worik Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 "Old" is not necessarily "bad". I don't . But I don't have that beast of a gfx card. My suggestion: Better keep it on the list for later, if in doubt.

Only 2.5 GB of my card is being used even with ENBoost, which is the same as without ENBoost. Any other suggestions?
worik Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Somehow your gfx card would be next on my list. ? Just to make sure that all settings are suited for Skyrim. Im not much into that but I remember there was some guidance by the manufacturer to get that setup.

After that, I will try all the possible Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPref.ini tweaks to get the best out of my Skyrim and will post the results. Only problem is that my graphic card isn't getting used to it's full extent. Everything else seems fine, no CTDs or anything. Correct me if I am wrong, if I was using Skyrim SE, I would not be running into this problem right? 64 - bit Skyrim would be able to directly acquire all the resources from my graphic card, right?

I am new to Nvidia as well, got the 1060 just 4 days ago. I was using an AMD 7850 prior to the 1060 and it was being used to it's full extent, giving me the same FPS as the 1060. So I should at least expect that the 1060 would perform better. Even RealVision has decreased the number of recommended mods greatly so FPS should be even better, but I am not able to get the most out of my graphics card. If I am able to figure this out with some help from others, I am even considering making a video guide to help people get the most out of their graphics card for Skyrim.

The CPU usage doesn't even reach 50%, it's usually around 40% and neither is it throttling as temperature doesn't go above 50°C (replaced the thermal paste 1 week ago) So the CPU is not an issue. It's more about Skyrim not using more resources to run at 60 FPS. I get 60 FPS indoors. I get 60 FPS when I look at the sky or at the ground. I get 60 FPS when I go close to a wall and look at it. I am not at home for the next two days but pretty sure ASLAL character creation save will give me 60 FPS. But if I look at the environment, I drop down to 30 to 40. My problem being when I am down to 30 to 40, I would like Skyrim to use more of my CPU or GPU to give better performance which are not being used more than 70%. VRAM usage never goes above 2.5 GB (It's Nvidia's 1060 6 GB variant). Considering my description, do you think it's an INI problem? Thank you for Bethini, I was unaware of such a mod. I will surely give it a try after getting home in two days.

If you have 60 fps when look the sky or the ground but not when look trees and mountains i think can be a problem in LOD = level of detail. Not worry about how many usage have the video card. Look how many FPS you have. Each game have diferent requeriments and have diferent ussage or resources, but MUST have a decent FPS. A playable framerate is 50-60 for me. For others players are 30-40 while others are happy with fixed 30 FPS. That depend of your machine and depend about HOW you want see the game. First try BethIni and look if you get 60 FPS. If not, try disable ENB, maybe is bad configured. If problem persist, disable ALL yours mods and make a try in VANILLA Skyrim. If you not get 60 FPS in VANILLA Skyrim try others games. Can be a problem in drivers. In last, i thinking now in how many power have your PSU. A GTX 1060 need 120W. If your PSU only have 500W maybe you are short of power and the graphics card can not get max performance. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator Only with your AMD fx-8350 and gtx 1060 you need 350w and recomend 400. If you have 500w you can be short. Put the configuration of your complete machine and look yourself how many W you need. But if your PSU have more than 5 years can not give you all the original power. All the PSU's lost power and stability after 5/7 years.

Graphic card's usage reduced but dunno why that reduced usage was used for getting 60 FPS. So I am more inclined that it might be an LOD issue as you said. Completely unmodded Skyrim gives me 60 FPS everywhere. Even Overwatch on full Ultra settings gives me 60 to 70 FPS. Never below 60. I will give BethINI a shot and post back the results in two days. Hmmmm. The power supply thing didn't cross my mind. I indeed am using a 500 Watt power supply and it is 6 years old so wattage must have dwindled down. Luckily, I have a 850 Watt power supply lying around. It probably won't fit in my case but I can keep it outside for a while to test Skyrim, if it will help the GTX 1060 run at full power and to know if it's actually running at full power on my 500 Watt supply. Everyone, I thank you all for your suggestions. Once I get to know the root cause I will surely make a video and post it. For now, I will put myself on hold while I get back home in two days.

