I am close to making a proper companion instruction video, one that will show that it's actually quite easy to create a custom companion that has more than the vanilla ones offer. So keep an eye out for that as it might be a far better option. (And with the right content there are multiple voice actors available that would be willing to help, I'm sure!)...

THIS IS FANTASTIC ??

Development Update

I've nearly finished writing a 20 page 'book', which is meant as an introductory reading before playing with Ivy. It used to be, in the beginning of time when I started playing computer games, that games would be released with actual BOOKS, often anywhere between 20-80 pages long, containing deep and intricate backstories. I have done something similar for Ivy, and am now finishing the final touches on a small book called "King Pelican - A story about a girl"

Just for the FUCK of it, I am sharing the first three chapters with you all.

Quote

Chapter 1: King Pelican.
The hands felt warm and comforting as they pressed the blanket around her body. Her voice soothed and always inspired a great sense of awe within Deborah, as she listened to her mother's stories. None of them came from children's books or comics. None of that existed any more now, so during bed time, when it was time for Deborah to sleep, often Jack would to stay up later, her mother would tell her stories about the animal kingdom and all the animals that existed before the war.

"And the little rat didn't know what to do!", her mother said.
"It was stuck in the tree!", Jack chimed in having pushed himself onto the bed, at Deb's feet.
She looked at them both in awe.

"But won't his friends help him? The birds?", she almost panicked.
"They were still fighting the bears!", her mother said, feeding Deb's awe and immersion.
"And then?", Jack asked.
"The fire kept rising and rising, higher and higher, and the little rat was forced to keep climbing up and up.. until.. there was no more tree to climb, for he had reached the top!".
"Oh no!", Deborah said.
"And the fire was becoming so hot now!", Jack said.
Deb's mom slapped him gently on the wrist, whispering: 'Don't scare her'..
"What happened then, mommy?", Deborah asked.
"The poor little rat couldn't hold on any longer! His little paws lacked the strength and he had no wings to fly with."
"Oh no!", Deborah said again.

"And he let go of the tree and started falling down. The flames were all around him now and he was sure that he would die!", she almost whispered now, as she told the story to her children, the story that Jack already knew but had always loved when she told it to him.
"And just when all hope was lost.. he suddenly felt that he was lifted up.. up up! High into the sky.", she pointed up, forcing Deborah to follow her arm and look at the ceiling.
"He came!", Deborah shouted!
"Yes he came to save him!", her mother said.
"I'm sorry I am so late, we had to lead the bears to the honey traps, before we could come to you, the pelican said. But the little rat didn't mind at all. He was just happy that his Pelican friend had kept his word. And when the little rat looked back, he saw how his pelican friends were already putting out the fire, by carrying water with their beaks from the lake.
The end!".
"And they put out all the fire, right?", Deborah asked.
"Yes. All the fire! And everything grew back really quickly.. just the way it was!", her mother answered.
"And now.. it's time for bed!"

"Oh mom.. please? Just one more story? Tell us about the bunnies again, OK? And the wailing widow!"

Chapter 2: Rosa
"Why do you have a German accent?", Rosa looked at the young man with a feeling that could best be described as a mix between disgust and fascination. The man, who was barely a year older than herself, looked almost 20 years older than her and the word awkward would be a friendly way to describe him. His German parents had always kept him apart from the other people in the Institute. That whole family had been invaders to begin with. Communists? Here? Why had they been tolerated?

But.. Rosa's mother had explained it to her one morning..
"The value of the technologies introduced by the Stein family cannot be overstated."
What did that even mean?
But when she had asked nobody wanted to answer.

The way that he had been looking at her the past few days during college, which is where the disgusting part of her mixed feelings came from, had warranted a definite response in the form of ridicule--and absolute rejection--in the form of a dialogue that was to be established which would consist of banter and then outright confrontation.
Or so had been her plan.

She had approached the somewhat greasy looking young man, that had been for years in her class, but she had never really noticed until now and felt that she had used the right tone and inflection to project scorn and dislike for his person.
"Is that an attempt at venomous humor, designed to reject me sexually?", Ruben asked it flat-out, his oily hair combed to the side.
"Indeed it is", Rosa said and she heard that her voice had somehow become disarmed between the beginning and ending of that sentence.
"Then why are you smiling?", Ruben asked.
"I'm not..", Rosa smiled.
"I'm Ruben", he extended his hand to her.
"I'm.."
"Rosa McDowell. 20 year old daughter of Ellie and Peter McDowell. Specialized in Robotics and Neuroscience.", Ruben finished her sentence.
"How do you.."
"I'm very observant", he let go of her hand.

