Undeath Transformation CTD

I'm trying to modify Undeath, which basically allows the player to become a lich, complete with special spells and the ability to change to a lich form.

 

The problem is that the transformation power is very unstable.

Among the tweaks I had planned, I managed to make functional female models already, but the CTD problem persists.

Whenever using the transformation power, I got about 50% chance of causing a CTD

 

At first I thought it might be a script, model or race problem, so I've started deconstructing the mod to its most basic parts. I've come to use a system that does not do anything other than to change the race, and the CTDs still happen.

I also changed the target race since the mod uses a custom copy of the Dragon Priest race, I made my own copy of it, and I still get crashes.

 

Now, the ONLY way I've found to make the thing work, is to have a completeley separate mod that does the change, with Undeath.esp inactive.

The moment the mod is active on my load order, chances of CTD on SetRace increase astronomically.

Also, I tried having the mod active, and use SetRace manually by console. That doesnt seem to cause the crashes, it only happens if done by power/script.

 

I tried examining the script, but as I mentioned, I've deconstructed it to the basics and the script is not responsible.

I tried changing the race since maybe there was something corrupt with the models or specific racial tweaks, but the race is also fine.

Tried using the vanilla Dragon Priest race too, but it still crashes.

BTW, I'm designing and testing this thing on an almost mod-free setting, except for the basic big mods, like SkyUI, RaceMenu, FNIS, XPMSE etc...

I still find no logical explanation since the vanilla Vampire Lord transformation spell works as good as ever, and it also depends on a SetRace call.

According to what I've seen, the unstable nature of the thing is only related to SetRace on ANY race that uses Dragon Priest skeleton/animations WHILE Undeath is active

 

I could think it's animation-related, but as mentioned, tried a separate minimalistic mod that only does race change and it works better, even if animation mods are installed. As long as Undead.esp is not active of course.

 

All evidence so far, suggests that the problem is hidden somewhere inside Undeath mod, but at this point, I'm running out of ideas to track it.

I'm asking here because the mod's support thread looks as dead as it gets, maybe some people with more experience can help identify the problem here.

Judging from what I saw there, I'm not the only one with this issue, but no one has given an aswer or even tried to fix it apparently, it just goes largely ignored.

And yes, it's an Undeath problem. Doesnt matter if I'm using the patches and addons, or rearrange my load order or start from a new game with almost nothing installed.

BTW, to test Undeath, I'm making lots of tweaks to the scripts and that's part of a larger pack of modifications, however, for the CTDs in question nothing else is required other than my minimalistic mod and Undeath.

If Undeath is installed, my mod will get recurrent CTDs on transformation, if it's not, thansformation with my mod should go smoothly.

Some bad in your side... i put your minimalistic mod with my undead and another 239 plugings and make test in a new game ussing your transform power a lot of times in male and female whitout any problem.

I only make test in a NEW GAME and only with my nord race, i not make intensive test, but maybe you can have some problem in your base human race. When the game try recover the human form and execute TargetRef.SetRace(OriginalRace) must change a lot of things starting with the human skeleton and addiding the mesh for the body, head, hair... Maybe you are ussing a replacer that have HDT or SOS problems when make the change race, but is only a idea. Try add some Wait(1) after each transformation for give a bit of time to the game for make the change race.

 

As you can see i have undead.esp + undead2.esp plus another 239 plugings.

I posted the minimalistic version that transforms into the Dragon Priest race, and it uses the model I made for the Dragon Priest outfit.

Re-Downloaded Undeath to fix any possible corrupt setting on my end, and after that, for some reason, the 2 mods became able to coexist independently... doesnt make any sense, I know, but it is what it is. Now I could see my minimalistic test module working with no CTDs, and the Undeath one crashing.

But that's not the whole story, because the changes I'm making to Undeath, also include new female models (planned) for other outfits.

You can notice the outfit Undeath lich race uses, is not the same as the Dragon Priest's, so currently, there are 2 models of robes to wear, and 2 more because of gender variation.

So if you used Undeath directly from the page, you dont have my female variant of the armored robe, you only have my tweaks on the Dragon Priest robe for both genders

And as it was implied earlier, that seems to work relatively fine.

This theory is the result of the crashings I got after I took the next step in the mod when noticing my minimalistic dragon priest change worked without issues. I changed the race's skin to the lich armored model, and the crashes imediately returned.

 

The transformation script for the lich race chooses an outfit variant immediately after race change so maybe if I changed Undeath's target race to Dragon Priest instead of it's custom Lich race, it didn't matter since the armored robe would get equipped instantly.

I have yet to test that possibility by disabling the paragraph that swaps outfits, and only allowing the race change to occur on Undeath, while using Dragon Priest race instead of the Lich one... if that works It could prove the nif is responsible.

 

I'll also leave here, an altered version of my test module, this one changes the race to a new dragon priest copy race, that uses the lich skin instead, this one should crash, or maybe just the female model crashes I dunno... It usually CTDs on second or third try.

I'm starting to thing it's definitely the nif file.

I can't see exactly what's wrong with it yet. Minimalistic Lich transformation doesnt crash if male, but it's highly unstable if female (using female model)

It's trigly to notice since the model works in game, doesnt stretch nor does it have missing textures iirc, when it renders, it works perfectly. I't's just unstable on loading it.

