Upgraded to Windows 10 and..bad things...[SOLVED]

So I recently got a new harddrive and installed Windows 10 since I figured it's high time I move on to the most updated OS.

BOY WAS I IN FOR A SURPRISE.

Most all of my games and programs survived the transition nearly perfectly, needing no faffing about. But Skyrim had other plans.

Basically, all other errors and missing files aside, I've reached a point where this happens:

When I run Skyrim SKSE with ENB on fullscreen: error occurs saying failure to initialize renderer.

When I run Skyrim SKSE with ENB on windowed: It reaches the main menu but CTDs before the options appear.

When I run Skyrim SKSE without ENB: shit's fine but everything's ugly, of course.

So basically I've narrowed the issue down to ENB causing the crash, but whatever fix I tried so far hasn't done anything.

Things I've tried:

1) Locking the videomemory in enblocal.ini to 4064

2) Setting expandsystemmemoryx64 to false in enblocal.ini

3) Reinstalling the June 2010 DirectX thing

4) Running Skyrim with ENB with and without SKSE.

So far, nothing..

I'm really sad about this right now and not being able to fix this is making me anxious as hell for some reason.

Skyrim is my favorite game and all my characters are really precious to me, being with me for 5+ years now.

Right now, if I actually want to run Skyrim with all I got I need to boot my PC up on the harddrive with Windows 7 and play/take screenshots from there.

The reason I'm pretty anxious about it because my current cpu doesn't support windows 7 going forward, so there will be no security updates for it, and more annoyingly the error window that pops up that keeps reminding me of this.

Anyone have any advice to help me solve this? ?

EDIT: SOLVED!

For anyone's future reference: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3089504-fix-for-skyrim-crashing-instantly-with-enb-on-windows-10/page-14#entry56131491

What fixed it for me personally was deleting dxdgi.dll!

Also for reference's sake, after this I encountered a new issue where body textures broke if a female's weight was above 0.2. What fixed it for me was copying over

X:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Local\Skyrim from Win7 to

X:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Local\Skyrim of Win10

Not sure if any of this will help you but I had similar sounding issues not too long ago (the failure to initialise renderer message).

A temporary fix for me was opening the device manager and then under display adapters, right clicking on my display adaptor and selecting disable, then afterwards enabling it.

What seemed to fix the issue permanently (for me at least) was following the steps in the following link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker

Hope you find the cause of the issue.

Whenever I hear problems with Win 10 I always turn off Cortana with this:

Otherwise I didn't really read this, but from skimming this it looks like a problem with ENB...I'll try again later

I had similar problems and used the same guide that GenioMaestro posted and it worked well for me. Give it a try (it looks harder than it is)!

If the guide referred to above (that worked for me) is to be believed the problem has nothing to do with Cortana.

Will give this a try when I am able, thank you!!

Two things though:

  • Get the Windows Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 through Windows Update. It fixes the 4GB VRAM limit. Get it even if you don't have a 4GB+ video card.

At this point in time, Windows 10 should already have this fix installed from the get-go right?

I don't have a touch keyboard icon on my taskbar, do I still need to disable this?

I not have Win10.. i have Win7 because not like 8 and 10 have some problems, as you can see...

I only try help and give you my best answer but i can't be totally sure because i can't test it.

As i know, the limit of 4gb in dx9 for win10 has been solved time ago and distributed with windows update.

If you have a video card with 4gb or more of VRam you can try VRamSizeTest  and look the result.

YES.. OF COURSE..

That icon only appear in laptop with touch pad but ALL win10 machines have the program and the service. As you not have touch pad, is recomended disable it because you never need it.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I didn't need to do either of those to get ENBoost to work.

Edit: I did have to do everything else listed.

I wish I could bearhug you right now, deleting dxdgi.dll fixed it! I am so happy! Thank you!

But..now I have a weird new problem. The body textures(cbbe) on Nords, Orcs, Bretons and Redguards of some NPCs and some of my characters seem to have this weird missing texture now. They're all purple. Any idea what caused this? I haven't changed anything in the Data folder since installing Windows 10.

Edit: Did some showracemenu in-game and it seems the texture goes missing when the character's body weight is larger than 0.2...This is very strange..

That can be a problem in the ENB configuration. Make a simple test.

Disable enb, simply rename the d3d9.dll to d3d9_ENB.dll, for example, and start your game.

If the problem persist is caused by a bad installation of the body model.

If the problem disappear is a bad configuration in ENB.

Try the Boost mode for determine if the fail come from enblocal.ini or enbseries.ini

Just did a test, it's not the enb as the problem reoccurs the same way with it off.

If the character's body weight is above 0.2, the texture breaks.

I tried reinstalling the body mod and the associated textures, but the issue still happens.(By reinstall I just unzipped the mod file and threw in and overrided the old files, should I manually delete the old files and freshly put them in?)

I also recently had to reset the game path for bodyslide as it still had the path set as what windows 7 saw my install directory (:C) while on windows 10 that same drive is called :G.