For discard a problem in INI files use BethIni, but i thinking in a problem in load order or a bad mod in ilumination or climatology. Maybe you are addiding excesive mods for a fx-8350 + gtx 1060. You have Flora Overhaul + Verdant + Realistic Water + Enhanced Trees + RLO + SDO Full-LOD + Climates... That is a LOT of things and you must configure it CORRECTLY with the coresponding compatibility patch in the CORRECT order for make it works. A fail in the order or in any compatibility patch can give you that problems. I only have a simple gtx 660 2gb and I can NOT use SFO or Verdant or pure waters. If i install it my game give me below 30 fps. Normally i ALWAYS have near 60% of CPU/GPU usage in my game for get 50-60 FPS but in some cities my FPS low to 40-30 and my CPU/GPU usage IS THE SAME. Skyrim is not good optimized, is a game from 2011 and only can use 4 cores and directx 9. For that the game not scale good when you change the video card. The Multi-Threaded Rendering in directx 9 is very limited. The big change in directx 10 is ilumination and the big change in directx 11 is Multi-Threaded Rendering. Probably you can not get 100% video card ussage with a directx 9 game. You only can get a decent framerate. The problem are not in the components of the computer, are in the technology used by the game. Read the complete description from microsoft: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/direct3d11/overviews-direct3d-11-render-multi-thread-differences Spoiler Differences between Direct3D 11, 10 and 9:Direct3D 11 defaults to mostly thread-safe and continues to allow applications to opt-out using D3D11_CREATE_DEVICE_SINGLETHREADED. If applications opt-out of being thread-safe, they must adhere to threading rules. The runtime synchronizes threads on behalf of the application allowing concurrent threads to run. In fact, the synchronization in Direct3D 11 is more efficient than using the thread-safe layer in Direct3D 10.Direct3D 10 can support the execution of only one thread at a time. Direct3D 10 is fully thread safe and allows an application to opt-out of that behavior by using D3D10_CREATE_DEVICE_SINGLE_THREADED. Direct3D 9 does not default to thread safe. However, when you call CreateDevice or CreateDeviceEx to create a device, you can specify the D3DCREATE_MULTITHREADED flag to make the Direct3D 9 API thread safe. This causes significant synchronization overhead. Therefore, making the Direct3D 9 API thread safe is not recommended because performance can be degraded.

Unmodded Skyrim gives me 50 to 60 FPS, especially when looking at the mountains so this really seems like a case of bad configuration. But the weird part is that the AMD Radeon™ HD 7850 used to give me 60 FPS everywhere on an unmodded Skyrim, even when looking at mountains. Maybe it's an compatibility issue with a new card and rest of the old hardware? Other games easily give me 60 FPS on max settings so it could also be a driver issue as the game is old and the drivers are configured for newer games. I am running Nvidia Driver version 417.71 which is the latest as of making this post. I looked into your power supply suggestion but my card is running at 93.51 Watts (it's a 120 Watt card) when running Skyrim (at 69% usage) so I don't think there's an issue there. Read the complete description from microsoft: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/direct3d11/overviews-direct3d-11-render-multi-thread-differences Reveal hidden contents Differences between Direct3D 11, 10 and 9:Direct3D 11 defaults to mostly thread-safe and continues to allow applications to opt-out using D3D11_CREATE_DEVICE_SINGLETHREADED. Your suggestion is currently the one I am excessively looking into. I used BethINI for 15 minutes but now that I have a good grasp of everything, I am trying to manually edit all the INI files. I removed the excessive mods such as Flora Overhaul, Verdant, RLO, SDO Full-LOD and there was no change in result. But the final case might be true to what you are saying. Maybe a FX-8350, GTX 1060 and Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 are just not enough for Skyrim to handle, I might just have to live with under 60 FPS outdoors.
lambient1988 Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 Okay, this is really weird. Doesn't matter what I do, looking at mountains and cliffs gives me 30 - 40 FPS. Both on modded and unmodded Skyrim. Or ENB or no ENB. I just changed my View Distance of Skyrim to maximum and there was absolutely no change in the FPS. I am getting 60 FPS, except, when I look at mountains and cliffs. What is going on? Why is this happening? I have been trying trial and error since the last 10 hours and am out of my wits now. All I want, is a reason, why I am getting 40 FPS when I look at mountains and cliff even when I am disable and all any mods to modify my mountains and cliffs. Please help. I am dying out there.

