KoolHndLuke Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 Could someone please explain how to both apply and remove weight painting to/from an outfit? I'm having trouble with loose fitting parts of outfits like dresses and coats or any parts of an outfit that extend too far away from the body. I have only ever copied bone weights from the reference body in Outfit Studio and sometimes loose fitting outfits turn out to be a mess! Also how does cloth physics work- like the rustling of a skirt or cape- and how might I apply it to an outfit? I'm just looking for a general outline of the process and what is involved- not a painfully detailed description unless you want to.
myuhinny Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Well you don't really want tight fitting clothing unless there isn't going to be a body underneath it or the body will be clipping through the outfit when the body parts bounce. Too remove a weight painting load the outfit into outfit studios if the outfit is dark in color hit the T key to turn off textures. Next click the part that you want to remove a weight painting from and find the node you want to remove when clicking through the bone nodes in the bone tab and then hold down the ALT key and then hold down the left mouse button and move it around to start to delete the weight painting. If you want to speed the eraser part up you can open brush settings and adjust the strength. Just remember to turn it back before you start adding a weight painting. Make sure to do it to both nifs. To add a weight paint select start a new project then select the HDT body you want then select the nif that you want to add the weight painting to and load it. Highlight the part/parts that you want to add a weight painting to and then switch to the bone tab. Mass select or select the ones that you want to add and go to shape - copy selected weights then shape - transfer selected weights. Once that's done use the export option to export the file. Spoiler
KoolHndLuke Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 Tight outfits are easy to copy bone weights. I am not always sure which bone corresponds to what part of an outfit since I usually don't do it that way. And once I copy bone weights and screw something up I didn't know how to erase weight painting from the project or nif and redo it. It makes my head hurt! But, thanks for the tips. Edit- how do you weight paint nodes that do not correspond with any one part of the reference body? I have a coat that is weighted except for a few "blank" spots.
KoolHndLuke Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 See, I can't figure out how to weight paint the masked vertices on this coat for instance. What, exactly do I need to do? I've never seen any tutorial on this. Is it a closely guarded secret?
myuhinny Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 You must unmask those spots. When you or outfit studios masks a spot it prevents anything from happening to that spot including zapping a piece. The masked part gets saved while the unmasked area gets removed.
par6six6 Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 When you get parts that aren't weighted after Copy Bone Weights, first clear the mask (under Tools) and just do it again. This time increase the Search Radius. Default is 5, I usually go up to 10. If all the parts still aren't weighted do it again at 15. That should cover everything.

But, on loose fitting outfits where you have to increase the search radius too much, it causes parts of the outfit to be weighted wrong so that you have parts of the mesh that are "sticky" and warp when you move. I figured out how to weight paint individual parts, but, there seems to be a secret to doing it properly where it works. It has something to do with the strength of the weight brush I'm sure. The way I finally fixed this outfit was to start over and ONLY copy bone weights for the breast, butt, and tummy while leaving everything else alone.
myuhinny Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 What I usually do is add the weights and then export if it throws up a error I just ignore it and after exporting I close outfit studios then start it back up again and load the nif you just exported into it. Go to the spot that is bad and weight paint the spot with whatever bone node is the closest to that spot.

I noticed different colors to indicate the strength of the bone weight on the vertices you paint. What do they mean? For instance, when I paint bone weights on a part, the color is blue.

myuhinny Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Thanks I just got done porting it to my skyrim game. The only 2 I ever mess with are are size which adjusts the size of your circle but too big might paint other spots other then the spot your trying to paint if the other spots are connected and strength which adjusts how fast the colors change. Strength also changes how fast you can erase a weight paint as well. I have never messed with either focus or spacing so I have no clue on those 2.
KoolHndLuke Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 I found the explanation here. Though he just explains the tools and what they're used for- not how to actually do specific things like properly weighting an outfit.
