Skyrim With Low VRAM

I had a 2gb gtx 660 that struggled with my intensive modding :P Now with 4gb gtx 970  its vastly better

But I know your pain :( Before the 660 I had a gtx 220, 700 something MB card...768 I think? A tad bit more than yours)...and oh boy I always figured Skyrim fried it cause I made the game too intense for that card rofl.

God that looks horrible, My graphics card died not that long ago because AMD makes shit products but that isn't my point.
After having to downgrade to a GTX 660 I was terrified I wouldn't be able to run games as well as the other card had...but so far I haven't had any issues.
I had no idea this could even happen honestly.

I believe that I should be glad that my humble AMD Radeon HD 5500 with his "powerful" 1GB video card can handle all the stuff Skyrim can throw at it.

The only character in my game that has no textures is that Forsworn guy with that scar where his heart was supposed to be (Errgh! That's one horrible sight). I can only see his body when I loot him.

As suggested above, texture improvements like Bethesda Performance Textures - Armor - Clothes - Weapons and Optimized Vanilla Textures should help you alleviate at least some of these issues.

If you're willing to suffer stepping backwards in resolution (like running at 720p vs 1080p), I discovered a trick with ENBoost + OneTweak settings that allowed me to run in borderless windowed mode at a lower resolution, but the window stretched to the full size of my screen like I was playing fullscreen.  You get a bit more jaggedness, so you may need to play a bit with antialiasing to find the sweet spot with which you're willing to live.

Install the vanilla ENB from enbdev.com, and OneTweak from Nexus.  Don't try and use any ENB presets with such a lightweight video card...you only want the ENB for ENBoost and to force windowed mode.  Even though the vanilla game and OneTweak both have settings to toggle windowed mode, this trick didn't work for me without the ENB.  This should work with the most recent .305 version of the ENB, though when I did this, I was using .272 or .279 versions.

I use the WrapperVersion of ENB.  Not sure how well this works with the InjectorVersion of ENB, but if you want try it, you'll need to launch the game once to generate the enblocal.ini file before you can make these edits.  You already have to do this to generate the contents of the onetweak.ini, anyway, so not really that big of a deal.  Main difference between Wrapper and Injector is the Wrapper uses a DX9 dll to hook the ENB, where the Injector has a ENBInjector.exe you run before you start the game.

enblocal.ini changes (I'm only referencing changes, there's more to this file than I'm pasting here)

[GLOBAL]
UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=true

[MEMORY]
EnableCompression=true
AutodetectVideoMemorySize=true

[WINDOW]
ForceBorderless=true
ForceBorderlessFullscreen=true

The memory settings aren't necessary, but should help you have more usable VRAM.  If you decide to tinker with other settings, be sure to read up on STEP for best practices.

onetweak.ini changes (this is not a mistake):

[Global]

BorderlessWindow=false

You'll also want to start the Skyrim Launcher and step down your resolution 1 step from your native desktop settings (assuming they were identical).  Also, you'll want to select Windowed mode here, or edit your SkyrimPrefs.ini and set "bFull Screen=0" under Display (not entirely sure this last part is necessary, as ENB settings should override this).

After all that, the next time you launch Skyrim, it should start up in fullscreen borderless mode and stretch to the full size of your desktop.  Sometimes the X,Y alignment of the window is off by a few pixels.  Just exit and relaunch the game if that happens...may take more than once.  Kind of annoying, but this is whole thing is a hack ;)

Also, as has already been suggested, install low resolution optimized texture replacers.

I'll check that out.

I LOVE not having money to buy a new PC! :)

(I need $1400)

This is the joys of 528MB VRAM. *sigh*

I can't play Skyrim anymore, so much stutter too. I tried removing many mods but alas its still the same. My machine is too dated for anything anymore. Heck I can barely run any 90's games! >.<
