when you play Fallout do you make a player character based on yourself?

or am i the only one here that does that? my brother who plays it (by it i mean Fallout games in general, forgot to mention that- fuck) on console does and so do i, i think its more personal because when you make a dude or a chick that you roleplay as more often than not the choice that that character would pick is chosen rather than your own- hence roleplay.

 

but i actually make an average of 12 different player characters in Bethesda games and my playthroughs are never concluded

 

eitherways after thinking about it its symbolically restricted to be yourself in fo4 because the stupid 3rd person pan-out camera dialogue when you speak as to fonv when all dialogue is in 1st person which is symbolic for you

 

so yep anyone else make the pc in their own image?

I used to do that.

Not anymore though, now i just make what looks cool.

 

I can't really get into Fallout 4.

I spent a really long time perfecting my character in Skyrim.

And it feels like i have to start all over again in Fallout 4.

No, I'am not female, I do not have big tits, I don't stare at myself in third person just to watch tits bounce or ass sway. so no I do not create characters in my own image nor do I play them that way.

 

True, especially when i found this site and found all the bondage mods.

I'm not going to look at a male in bondage, that is just not my thing.

Also, most mods here are female oriented anyway.

Not at all, self insertion is the worst form of role playing.

 

in new vegas my 1st playthrough was all self insertion and it was an epic tale with themes of

underdog

loyalty (to Cass and Ed-E),

pride (of being irl Californian and fan-boying the NCR)  

being a pawn(i use to help out the NCR anyway i could and i did all the bitchwork and won them territories and saved their people only to be a common unrecognized and uncredited soldier), 

hubris (on the NCRs part),

betrayal (the NCR threatening me for hanging out with Yesman)

being a man of my own- symbolism, forshadowing, and personification becoming independant just as new vegas (i fuckin wiped those ungreatful fucks off the face of my land)

the wild card and ace in the hole (killed Mr.House for being a dickwad and then reaching the best possible ending for the greater good and complete independance of the mojave)

 

lol i actually hate the NCR  more than the Legion

 

i get what youre saying but putting yourself in those situations is a deviated form of the orthodox idea of roleplay

Nah. Never saw the appeal or the point of it. Ultimately it just ends up being a false image of yourself based on who you WANT to be rather than who you are. It's ego-stroking of the highest order.

 

But if that's your thing? Go for it. RPGs are power fantasies anyway - it's a large part of their appeal. Modeling the main character after yourself is just taking it a step further by inserting yourself into the power fantasy instead of using a vessel.

I always take the least ugly vanilla preset and modify the dominant facial features according to the ones I'm pretty familiar with whenever possible and in Skyrim it wasn't. There the Scandinavian environment (where blondes have more fun, legend has it) made it impossible to end up with a misplaced black-haired, colored Latina /w cheekbones to die for akin to me that goes under the crack jaw name Ástríður Pálsdóttir. She simply had to be a dominant blonde shield maiden to be taken seriously by me and probably the bearded AI warriors on site as well.
Of course, I always play my avatar in different roles, I'm the driver after all, equipped with imaginary skills and gifts not even the male gods themselves have ever heard of, and that, boys and girls, I love most. What I'm trying to say is, I switch roles at will without changing hair color or boob size. Once my char leaves the sliders she's the only one in game, there will be no other, I just accept her looks as given.

Dot, dot, comma, dash - smiley char face in a flash :lol:

I play RPGs the same way I read a book or watch movie/series.

I am simply the audience enjoying the narrative.

 

Making myself a character in a game is kind of narcissistic don't you think?

Always imagined the future of gaming would be extremely realistic graphics to the point where you would be able to get an exact model of yourself (or what you'd like yourself to look like) into the game.  I think most would alter a few things such as height, shape or maybe even hair color/style.  I wouldn't mind playing myself in a game but I'm barely able to pull of a decent looking character, never mind and exact replica of myself.  Plus, I generally play modded games as female for fun. 

 

I don't play as myself for that reason, yet, but I imagine a lot of people do.  To each their own.

In every game that allows it, especially RPGs, I make a female character. It's fun to get somehow the POV of the other sex in various situations and how I make her react.

There are other games though like Sims where I create a character that looks like me, oh and a hot neighboor so he can get ask her out lmao.

 

I did make a char that looked like me on a New Vegas playthrough, it was fun.

