Hi all, I really am not sure what is causing a CTD when I enter Whiterun. To be specific, I can enter and fastravel into Whiterun and walk around. After 10 seconds or so and entering the middle of Whiterun, my game will freeze for a couple seconds then CTD immediately. I haven't messed around with many more mods since, so I'm wondering if there is a direct cause or flaw in my load order?

Thank you

I experienced a similar issue when entering the College of Winterhold.  I was going crazy trying to figure out what the issue way.  I have The Immersive College of Winterhold mod, which is a major mod and a lot of other mods that over wrote stuff so I figured something was borked between them.

Well, after probably three weeks of tear things apart, looking in CK and/or SSEdit, and not finding anything I figured out what the issue was.

I also had installed a standalone follower mod who's spawn point was in the College.  That mod was not properly converted, so when I entered the College during the right time "randomly" I'd get a CTD.

How I figured this out was, I went to Winterhold, just outside the college.   I then walked in, and right before I entered the hall of whatever it is called, I saved my game, first off...  Then I waited "T", until after 2am.   By then most npcs will hit their AI to go to bed.   I was then magically able to enter at will with no CTD.

Armed with this new knowledge, (it's not my load order, the area mod Immersive College of Winterhold, or any of the character makeover mods I overwrote that mod with...) I started looking at my mods in NMM (ya, I'm old school still).  Reading through them I located the follower mod, read the description and yup, I can find her in The College of Winterhold.    I uninstalled that mod, loaded up my save from just outside the College hall doorway, said "Y" to loading without the follower mod, and let the game load up.   I then immediately saved the game and exited.  Ran savefix on that last save, there were no scripts dangling, so exited.   Loaded back up that 'clean' save and walked right into the College Hall with no crashing.

I expect that either that bad follower mod, which was location specific regarding where the follower was found or would sandbox, was either not properly converted (meshes oldrim and not updated to SSE) or they missed some file/mesh that the .ESP was still referencing (that can happen pretty easy, since it works on the developers setup because the "missing" file is actually there, but it's not packed up with the mod archive).    I never really tore into the final root cause to pinpoint it.  I was just happy that I found the rogue mod and got rid of it, and my CTD when I entered a particular area.

In theory, your problem could be the same.  Either a mod that places a NPC in Whiterun, or it could also be an armor that is added to leveled lists so that NPCs will wear it.  If any of those have a bad or missing mesh, its instant CTD time.

Try going to the Whiterun gates outside the city, and saving there.  Then wait until after 2pm and enter to see if the CTD goes away.  (Because the npcs and specifically the Bad npc that has the mesh issue with themself of their custom clothes, is in bed.)

It might save you a lot of time tearing things apart and not getting anywhere.

I'd start by using SSEdit to look at these to see if any NPCs start out in Whiterun:

SimpleDBLykiosFollower, Sisterhood Mara, PrettyKhajit, Metalsabers Pretty Orcs of Skyrim, Imperious Races of Skyrim, SexLab TDF Aggressive Prostitution

And after that, I'd look at all the armor and clothes mods you've added.   As much as I love HothTrooper44's Immersive works, they have caused me headaches and heartaches several times over the years.  I don't run with them anymore because of it.  Mostly, on a weaker rig loaded down with lots of script heavy mods, (SexLab Creature Framework, Devious Devices, Convenient Horses to name a few...) the init scripts to add armor to leveled lists can and does screw up.  Leaving npcs naked or worse.  Sometimes, depending on the armor, id all pieces are not equipt and the body work isn't just right, that can, and does, cause CTDs too.   So no HothTrooper armors for me while running all of the same animation framework mods meantioned, even on 64 bit SSE.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Hi! Thank you for the response ^,^ I will be defiantly trying this. Funnily enough, it might be an issue with my save, tho i'm a noob so im not entirely sure on this. New saves and old ones with different characters do not have this issue in Whiterun.

I will let you know my results : )

Install Java on your computer if you don't have it already... https://www.java.com/en/

Then get Fallrimtools script cleaner and more.  (download it manually, and install it in a separate directory).

Jut apply the filters for the first two things unattached script instances and undefined elements to your latest save.  When you go to close the program it will let you save the changes, and Fallrimtools will backup the original, so if it borks things worse, you can go delete the modified save files and you still have your original ones.

When you run the tool, you'll want to open a save, navigate to the one you want and when it loads you'll get a popup telling you what it detects as unattached or undefined.   Apply the first two filters and you can click around to see what dangling script garbage is out there.    90% of the time fixing these two things restores your game save to usable status.  If you run the tool and it doesn't report anything in the unattached or undefined area, then something else is wrong.

You can use the tool to do other stuff too to your saves, like kill threads or paused stacks.  Sometimes if things are really messed up, killing all the threads will let you load the save.  Other times you are hosed at that point.

Good luck!

I think you should start one own tread instead of hijack this.

You also seems to use MO2.

You need to give us your left side in MO2.

Very well, i made a new thread here:
