Furry Fallout

Bad Dog

I've downloaded Fallout 4 (again) and I'm having a look. There's a pretty steep learning curve here, I think.

I'm not in love with the new tri expressions. I'd rather have an "angry" expression than have a bunch of individual part movements "left eyebrow down". The YA angry expressions include ear movement... I'm not sure how that can be reproduced here. I'll probably put some ear movement in... somewhat randomly, I'm afraid.

Still collecting tools and sorting through this mess.

I'm already looking forward to your version.

It's not gonna be too much different from the test version. Her snout is a little shorter and her pupils are a little larger.

K @LordFlawn @PenBoozerX I pulled out everything I could find with images of people, which I'm sure isn't everything. A lot of the same images are used in different contexts so I tried to weed them down to one of each and tried to keep the one with the best quality. Some of the images have damage on them--don't worry about that. If you do a clean image I can reproduce the damage. I made them all TIFs, as being a common format, but I can do something different. I'll run whatever you give me through photoshop so I can take pretty much whatever format is convenient.

Some of the images appear stretched or flipped, are they supposed to be like that or did something go sideways during export?

The game only supports textures whose resolution works in power-of-two scales (i.e. 256-512-1024-2048-4096), so for textures whose "real"/ingame aspect ratio doesn't match the 1:1/1:2 ones (aka 1024x1024 or 1024x2048 and so on), Beth either stretched/compressed them or left unused space in the canvas, as with the comic pages there.

As for flipped or rotated textures, that's something that happens a lot too and it does so on other games (not only Beth ones), but I have no idea why. That being said, I haven't seen the vanilla files for those particular textures so I can't 100% vouch for them not having been messed up during the export/conversion process somehow.

Right. If I could find a non-stretched texture I gave you that, otherwise you got the best I could do. I recommend stretching it so it looks good to you, then just send me the result. I'll shrink it back to fit the slot.

I found a bunch of higher-res images for the comics and mags. I'll post those today. Also an organizer because I think we're going to lose track of ourselves pretty quickly.

Forgot to mention, I gave you some real marginal images--a hand, an eye, a skull peeping around a door. Feel free to skip those. Feel free to grab whatever looks like fun, too.

Okay, I put up an artwork tracker with all the art I could find and I made another zip, a little more organized. All the files have been turned into tiffs.

I'll keep the tracker up to date when I put things in game. If you want to use it to track what you're working on that's fine but if it's easier to just coordinate informally that's fine too.

I'll send the link to @LordFlawn and @PenBoozerX, and anyone else who wants to contribute.

The paintings you can do if they interest you. Otherwise I'll turn screenshots into "artwork."

In general, do what's fun and what you think will have the most impact in game. @LordFlawn if you did a few variants of your vault-pup head with different expressions, I could put them in wherever he shows up, if that's simpler than dealing with each image individually.

Allright. If I do posters and other stuff that isnt mags I'll post them in my Props folder instead (did one poster for test). Drive

FFA folder is still free for anyone to post anything, basically random free-for-all for any random things anyone wants to contribute.

Do you prefer future images to be saved as TIFs instead of jpg/png?

Whatever works and has good quality. I'm always suspicious of jpegs for anything that has areas of flat color like posters and comic books.

I've got the nuka girl pictures done. I've made them transparent cutouts to maybe make it easier to add them to the posters.

Loving that fox.

Random modder's notes:

We were talking upthread about  hair with an under-hat version in the same mesh as the full version and it turns out that's how Piper's hair works:

Spoiler

ScreenShot27.png

Looks terrible in game but that's because the hat's been lifted to sit on her head and the hair hasn't.

OMG I spent HOURS yesterday working on my hash function. I noticed that all the foxes were getting the same fur color and no matter what I did I could NOT stop it from happening. I did all kinds of crazy things with the hash function and different NPCs would get picked out as foxes, but they STILL all got the same fur color. Always the foxes. Finally I realized that the foxes have 8 possible skin colors and there are 8 races--so any pair of NPCs that both hashed to fox would also hash to the same skin color.

I actually had a fix for that--the hash function gets a different seed from each place it's called--but the seed was just changing the hash result the same way for every NPC so the value would change but it was still the same value for all foxes. Once I figured that out it was simple to use the seed in a way that would give different values.

