zzz72w3r Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I don't have FO4 yet so I am purely based my opinion on screenshots. Also that 99.9% of the nude screenshots are female so that's what I am referring to. I am also guessing the nude bodies I see are almost all Bodyslide outputs. The toons all just seem a bit "not-right" to me and I don't mean the more extreme Bodyslide bodies, which my brain never reject in FO3/NV or Skyrim. I am bothered even by FO4 character shots referencing Type3, UNP, CBBE base types. My brain just keep telling me something is "off", not the bodies as seen in Bodyslide but when attached to in-game toon. Is it due to ratios are really indeed a bit off because of vanilla skeleton, or just me sinking into uncanny valley due to the new head morphs?

It doesn't help that you can't make a good face either.
tenzan Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Probably a bit of everything you listed. For me it comes down to animations usually and how they 'rest'. Proportions will always be a bit off from what the static posed body will look like. That said, I think bodyslide in FO4 has much better sliders and FO4 doesn't have that horrible female-with-male-shoulder problem that FO3 had. Default FO4 body proportions aren't too bad either. Also just by nature of the lighting and color theme of FO, some shit will always look weird. All default eyes and newer eyes look super bloodshot and dirty to me and faces largely look the same. Siderant: I hate the quality of animation in Beth games. No clue if it's the same animators all the way through, but it feels like it.

I don't mean deformation from posing, which is probably still unavoidable. It is also a totally different subject. I also rule out lighting because the brain does make a distinction between something I don't like vs. something that is "off". I am curious is if indeed the ratios are off (which is math) or uncanny valley due to advancement of head morph.
Nickolos1818 Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Beth likes to do a " rotation " with animators. They work on a project ( say Idle animations ) , get a break, then put on another project ( Weapon animations and so on ). That way they get a collection of animations for the same thing and then they do a selection of a handful to test out and that continues on until they have a small list left. This way the animators don't get burnt out on doing the same thing over and over. Is also why in Beth games you see say dogs, wolves, mole rats almost always using a same base animation for say running. They reuse yet update a lot of animations. As the game render engines get stronger each year they can do more. Take for instance the new ghoul and deathclaw animations in F4 compared to F3 and NV. An improvement is an understatement.
AsariX Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I'm not sure if it's caused by the skeleton or by the animations, but I think the (female) characters have the "wrong" arch in their back. Now, female backsides are rarely pronouncedly arched anyway, except when posing for nudeshots, but the FO4 females have it in every pose, making it almost look as if their shoulders end up above their toes rather than above their knees.
spoonsinger Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I know what you mean. They do look slightly off. Actually reminded me of :- [video=youtube]
crusher Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I have this feeling almost always when playing any new game. Even the with most extreme differences in RL, people are really only very slight variations on the Golden Ratio (artist learn this lesson in anatomy 101). We innately sense slight variations for identity and associations. In a virtual world, there's a burn-in time for me -- several hours of gameplay and everything begins to seem less Uncanny. Witcher 3 was pretty amazing, with very convincing animations (mo-cap) and models. I'm also pretty happy with F4, default body and improved animations. BodySlide really helps, but takes hours to get just the right --Canny Ratio-- that works well with all the in-game morph variations. There is a strange default cartoonyness about the render in F4 -- Installing SweetFX Reshade helps immensely. Then, add new/improved normal maps from Nuclear Nude or similar, things get better.. some people are very artful, thoughtful at tweaking their toons. I started with the vanilla BS body and imrpoved upon that, adding new convincing character to all the npc likewise . I just started playing F4, knowing that modding was the only way I'd get beyond the vanilla uncanniness. yeah, it's a little of everything -- to tweak out the uncanny. When Mod Organizer is out of beta, would be a good time to purchase F4. It is the tool that makes Bethesda games shine. Also a good time to support the author of MO, he's taken gaming to a new level.
Digitus Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 It simply has to do with the fact that you aren't playing the game yet and you don't know what normal is for this game. Right now your brain is trying to slot FO4 characters into whatever you're familiar with currently and the two ideals are clashing and in your mind you know something is wrong (the FO4 models don't fit your references) but consciously you're not quite sure why that is. Once you actually get the game and start playing things will begin to normalize. It's kind of like the uncanny valley phenomenon except it's all artificial.

LaEspada Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 It's not just you, i've noticed the same thing when I tried out the 7B CBBE bodyslide. It's 100% identical to Skyrim's 7B body, but it feels wrong. I view it as the skeleton and animations, like someone said before, the idle animations are different and leads to different perspectives.
panthercom Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I haven't noticed anything off, but I might have been staring at Cait's tits too much to notice. Don't overlook the effect of the difference in default FOV in FO4 vs Skyrim; some of the difference might be 'optical distortion' caused by a different camera 'lens' and or camera height and position.
