (most of them) from version like .9x all the way to 1.5x . Sexout way back to version 2.4 or something like that.  Makes life much easier.  A bit of work on the front end.. loads of time saved on the back end. 

 

Even now that all my stuff is bad / old.. I have the links placed into the folders that link to the page where I got the file from. I also do the same for Nexus.  In that case it helps as many times those mods go missing more often than here. here at least the authors are often kind enough to let them go to the community to use.

Honestly, I don't have many mods downloaded from LL going, atm, but since I am going to be forced to "start anew" with the new set-up coming in December I figure it would be a good time to switch from Vanilla Modded / SE Natural to Vanilla Natural / SE Modded.  SE has a lot more ...stuff going on and the MODs seem more varied and whatever.  I can actually mod things beyond the normal aspects that in Vanilla holds me back.

 

I guess either way the whole thing is somewhat moot as I do not have the external/removable HDD or any of that.  I guess I could use google.docs to port everything like an FTP or whatever, but I almost think it might be cathartic to 'clean out' my mods list and literally start from scratch.

You can use an external drive if you want or a folder on your computer for the archive.  However, eventually you should create a separate external backup of your mods and variou8s tools and such in any case.

 

It is a good time to change things out. (Are you using MO?  If so you have the downloads already and can back that folder up and just click on and reinstall them right from  Mo without any more downloading and such.   Just move it over to the new Mo install and click yes to overwrite.  If you don't see them. Check the settings and make sure the pointer for the downloaded mods are correct to the folder you want to use.

 

Hard drives or even flash drives aren't that expensive in most areas. and you will likely need some space to keep some backups.  Backups are encouraged due to the fact that some of the mods might go missing or even if they don't. Previous versions will usually go missing. If you have some conflict with your selected mods that occur from an update from another mod, you won't easily be able to correct that by using an older version.   However, fresh downloads is also a good thing as it is more assured you have a clean, updated version that should work. Also no more messes and you have some experience with the mdos you are using and likely will be both quicker in installing them, and better in the order and the selection of choices (if provided) of options given by the author .. so it is good to just do a clean setup. It is what I mostly would be doing now after such a long time not having a mod setup on my computer. (the game isn't even installed ... or I believe it isn't.. lol haven't really even looked :P)  In any case, best of luck. Feel free to post questions and such as you need. Keep in mind to post the question on the mods support thread as well to get better coverage.

A new system will require new installs of anything you want to run on that system. Therefore you have 2 choices.....

 

1) Re-download anything you want to 'keep' using and install normally.

2) Copy files you already have and move them to the new system.

 

Above are a couple well thought out processes for achieving this.

 

So yeah, any way you want to use to either transfer files you have, or reacquire is the rub. Welcome to the wonderful world of modding. I love it.

My game drive is a separate game drive.. .. I just transfer it over to a new computer!  No rub... .. I miss the rubbing...

 

Jokes aside.. I mention this if the OP or others are creating a desktop and can get a second drive. (or use one they are already using) they might save them the troubles in the future.

I like the idea of having the extra hardware.  (heh heh: he said HARD) but I'm not as fortunate in the Cash-ola department as some.  Priorities and all that: Booze, ladies, rent, new computer, so unfortunate, yet so true.

 

I am having problems currently (mods work/don't work, CTD because why not, various random errors etc) and a WARM WELCOME TO MODDING lol but I think the full new system and clean new download of everything I want (while taking a night or 2 to accomplish) will help me with my now somewhat superior knowledge to how this all "works" to not fuck myself off the start, get everything where it is actually supposed to be, WORKING and maybe move on towards bigger, better, brighter tomorrows!

 

...with plenty of CGI sex making, and various fetishes and plenty of rubbing ?
