Honestly, I was ready to save up to buy Skyrim on Day 1. Hell, I was even close to pre-ordering on Amazon. But then, something inside me said...

"Dude, just wait..."

...Wait for the "Game of The Year" (GoTY) edition, the one that will contain a complete set of DLCs, expansions, and other patches. I know I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm pretty sure Skyrim is getting a GoTY edition. I'm at a crossroads because I really would like to be able to play Skyrim as soon as it comes out. The trailers and interviews have convinced me that this game is worth it. The problem is (as with many things in life) the financial aspect of it. I'm not saying I'm poor or anything, but the last thing I want is buyer's remorse for being hasty and then paying the price (pun intended).

I figured that by waiting, I wouldn't have to worry about major bugs as they will eventually be fixed; I would have access to a larger number of mods since by then many Skyrim players would be more inclined to mod rather than play; and as I've said before, I would be able to get all the DLCs and expansions for one discounted price as opposed to buying everything separately, each tagged with a MSRP. The caveat to all of this, of course, is not being able to play the game right away whereas everyone else will be enjoying it. For me, I have enough games to worry about as it is, and with Assassins Creed: Revelations being released just a week after Skyrim, I know I'd have trouble balancing between them all.

So I was just curious to know how everyone here feels abou this topic. Are you getting Skyrim right away, or will you wait for the GoTY edition?

Day one buy for me.

I understand there's enough Bethesda hate to topple an Emperor-class titan. (September can't come fast enough)

But I think any Bethesda game developed in-house is worth that.

Besides DLC for FO3 sucked until Broken Steel, and most people wanted to choke a kitten for staying with good karma. Point Lookout was the only one with real quality after. When it came to Oblivion SI and KotN were the only ones worth the price. Anything else was modder-doable in a reasonable amount of time. I don't think Skyrim will break that mold.

And patches...you can't have the true Bethesda experience with them lol.

So my reason is just eagerness to play vanilla.

GoTY for me.

Patches, expansions, DLC, etc. In short, I want the whole deal at once. I wouldn't want something similar to the F-bomb in oblivion again (for those who don't know it, simply put: form-id's weren't re-used, meaning that after some time, no new randomly generated items, actors and clutter would spawn.)

Another big point for me is the modding-scene. It'll need time to develop, and I refuse to play the game without mods.[/align]

Day one (or thereabouts) for me. Doing my part to ensure it gets GoTY status by buying it then :P

That and the trailer and new variation on the Elder Scrolls theme has got me hyped already.

I'll probably buy the GoTY edition too if the game isn't released via steam, as I didn't like downloading DLC through Bethseda's website - took too long for me. That, and I'm an idiot with my money - I have 3 versions of Oblivion; PS3 version with just KotN, PS3 GoTY version with SI and KotN, and PC disc GoTY edition (I got a PS3 before I got a computer playing Oblivion to a sufficient level of 'pretty' but I really wanted to play mods after doing all the vanilla stuff on the PS3, and Morrowind modding had impressed me greatly)

Posted

Both, I already pre ordered it. But by the time GOTY comes out I'll have lost the discs and will buy it again (or not, depends on the game).

Posted

I consider Oblivion unplayable out of the box and it doesn't look to me like Bethesda have learned their lesson at all with Skyrim.

I'll wait a while for some good mods to surface, at least.

Posted

Don't think I'll buy it 11/11/11, more likely I'll wait a couple of months(?) or until an USP is released :lulz:

That should give the time to the modding community to make some great mods too.

(even if my 1st game will be as usual 100%vanilla)

I'd be buying it on the launch day. Vanilla wise, it is much better than Oblivion but we need to see if it will be stable....hopefully... >>

Pre-Order alreayd made, here.

!-The Rest of this post is My Opinion-!

As buggy as it ends up being I honestly couldn't care less. After the disapointment that was DA2 i've come to realise the value of Bethesda's games. They refine while keeping the good. The leap from Dragon Age to DA2 on Biowares part is a perfect example of dumbing down. Bethesda are the last gaming company I actually trust to release a game that will wow me, and so far they haven't failed me. Bugs I can deal with. A lot of people where disapointed in Oblivion but it completely wow'd me coming from jRPGs.

