Scarvoice Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 well, short explanation, when you install older games on windows 7, game explorer will try to access microsoft game update site automatically. if no internet connection present, the rundll will hang. to confirm this, try running oblivion without internet, check the task manager, you'll see rundll and dllhost in process tab. normally, it will disappear once you have internet connection. to fix this, we'll start with an easy fix (first option). you have to go to start > all programs > games > game explorer if you see a pop up, choose the second option (customize). if not, click on option tab along the top. now, in the radio button selection, select the never check for update. and uncheck the two box below it. you dont need them. if you havent run oblivion since startup, try running it now. if you have, try restarting first to reset the rundll issue. let me know if that works, if not, we're going to use the second option.

Scarvoice Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 click start. in search bar, type regedit. open regedit. alternatively you can press window + r then type in regedit. go to this directory : "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\GameUX\ServiceLocation" you will see two keys. (Default) and Games. rename the Games to BackupGames or whatever name you wish. then right click > new > string value. name it "Games" similar to previous keys before it got renamed. double click on it, in value data tab, put in any directory in your drive (such as D:\ or E:\NotPorn) any directory will do, you're creating a dummy links. save and restart. start oblivion, the rundll and "cant inject dll" should not pop up again.

I kind of figured it would come to that. I'll keep it as a last resort as this JUST started to happen. Thanks, btw.

Okay...tried this. There's an issue. Windows just re-linked the new registry folder back to https://games.metaservices.microsoft.com/games/SGamesWebService.asmx See pic... Spoiler Any suggestions?

Reveal hidden contents Any suggestions? have you moved recently? ============================ 1) Start Registry Editor 2) Go to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Local Settings \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ GameUX \ ServiceLocation] and delete the Games key value. In no case do not delete the key itself, it must be present and be empty to solve the problem

DogOnPorch Posted June 18, 2019 Author Posted June 18, 2019 One hack that works in terms of having rundll32.exe running is to go to the Resource Monitor...find Rundll32.exe...right click...choose suspend. Rundll32 will be in the process list...but it won't be sucking-up a core's worth of CPU....mine reads 0% when doing this.
Sladen2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Are you trying to start the game through Mod Organizer 1 or 2 ? It seems alot of MO users have this issue. If not, try disabling UAC and updating Direct X 9 files. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

This doesn't seem to be a directX problem. As mentioned elsewhere, Rundll32 running is associated with GameUX.dll which tries to download box art, etc for Oblivion...annoying. Actually, as a solution, suspending Rundll32 is not too bad. It can be left in the task manager as a ghost taking-up no CPU and eventually very little memory. Good until next reboot...
sunhawken Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Sometimes my antivirus software also blocks the .dll
movomo Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 This is interesting... I've never had any problem with obse dlls even when I was actively using Windows 7 years ago. Well I did have problem with certain Diablo 2 mod dll's regarding DEP, but that's really not Windows' fault. The problem had to be fixed from the modder's end (turned out that the modder was still using freaking Windows XP and was not aware of the changes in DEP). Apparently this doesn't apply to this particular situation, but my general advice is never get clever with your whatever OS' built-in security measures. Both UAC and DEP are an important part of modern Windows, play nice with them if at all possible.
DogOnPorch Posted June 19, 2019 Author Posted June 19, 2019 Windows 7 systems these days are pretty much a mix of 7 and 10...thus the fun, me thinks. Diablo II /LOD won't even run on it, anymore. Normally no complaints with this comp...until the last year or so. Older rig...but a trusty gamer computer.

D2 LOD is one of my favorite vidja gaems along with Icewind Dale and most certainly Oblivion. My soul is vacant without having those 3 games installed and playable at all times. Whether I play them all the time is a different matter altogether. And Windows 10 is/has been actually very good and getting better, especially with their recent announcement of giving up forced updates which has been the single worst thing about their Windows-As-Service bullshit (which effectively is no more at least at the consumer level). 2 hours ago, DogOnPorch said: Older rig...but a trusty gamer computer. Don't just abandon it buddy, desktop computers are built to last. Unlike those puny tablets which are basically a fancy looking brick once their pretty little warranty expires. Speaking of older rig, my fifth (by power) and first (by age) desktop has AMD AthlonXP 1900+ and ATI Radeon 9550 right back from 2002 in it and runs Windows XP, some lightweight Linux, FreeDOS and some other unpopular novelty oses. And I still play games on it... no hardware failures other than some usb ports out. This rig is very close to the minimum hardwares for playing Oblivion actually. Not that I'm willing to verify that in 2020. I have a big problem with web browsing there due to the cpu not supporting SSE2 instructions... all major browsers don't even run, and a few minors that do run tend not to render HTML5 well (if at all). Windows XP is the only OS that lets me browse modern websites. Still, I don't feel like complaining. Maybe I should try to make a post here with that computer one of these days to prove that it's alive and kicking... In fact all machines need to be used once in a while to be in an up and running state. Dang, I wish I still had my Pentium...

foreversleep Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 My computer just started doing this with all 8 cores being saturated to the point where they were on the way to overheating. I think something happened with the last Windows update as I've only just started having this problem. I'm using Win 7 since I dislike everything about Windows 10. I tried editing the Group Local Policy and it did nothing. I edited the registry as well to remove the reference to the shut down Microsoft server and it had no effect either so I deleted all the game references from GameUX in the registry and that fixed the problem. It's very nice having the CPUs in my computer no longer trying to thrash themselves to death.
movomo Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Dang, I installed Tomb Raider 6 on my win7 box and now suffering this same problem, first time in my lifetime. rudll32.exe's using up my 2 cores which is all I have and the launcher was not launching. The only thing worked was execute the game twice, and then go kill the rundll32.exe. Funny because even Diablo 2 or similarly older games didn't give me this problem before.
Sladen2019 Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 Are you guys aware that you can add your CD keys to your Blizzard account at the Blizzard website and download the games already pre patched and up to date from them ? I did that and never had any issues with Warcraft 3 or Diablo 2 or its expansions. Using really old CDs and DVDs to install really old games these days, should really be avoided unless necessary.
TDA Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 It is not clear just why Microsoft collects information about my old games, the reason for this bug is this and only this I bought the game on a disk (Oblivion), and there were no keys. At that time, there was no such thing at all, that you need to send activation keys.

Uh..... I'd say it's situational. You see these Blizzard dudes break every mod whenever they up the version number. Even the minor 'alphabet' increments break things. So you need different versions for different mods. You actually need to freaking de-patch the game. There's even a program that manages different versions like mod organizer... and iirc they even broke that program with their -relatively- recent 1.14 update (lol) And my Tomb Raider 6 is from GOG TR classic collection. I suspect that it might work just fine on my win10 boxes but it didn't on win7 machine. If GOG one doesn't work right, pretty fat chance of the Steam version working.