Not that anyone cares but OMG it was painful.

I went and hassled the niftools blender export/import and the OS people. The niftools people say OS is hard-coded whereas their stuff is all automatic code generation run off XML files. I'd like to play nice with them but my first impression is they've created a hard problem for themselves. Self-writing code is very hard, table-driven code is moderately hard, and besides that they have layers and layers of code to deal with. They actually have FO4 definitions coded up in the XML but don't have the machinery on top to use it--and one of the layers, pyffi, itself has to be modified to handle changes to one of the other layers. In theory this kind of generation from XML makes supporting new games simpler, cuz you just modify the XML. In practice, making and maintaining all the machinery may be harder than just writing the code. But that's just me thinking--I haven't really looked. So I have the code for OS and blender export/import downloaded and Vis Studio fired up, and I'll see what I can figure out. I'm pretty committed to making something work before I have to do heavy-duty mesh work, and before I revisit the heads. OS is doing good but you just can't smooth the bone weights the way I want.

Related, @ASlySpyDuo / @Blaze69 I haven't loaded up Max yet because my instructions for using it say it doesn't export to FO4, but to an older format that still needs conversion. That true, or are is that info out of date?

As far as I know, Max can export fully working FO4-compatible nifs just fine, you just need to get the nif plugin which IIRC was even shared by Beth and comes included with the CK download (no idea if there's a community-made version with any improvements out there or what). But I'll ask around to other FO4 modders just in case.

EDIT: Nevermind, see post below.

...okay, so, I think I may have been mistaken about this, so... yeah, that sounds about right. Max can export to "nif" that then needs to be run through another tool (Elrich) to be FO4 compatible, and apparently there's also no way to load nifs directly into Max. :classic_undecided:

Soo... yeah, I guess you're stuck with OS then.

Was completely fried today so I played the game a bit...

Also spent some time putting the mags into the game. I know that's not top on the priority list.

Maybe because tho I gave a few variants, they're all different alphas on the white fur color--cuz for foxes that's all you need. And the LM guy decided that you didn't need the full range of colors if the race gives you only one, but if the race gives you more than one you can pick any? Or something?

CALLING ALL SCREENSHOT ARTISTS! Blaze, @ASlySpyDuo, anyone else!

I can tell already as soon as the races are sorted I'm gonna be bugged by all the human posters and such around the place. I'd love to replace them with furry models, and this is the place for using all those good modern screenshots I wasn't able to use in Skyrim. I'd love it if people would make replacements that I could stick in game. If you get the shot, I can age it, put it behind advertising text, all that. Or you can give it to me game-ready. I'll collect everything and when it's time start putting them in game.

Also @Valehyena, if still around, your style would be great for pipboy image replacements.

I am still around! just been recovering from a lot of surgeries that went finally good. x3

I'm doing seams and OMG my eyes are crossing. I realized since OS is my import/export there was no reason why I shouldn't use the latest version of blender and that set me back a bit because the learning curve is outrageous. Then I started playing with the clone stamp in blender and now I'm fixing seams that way and liking it pretty well. Plan is to get all the seams and face tints working right and the art into the game, then maybe post a regular kit. I might do something with the kids but they'll probably just be smaller adults. I'm not likely to do anything more with the heads yet, tho some need work. I want to see if I can get export/import direct to blender working first, using OS's nifly code. Part of what I want to do is clean up the weights and that's better done in blender.

Ooh, looking forward to that, then.

Honestly as long as they aren't humans and they don't become sleep paralysis demons once furrified, that should be enough.

The only thing you'd be missing would be furrified baby Shaun, 'cause you'd have to make a different mesh for each playable race. I don't think making not-ugly-abomination anthro babies isn't exactly an easy task. :classic_unsure: Plan B is picking a single species and pretend he's adopted if the player isn't using it themselves, I guess.

Honestly if you could get working nif import/export to Blender, you'd be doing the Skyrim and/or FO4 modding community a great service. But at the very least it would make it easier for you to work on on this and give better (and I assume earlier) results so that's good enough for me, lol.

Maybe the kids could just have a bit bigger heads with bigger eyes ?

I did a little to make baby Shaun furry but honestly, he's pretty creepy. But there's no point in trying for better until I can do proper weight painting.

Getting Nuka Girl in game when I get sick of textures.