Mehrunes Dagon stomping in the Temple District and my arrow in his foot not even bothering him was a scary and thrilling experiance. Hitting him in the face with my most powerful spell only for hit to react like a moth ahd landed on his nose... priceless. I was used to spikey haired teenagers with big weapons smacking around things twice his size; but being a western RPG his size meant that some sense of realism was maintained, and you where like a mouse trying to kill a human. Realising I had to run -past- him and keep Martin alive? Amazing. He truly felt like an entity so far beyond mortals that I was honestly unsure how I was expected to beat him. Then witnessing the Avatar battle was breathtaking. NOT being the center of attention was also a bretah of fresh air. Martin's speech made me tear up a little since I ahd really felt attached to his character. Still does. However, I was pretty yougn then, so I proceeded to get pissed that I wasn't being made, or even in the running, to become the new Emperor after all I had done. Huh, thats a thought, perhaps Titus Mede is actually the CoC. Finally got pissed and took over.

I've also gotten into the Elder Scrolls Lore in a big way and even if the base game is a utter bug-fest it won't take long for unofficial patches to be churned out. I'll probobly buy to GOTY edition too; it's what I did with Oblivion. I bought Oblivion on the PC, then on the console when I had a spat with PC gaming, and then I rebought the GOTY edition for the PC.

Posted

Day one. I plan on standing in line where ever I can to make sure that I get a copy nice and quick, book a day off of work and play. As far as DLC is concerned I'll just wait for the GOTY edition. Buy it twice :P

While I have already pre-ordered Skyrim, I don't plan on palying it for a bit as I have never really enjoyed the TES series until modder's hands were involved. I think bethesida limits the potential of the TES experience to make sure the adverage computer will run the games with minimal set backs. So until I can have the game look like what I would expect a brand new release should look like graphically, I won't touch it.

You'd be right, if by average computer you mean Xbox 360.

But then most PC games from mainstream publishers these days seem to be held back by that archaic piece of scrap metal.

With how terrible of a base game Oblivion is, and with Skyrim looking worse so far, there is going to have to be one truly epic porn mod released before I consider buying it.

I don't hate Bethseda, quite the reverse. I think they are the best at this sort of action/rpg hybrid.

I'm not entirely comfortable with the overall direction of the last few games though, and the pre-release info from Beth is rather worrying. I'm a PC gamer who likes a bit of thinking with his mayhem. I don't think I'm in the majority demographic though, and that seems to be what Beth is aiming at.

So I'm going to wait. Maybe they'll get it right, and I hope they do. But I'll be damned if I'll pre-order it. I'm going to wait for the hype to die down a bit and see if the game's worth playing when the dust settles.

Will do if time permits :D

I still haven't buy New Vegas, will wait till most bugs are out... Same think for Skyrim, 11 11 11 Bethesda will release their Alpha, they often call public release... I'll wait for the Beta, 6 months later...

Undecided

I really like what i have been seeing from previews so far. Also the previews seem to be based on actual gameplay which is good so far out from release. I am probably going to preorder and i am waiting to see if there will be a collectors edition. The goodies with a CE rarely make it worth a purchase but you never know. I am also leaning towards an amazon dvd purchase as the Steam preorder bonus does nothing for me also Oblivion had problems with mod support for steam players.

So other than waiting for CE why am i waiting? we are a long ways out from release and a lot can happen. I will make a decision in October by then we will have more info (and counter info, sound and static) about how the beta is shaping up. Games with a hard fixed release date can be problematic i prefer it when developers keep themselves somewhat fluid. If it takes another month to iron out game breaking issues i would prefer they take the time and do it right than sell me something under-ripe.

Also i haven't ever seriously modded a game, too little time IRL and too few programming skills on my part. However after messing with Oblivion i am realizing that it is something i can learn to do and may be even contribute to the community. Getting in on the ground floor of a lovers remake would be interesting.

ed: Collector's edition announced at $150. i wish you could hear me laughing through the internet. regular preorder it is. . .