I didn't build the bodies however, should I do that?

edit: Tried rebuilding on the armor one of my characters had on, but nothing changed. Purple body still happens above 0.2 weight.

Another strange problem... the texture file is the same for all weigth, only the mesh change, the game have a femalebody_0.nif and a femalebody_1.nif for the diferent weigth but only have ONE femalebody_1.dds for the texture.

Your problem must be caused because the femalebody_0.nif make a GOOD reference to the correct texture while your femalebody_1.nif have a BAD reference to the texture. And that must be solved reinstalling the body model, and i say body model, not texture. You must reinstall CBBE or UNP, the mod the have the mesh for the body.

So I went in and deleted the femalebody_1.nif in my Skyrim, got a new femalebody_1.nif from the original mod zip file, and put it in.

The problem still happens! Purple missing texture above 0.2 weight..

This issue also does not occur if I boot my pc into Windows 7 and run Skyrim from there, it only happens when I boot into Windows 10 and run Skyrim from here.. :(

WOW.. this is a REAL strange problem... I asume you launch the same game from the same executable, true?

Then, must be a problem in user rigths. Try launch the game as Admin in Win10.

Click over the executable with left mouse button and select Run as Administrator.

Just booted back to Win7 to confirm if the issue is genuinely related to Win10 and thankfully I was right.

I will give the user rights a test tomorrow when I am able(it is 3am now and I have work tomorrow).

Thank you so much for the help so far! I hope I can continue to seek your assistance when I check the user rights tomorrow!

Ok so update. Tried running SKSE as admin on Win10 and sadly, the problem is still there.. ?

Another odd thing I neglected to mention earlier so as to not overbloat on information was that when I load into my saves on Win10 Skyrim gives me this warning saying certain save objects are no longer present (the kind that pops up if you disabled a mod midway through a save) BUT no such warning happens if I run Skyrim on Win7. I haven't disabled any mods since installing Win10 and only literally just reinstalled Steam, had it detect my Skyrim install that was already there, and copy over my saves, Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini.

I hope that extra info helps, my fingers are crossed so hard that a solution is possible.. ?

I assume that you did everything listed in the list that GenioMaestro wrote earlier:

https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3089504-fix-for-skyrim-crashing-instantly-with-enb-on-windows-10/page-14#entry56131491

Did you try the final thing listed? Did you turn off your antivirus/firewall long enough to see if it was the cause of your problem? Something is excluding your mods when you switch to Win10, might want to start there.

That info is very ussefull.. the problem is located in the configuration files and we need know what manager are you ussing... NMM.. MO1... MO2.. another???

The game have some configuration files in some locations and maybe you are fault of one.

When use NMM, the Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files are in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim

But the game have others configuration files, exactly the loadorder.txt and plugins.txt are located in

X:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Local\Skyrim

If you are ussing MO the configuration is diferent and is based in the profile inside MO.

Open MO and take a look to the configuration of the game inside MO.

I am using NMM, and so far have already copied over Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini from my documents.

So do I now copy over loadorder.txt and plugins.txt from my Win7 :C drive into my Win10 :C drive?

Is there anything else I should do?

Edit: I should add that I only used NMM to install XMPSE, Bodyslide and Ultrasight Skins(for males). Everything else is manually installed.

IT WORKED. HOLY SHIT IT WORKS. I COULD KISS YOU RIGHT NOW I AM SO HAPPY!

Thank you! So much, omg. I would've never thought there was something I forgot to move over in AppData of all things!

But I'm curious, why does forgetting to bring over the loadorder.txt and other stuff(I copy pasted everything over) result in a broken link to a texture?

Is it because XMPSE was installed using NMM?

Of course.. that file are related to the USER.. The user in Win10 is diferent to the user in Win7 and you must copy some files manually...

Exactly, for NMM and Skyrim you MUST copy the files located in

X:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Local\Skyrim from Win7 to

X:\Users\(user_name)\AppData\Local\Skyrim of Win10

The rest of the files are in their own folders inside the game... Theorically, only need that files...

Im not sure, but i think NMM not have files inside appdata.

Of course, others games and programs have it and maybe you can need copy it for others games and programs, but make it ONE by ONE and ONLY when really need it.

Is dangerous transfer manually appdata config because some times is OS dependant.

When you install a simple mod with only one ESP the manager simply add a line to the loadorder.txt

When the game start read the mod list from the loadorder.txt file.

If the file not exist or not have the mod, the game not load it.

For that, when you load your save say that you not have the mod's, because the mod installed are in that file.

XPMSE have none to make with textures, is only skeleton.

Why lost only the texture??? I not know, probably lost more thing but must play a bit for see it.

If you open the game, look a bad texture and close it, can't know what more are faulting.

Well every other game I have installed so far hasn't needed any extra work after simply detecting my steam library and maybe reinstalling their appropriate microsoft redistributable.

Regardless, you are a lifesaver. Thank you so much!

You have no idea the anxiety I had for the past 3 days trying to figure things out, and probably saved me many days more of anxiety. Thank you!!