 I tried playing Fallout 3 as a man; never again. I'm a wuss in real life, and would never do

anything in the Fallout world beyond repairing things within the safe confines of Megaton

or Tenpenny Towers. I enjoy playing a female and being cute or sexy, depending on the character.

Nope, I stick to a crazy char that is just loosely of my kind, close enough for acceptance w/o irritations and far-off enough to keep the fuzz-free fun. Usually the first time around I'll play as myself. I want to feel as immersed as possible, so it helps if NPCs are using my name and I 

look vaguely similar to me. After the first playthrough though I do whatever, create crazy looking characters, female characters,

whatever strikes me as being entertaining enough to warrant a second (or thirtieth restart via mods) playthrough.

I can pretty much agree with this. In my entire gaming life, I've usually treated the characters I create as protagonists in a convoluted, sometimes twisted story. I guide them, keep them evolving within the available paths laid out before them, and try like hell to keep the identities I've given them solid, just like any novel or screenplay. Either saintly or satanic, they are all separate individuals with their own lives. All I do is look through their eyes.

 

Of course, If I was 'Der Chosen Wan' it would be a short game. "You want me to do what?!?!?? Screw dat! YOU go fight the Deathclaw with the Legendary Spatula of Spankery. I'm going to give you my impression of the Road Runner....MeepMeep...."

Actually, in games we usually never play ourselves, we are always somebody else and this already at the age of three, the age of my son whose name ain't Shaun, just sayin'. Right now he plays either Shere Khan the tiger or Mowgli the jungle boy, the evil other he or the good one, totally independent of gender and even the species (a few months ago he performed as 'Mama Moo'), often the proverbial antagonists, never himself tho, the all-too human combination of both good and evil within. Self-performance, apparently that's commonly understood as utmost boring and not part of our human nature in a play. Acting according to a scripted role is something else, it's skill-based interpretation - in a Shakespearean drama you might play Romeo and me Juliet, not vice versa tho. In RL we see a gender-specific role restriction. Needless to say that I'd pee in sheer desperation from the balcony when you start to blubber the infamous lines. Now, in a modern RPG we have the combination of both, visual role and scripted role. You are free now to choose between Romeo and Juliet but you're still forced into the Shakespearean drama - the scripted main story. And that is what many players pisses off, they don't like the prefab roles Bethesda has dedicated to them, they'd pretty much like to avoid ending up on the frakkin balcony, shouting 'Romeo, oh Romeo'! How to solve the problem? Probably by shouting 'Fuck you, Romeo!' at a certain point in game and by starting your very own Jungle Book adventure as you did already in the days of your childhood. When my little boy returns from his daily jungle adventures of the mind I sometimes call him 'Junior' (the lil elephant in the story). That he really doesn't like and he insists on his real name instead, and I know for sure that he's back home at Mama's again...

Being a modding fan and a psychologist, I really enjoyed this thread. Not many people asks this question of such a mundane choice gamers are ask of a regular basis.  In my field, it's a big tell about a person much like the music they choose to listen to.

When I think of a protagonist, I don't see my own image and think I should or would be one. Not insulting my looks, but, I get an image in my head and run with it.

 

If I could make the decisions the exact way I would want to, instead of the way developers decided for me, maybe I could immerse myself into the game AS myself.

 

Regarding gender in games, I tend to play male characters, not because I immerse better with a male, but because I can't really imagine raiders and bandits trying to kill chicks so much as other things, things made in mods that make me uneasy. I've been here to long.  :s  :D  :s

One doesn't have to be a disciple of Sigmund Freud to know that in a virtual RPG it is always the own mind that drives an alien body - the avatar. Being not in the own body is what defines virtuality. How close or far off the avatar appears compared to the own body depends thus on the individual understanding of comfort as well as the own intentions in a given virtual story. And hardly anybody is still puzzled as to why straight folk that play the opposing sex by above reasons almost inevitably become gay in game. Or as Richard III of England in his role as Mary of Burgundy once has shouted: "My kingdom! My kingdom for a horse strap-on mod!" Legend has it.

Physically? No, but who's to say I'm happy with how I look in real life?

Mentally? Might sound obvious or dumb but I do try to make decisions in the game based on how I would in a real life encounter. Whether good or bad. Normally I make a bunch of good decisions then one really big bad one(like killing Shaun with a wrench) that breaks it even : p In the other Fallout games, I would be neutral for a long time in the karma meter(which I miss).

I try role playing in other scenarios but I always end up reverting back to, "How would I truly handle this though?".