As i said, the game is not good optimized and some locations have greater graphical charge. Do not obsess about the frame rate. Look if you have a PLAYABLE frame rate. You can NOT use ONLY a location for test your game. For example, Riverwood is a zone with heavy charge and some cities like Whiterun, Solitude, Riften... have heavy graphical charge. Look some of my screenshoots make today, look my CPU/GPU ussage in my i5-4460 + gtx 660 2g, the max is 66% in whiterun and remember, i use ENB in BOOST mode and NOT have pure waters or verdant, that is only URWL + ELFX + Imaginator: Spoiler In Riverwood: ------------------------------------------------------ Whiterun exterior near inn meadwey: ------------------------------------------------------ Falkrear near the tower : The LOD can change HOW you see the environment but is not ALL. My next screenshots are made changing my graphical configuration with BethIni to POOR. I can have better framerate in Riverwood but i not have 60 fps constant. Spoiler If I move a bit the camera i get lower framerate. I think is a problem in the game because only can use on thread for get mesh and textures and another thread for transfer it to the video card. If you have a very better machine, like i7-7700K or i9-9900K plus a GTX-1080 you can get better performance because the CPU have much more power and the videocard can accept it much more fast. That can give better framerate but, of course, LOWER cpu/gpu ussage. Learn a bit about HOW the image is rendered. The game make a lot of DrawCalls to the DirectX api for compose the image inside the video card and when the image is ready in the video card the game give the order to show the image. If the game can not send enougth DrawCalls to the video card for saturate it, the GPU ussage is low and, of course, the framerate can be low because the game, using ONLY ONE THREAD IN THE CPU, is not enougth fast for get 60 fps constant. With MY machine, i5-4460 + GTX 660, or with YOUR machine, FX-8350 + GTX 1060, probably WE can not get 60 fps constant and stable. My normal CPU/GPU ussage when play Skyrim are near 60% and is very strange for me have it over 70% and i NEVER see 90% while play Skyrim. Our machines, using ONLY ONE THREAD, are not enougth fast for saturate the GPU and have 60 fps constant. Is a problem related to game technology and computer power. You can try SSE, is a 64 bits game and use directx 11. Sure you get greater GPU ussage and better framerate.

A 1060's single thread performance is not good enough to give Skyrim 60 FPS at all locations. Indoors, yes. But outdoor, very unlikely. On a side note, I did install Skyrim Special Edition and installed Nyclix's ENB-Reshade which is based of RealVision so I could get similar results for testing. As it turns out, Special Edition does not manage to give me 60 FPS either. But it does make me wonder how YouTubers like MxR Mods manage to get a solid 60 FPS in their videos even outdoors. Is the GTX 1080's single thread performance so good that it can blow up an optimized game to 60 FPS?

Skyrim Special Edition is a 64 bits game and use DirectX 11 and is not limited to one thrender and for that MUST request all the power from your computer. Revise the configuration and take a look to some post about framedrops in SSE. Seems has been caused by the Vsync in game, disable it and try again. A new computer always is good, have more power and less problems, but of of course, is money. If you have it you always can change the machine. I not have it and probably go to make the same as you, buy ONLY a new video card.

Getting 60 FPS every where except that one mountain I am looking at in the screenshot. I too do not have money for a new computer and obviously, it's of no use either cause Skyrim will not give 60 FPS in most cases cause of DirectX 9 limitations. Thank you for all your help, it has been a fun little experience.