Your not the only one worried. I'm not 100% on this dragon shout stuff, and I read somewhere about the leveling system and it sounded terrible imo. With that said I still pre-ordered it because, hey its only 50 bucks. I spend more than that on dinner each night, so if it entertains me for more than 45 mins. I figure I really didn't lose anything.

You, you spend more than $50 a night on food? i spend less than $100/week on food. can i have your job?

to the point the shouts were not playable at quake con so bethesda is keeping that card close to their chest for now. it probably needs to be balanced more but that is just speculation. I am confused on the level scaling system as well i have heard that the dungeon locks to a level relative to your level based on a range.

for instance a level 40-50 dungeon and a lvl 1 player locks to lvl 40.

that same 40-50 dungeon and a level 45 player would lock to lvl 45.

and again 40-50 dungeon and a level 60 player would lock to lvl 50.

is that lock permanent? they made it sound as much but i might have misunderstood. also the level lock is based on skills? or did i misunderstand that as well.

In fact i am a little foggy on levels as a whole. quake con showed us a little about leveling up. as a character increases skills it levels up and you can then choose a stat to boost, either stam, health or magicka. How a character performs in combat is based on skills and perks, there being no attributes why have leveling at all? There being no classes, will there be major and minor skills? If not will i need to max all skills to get to max level? The quake-con players only got an hour to mess around and the impressions were therefore shallow.

Well, I already pre-ordered, but just switched it up a notch.

Daaamn, I didn't even notice the awesome statue; I was too in love with the 200-page Artbook. I'm a sucker for an art book - even game series' that i'm not so into.

I also note that despite the hefty price that they arn't trying to blind the buyer with goodies. A statue and awesome artbook, and a making of dvd, and the game. I'd have liked more for my money, but as I say the artbook sold me on it. They appreciate in value within a year to the point they more or less pay for the game.

I will be getting it Day 1. I've played all the TES games except for Arena and enjoyed them, warts and all. I also think that Skyrim looks like it fixes some things that really annoyed me about Oblivion.

Besides, I like to get my vanilla play out of the way with a male character before all the mods start hitting. Then I can replay with the idea of just enjoying the mods.

Though in all honesty I'm saving my real excitement for the announcement of FO4 but that's probably because I've been playing Fallout games for even longer than Elder Scrolls games and so far the two Fallout games have been superior games IMO. But Skyrim may swing that pendulum back...

Posted

Honestly, I never had an issue playing Oblivion in its vanilla form. In fact, at the peak of Oblivion's modding scene I still played the game vanilla just to be sure I experienced it as how Bethesda originally intended it. That said, I don't mind playing Skyrim in its vanilla form either. I suspect I'll be doing this at least up until I complete the main quest, and hopefully by then mods (especially Lovers-related mods) are released.

As I said before, what holds me back from jumping in on buying the game right away is that I know, without a shadow of a doubt, there is going to be a series of DLCs and expansions waiting to be released for this game. We've seen it Oblivion, we've seen it in other epic-themed games like Bioware's Dragon Age, then we'll surely see it in Skyrim. The good thing about Oblivion and Dragon Age is that they had GoTY editions containing all the major extras for the same retail price as its original. It's this notion that prevents me from buying this game on the first day, let alone pre-ordering it.

I do have to admit though, the collector's edition does look sweet with its artbook, map, and statuette.

Posted

Lol nobody buy the collectors edition now. Wait for a few months then buy it on ebay for 30 bucks. That's what I should've done when Halo Reach came out (I preordered the legendary edition before the game came out and I regret doing so). But we're all suckers to Bethesda so most of us are going to get it anyways XD.

Posted

I want to wait for GotY, all patches and DLC, plus, as I hope, lot of mods. I'am also planning big hardware upgrade for Q1 of 2012 to fully enjoy this game and possible mods.

On the other hand, I know mysefl well and probably will just pre-order/buy Skyrim as soon as I see first game review, as it happened with FNV... -_-

I already am buying the collectors edition, which though I hate how expensive it is, I sure I'll like what comes with it.

I have pre-ordered Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Skyrim will be no different.

I'm sure this will be an amazing game, and the developers know this game can break them bad if it sucks.