"You are Ruben Stein, son of Gunther and Clarissa Stein. Born in post war Germany inside a Vault, then somehow ended up here.. at the Institute.. How does that happen?", she asked.
"My parents came up with it.. Teleportation. It was their idea that gave the breakthrough. The price? A one way trip using a long range transport.. It took nearly all of the Institute's power to make it happen. But look where we are now..", Ruben said.
"Neurosurgeon in training. Robotics expert. 4 Science! degrees. You're a regular Einstein, pun intended.", she said.
"So you do know about me", Ruben said.
"I looked you up, because you were freaking me out with your stalking.", she said.
"And now? Am I still freaking you out?", Ruben asked.
"Your accent is.. and your hair. You need to do something with that.. But I guess you're alright."
"I just need to know.. are you guys communists or not?", she smiled, teasingly.
"As red as red can be", Ruben said.
And Rosa didn't know if he was being serious, or not.

Chapter 3: Daisy Ripper
"He has it bad.. hoss", Rick Dangerous looked at Daisy Ripper. She was second in command, in a group of mercenaries led by a man called Kellog. The group was a mixed bag, raiders, loners, survivors and mercenaries from Rivet City, some from Vegas and other major settlements across the remnants of the US.
Kellog himself, a complete unknown to the entire team, except for Daisy.

"What's up?", she was never really that impressed by Rick's panicking, but he had a talent for stealing and picking locks that was unmatched in the wasteland.
"He's pissed somethin' fierce m'am!", Rick said as he bowed.
"Stop bowing you blubbering idiot, just tell me what's going on."
"A big job! He sayin' he needs ya now... And we gon' blow it otherwise."
"Alright", Daisy said as she picked her custom built ripper and hooked it up to her belt, "Let's see what needs killing today.."

Kellog had been quite convincing in his speech. It was clear they were going after some bad people. So she had not shown remorse.. why would she? As she ripped the head off her victim, it popped with a disgusting noise, then rolled onto the floor. Daisy followed it until she saw it land at the feet of a young boy, no older than 4, behind him his 3 younger sisters.
When she looked at the children and realized it had been a setup all along, a ruse to kill the wrong man, leaving a family fatherless, Daisy let the ripper fell onto the floor.

"Don't look at that, kids! It's alright. Here.. HERE! Look at me, into my eyes.. No don't cry.. it's gonna be OK. Where's your mommy? Eh?", she tried to console the kids and led them outside as she heard the little boy say that they had no mother and they were alone now.

I have been purposefully vague on answering this, because the answer is basically one HUGE spoiler

I suspected as much, and i appreciate you caring, so thank you. And sorry for being maybe a bit too obnoxious.

The following two spoiler tags CONTAIN THIS MAJOR spoiler (in fact, SEVERAL major spoilers) so it is suggested that you only look if you are not the type of person to be bothered by being spoiled.

Precisely why I hide what I mentioned, and left the rest up to you, cause I knew it'd be some fairly major spoilers [I'll find it out eventually, from Ivy... One of these saves... :P]

Also that Pelican shit's weird.
I know it's metaphorical to some degree.
Still think it's weird. That said, it's Ivy. It fits. :P

Perhaps... you will have a chance to ask him yourself what he's about, at one point? ?

Now this is cool!!!     Yeah, I remember the books; sometimes they were better than the games themselves. he, he Or perhaps I should say, I enjoyed some of them more than the games. Looking forward to your offering, Chic - I'm sure it will be a fun read.

Did some more testing, found some minor dialogue bugs here and there which I put on the buglist (e.g. Ivy saying 'so this is vault 81? while you're in vault 75'). Finished the 1st draft of the book, which now consists of 10 short chapters. Received some feedback from Chic as well as she's preparing for recording. Also finished the NX-1C maid bot to 100% finished state. Making RR basement ready for its stand-alone release.

Trying to figure out why Ivy sometimes switches weapons while she really shouldn't be doing that.. looks like she really might actually be forming her own intelligence.. ?

LOL I've Noticed this from day one. I just figured she loves and misses her Revolver. As always I tend to just let her be herself. "Don't want the Heavily modded/upgraded Assault Rilfe Babe? That's fine Stick with the Hand Cannon."

A question: after the FO4 update, all her voices became silent (it works before, same file, same load order)

Is that a known problem or it is something wrong on my side? If so, any recommendation to fix it?

There are no known issues with Ivy after the latest update as far as I know. Looks like something unique on your end.

Perhaps just re-install the sound files/mod and see if that fixes it.

Still testing and playing.. spending entirely waaaayy too much time with Ivy in the basement. I'm nearly at the point where I have enough bugs (and/or minor features I still need to add) to warrant a new round of development/debugging.

Just a side rant..

Am *this* close to buying an Alienware gaming computer to be done with my performance issues in high/ultra settings.. the fact that they have ON-SITE technical support really adds to making me want to save up and invest into this. It'll take me a while to get the money together and I might need to sell some other stuff. But I think the time I spend gaming (and devving) might warrant this investment. At least I'll be able to finally crank my games up to 4K so I can make use of my monitor (finally).