Also I'm not sure how unstable it is, since every crash is always because it was added by some script/spell, Equipping the robe by console has never caused me any crash

Again, some bad in your side.

 

I remove your minimalistic mod and put your ALTER. Make some test as male and female in a NEW GAME whitout any problem testing with diferent races, nord, kajita, yatuja... none problem after 10 transformations in each race with each sex. The only way i get CTD is when i type showracemenu while i'm transformed in lich.

I testing making some bad overwrites. When i use the draug skeleton from Beast HDT 0.63, in first person is good, but i get a weird visual in 3rd person because my view is at floor level and i can not see your lich.

But with your skeleton work perfect.

 

Talking about the clothes i can not see the new clothes in game. I see it in NifScope but not in game.

Right. So I tried uninstalling everything.

And I mean everything, even SkyUI

Then started installing things one at a time until I got crashes again.

 

I don't know if this is good news or bad news, but I think I found it.

Something about Crash Fixes was causing it.

I first got CTDs on the blank test install when Crash Fixes was activated, they went away if I disabled it.

Then I tested on my fully modded install with 238 plugin files, removed Crash Fixes, and then got no CTDs on Lich transformation.

 

So I re-downloaded CrashFixes

Didn't change anything from the new version, except setting UseOSAllocators=1

 

Update:

The second I changed UseOSAllocators=1, CTDs are back.

 

EDIT2:

BTW, if you're getting invisible clothes, something went wrong, either I sent the wrong files, or you insalled them in a messed up way, but both instances of the minimalist mod are supposed to show clothes, also I think it crashes more if clothes are loaded. I'll try to pack up anothe one

 

EDIT3:

Setting AlignHeapAllocate=1 as suggested on Crash Fixes main page didn't work either.

I only get a stable game on Lich transformation if UseOSAllocators is set to 0

How to use the memory allocator patch?
1. Open CrashFixPlugin.ini and find "UseOSAllocators=0"
2. Change it to "UseOSAllocators=1"
3. Download and install SKSE Plugin Preloader
4. Start game, if you get an error saying that memory patch could not be applied read the message for help, otherwise you're good to go.
(5.) Causes game to crash and you use ENB? Set ExpandSystemMemoryX64=false in enblocal.ini
(6.) Causes game to crash more frequently (especially with UNP RaceMenu sliders)? Try AlignHeapAllocate=1 in CrashFixPlugin.ini
 

 

I don't know if it is relevant but there is currently an issue between Crash Fixes v12 and MNC v12 which is causing CTDs.

Of course, i have Crash Fixes 12 Beta 4, that is the last version, with OsAlocators = 1 and none problem.

Time ago i had some extrange problems caused by the dll from SKSE Pluging Preloader, i not know why but my dll d3dx9_42.dll are not correct. Revise you have exactly the dll from SKSE Pluging Preloader in the same folder you have TesV.exe

 

Maybe, your problem can be HDT. I have some problems with HDT and OsAlocators = 1, not CTD but weird problems with chains, and i solve it with HDT MemPatch from this post. I must give thanks again to 27X for the detailed explanation.

Fuck... I was afraid you were gonna said that.

 

I redownloaded Crash Fixes, latest version, same 12.B-4

Preloader, is exactly where it belongs, game folder, next to the enb dll. Can redownload that as well, but I'm not liking my odds here.

And like I said, HDT is off in testing environment.

This is all that was needed to get the unstable change. There are no more mods.

 

By the looks of it, if yours doesnt crash, then it must be the ghosts in my PC

Also tried on a different PC btw, same results.

The only thing left for me after this point is a complete game reinstall which honestly, I dont think will work either since after the day I changed to mod Organizer, game folder doesnt get many changes really,

 

This is unfixable isn't it?

Dammit.

 

I guess my only best option here is to try to live in a game without UseOSAllocators =1, since the rest of Crash Fixes is still installed.

Because you can install it like any other mod with MO.

No, that aint the case...

The other mods are harmless.

Crash presents itself with SetRace to lich, using my custom models and Crash Fixes with OSAllocators

On that picture setting, I get the crash using my own test mod, which I repeat, is standalone.

Undeath is not even part of the equation here, I could remove all 3 Undeath mods, and the crash would still happen using mine and Crash Fixes. Actually tested it that way too.

Besides, those other 2 mods, don't even mess with the transformation mostly. Not in any dangerous way anyway.

 

Also, so much for trying life with no OSAllocators...

First try and I didn't last 3 minutes without a critical freeze location that happened every time at 3 seconds of a loaded save.

Guess I'm stuck with the crashes... everytime I use lich power is a lottery of 50% chance, but at least it works half the time.

Been trying to find a workaround for the same crash issue myself.  The crash seems to mainly happen with Undeath Classical Lichdom installed.  I have 3 versions of UCL - 5.2, 6.1 & 6.66.  The crashes happened on each version I tried.  I attached everything I have here, but if this violates any rules just let me know and I can take it down.  Maybe more options can help you puzzle this out.  UCL Patch for Ordinator v. 4.0 & 6.0, and UCL Patch for Health Drain bug.