In 1080p I can turn most stuff to high/ultra but once I turn on anti-aliasing.. boom.. framedrop to 10-20 fps max..

Just listening to Ivy's stories..

I LOVE MUSEUMS INSIDE GAMES.

I don't know why. It started with BLOOD's museum level. The weird part is, I'm not that into museums at all in real life, but virtual ones? I love 'm!

So I started work on finishing the Museum of Pornography. Chic Geek has already voiced this add-on, but it will also available in the robot voice for those that need it. Chic did a HUGE job on voicing these and the end result is awesome.

- In workshop mode: Players get activators they can place (in sequence) in their own structures

- In workshop mode: Players will get exhibits (paintings) depicting what Ivy is talking about.

- The activators will have 'idle' markers around them, causing settlers to stand and look at them (they will not use the activators so as to not disturb players while they are taking the tour).

- The activators give a small bit of happiness each.

- There are 16 activators and 14 exhibits in total, making for around 120 lines of dialogue.

- All history has been RESEARCHED and can be verified by googling, most information was from Wiki pages and will be sourced properly upon release.

- Some of the history has been 'altered' to fit the Fallout Universe timeline. (E.g. VHS tapes are now HoloTapes, etc..)

I'm still working on the paintings so those aren't shown in the video, it's just a bunch of vintage paintings for effect.

This add-on will be made available together with Ivy's base release (somewhere in October).

I noticed that the museum is located at abernathy farm will it conflict with simsettlement?

It is not a map change. The add-on just adds things in the workshop that you can place in any settlement you want. It's up to the players to choose a settlement where they want to make a museum, make their own structure, then place the activators and paintings where they want.

I've been struggling with the museum add-on. I had initially created the activators as speakers, playing a sound file. But when you press the buttons multiple times, it plays the sound multiple times (at the same time). So I've been working on changing them into talking activators.. but that introduced a whole bunch of work. I suddenly need scripting.. a manager quest to check which activators are active.. 17 different voice types and actors.. or some kind of way to distinguish between them via script.. all in all what turned out to be a quick change started to become this monster that I need to tackle in order for it to work perfectly.

Today (after I return from my job) will be spent on figuring out the most efficient way of setting this up.

I was wondering if Binaural 3D Surround Sound for Headphones - HRTF

would interfere Ivy's voice tracks - for this version or the new version

I need to use headphones for my neighbors would not understand Ivy ;)

Ivy uses a single mono track for all voice files, like all other companions. Because of this it is positional audio, just like all other NPC's have.

Are you wanting VAs? Besides myself, I know at least 2 others. One female had her work hours cut during the summer months and is looking to keep herself busy.

Yes. I'm in desperate need for VA's. I need an older gruffy sounding male voice for Doctor Stein, preferably with a (weak) german accent.

And I need a woman (with a southern or texas or New Jersey) accent to play the NX-1C Maid bot (but @ChicGeek has dibs on that if she wants it, I'm awaiting a response on that) the maid bot is a smaller VA role with only 350 lines of dialogue. Stein has around 250 in total but is a much more important character (holotape recordings).

In the future (e.g. 4-6 months from now) I will need someone to help voice one of the female customers of Ivy.

Commenting on several posts on this particular page of the thread:

Reg:

I noticed in one screen shot that it says "Ivy likes visiting this place" in the upper left-hand corner.  Is that an affinity gain now (and I missed the post explaining that)?

System:  If you don't want to deal with building a system, the Alienware machines are really nice, and having tech support is wonderful.  We ended up using them for our photo editors at my company, as they were actually better suited for it than purpose-built photo editing systems, and the price was actually better.

I'm sure you know how much down time you'll have setting up a new machine, whether bought or built.  Just getting FO back up and running takes a while.

Though this sounds like I'm bragging, I really am not intending to:  In late May/early June  I built a new machine in preparation for the new Ivy (yeah...I know that sounds odd...it was time to stop upgrading a six + year old machine anyway).  4K with 8gb vram, SSD, and a new/fast processor with 32gb RAM running both Skyrim and Fallout and a ton of higher quality texture/mesh files is totally worth the time and money when you spend your time (especially your non work/personal time) using a system.

A suggestion:  You should probably keep your old system to test on though - both from a system spec point of view, a 'clean mods' point of view, and to have something you could trash and not lose valuable work.

For the record:  Texas is the south; just a little different accent - that's true of South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, etc., even individual parts of those states (the SC/GA coast has a different accent than the middle parts of the states, for example :).  If you wanted "Foghorn Leghorn" though, you'd need to go to someone from northern Tennessee or central Kentucky, for example!!!

Arthoscaru:

I feel your 'not wanting others to hear'.  I wear noise cancelling headphones so I don't have to hear what's going on around me on top of that.

I don't understand why they are calling this "binaural" though - binaural means relating to or used with both ears, so any headset with two ear cups is "binaural"....
