UPDATE: Can Settlers be Synths? Most Likely Another Game Bug

Recommended Posts

This came as a surprise.  I got the message to defend the Castle.  Fast traveled there and found myself surrounded by Synths (Gen 2, I think).  Killed them with only a small amount of health left on my meter only to be killed by a settler.  Started over only this time went to the Castle before I got the message and fought the Synths 'at the gates'.  After finally killing the Synths the settlers, all of them, then turned on me; none of the Minutemen, only the settlers.

If this is a glitch it's both confounding and interesting.

I had this happen as well.  Castle pop. went from 20 to 2(minutemen).  I think it's a bug since many hrs of gameplay before I defended a settlement and was scoped, only to have a settler get in my way.  Looted the corpse and found a synth component.  At the time I thought I killed a settler to cause it, but now, not so much.

I heard they can be synths! But I never went Into full investigation mode. (Cause I didn't care) but i was told place an alarm in ur base and ur setles will use it if thee is a synth?

I hardly ever seem to get settlement attacks, and have yet to have one by synths, but yes, I've seen it said that synths can infiltrate your settlements by posing as settlers, and they will turn on you during a synth attack. From the way you're describing it though it sounds like it happened on a larger scale than the game intended, so it might be partly down to a bug.

If the whole 'Synths infiltrating settlements' is part of the game, well then, that makes it all the more interesting.  I wonder how this will affect relations with the Railroad.

I was in the middle of a quest and couldn't leave to defend Star Light Drive-In.  Before this, the population was only 17.  When brought up the pip-boy to fast travel, it showed only a population of 2.  When I arrived and accessed the workbench, I had a population of 21.  Those are some magical settlers.

I'll try that, thanks.

It appears to be randomly generated.  Sanctuary only had 1 invasion and that was in the beginning of the game.  Star Light and Greentop farm have steady invasions.  Murkwater Construction just can't get enough of those Mirelurk Queens.

Minutemen and the Railroad.  Just started the RR questline and Decker mentioned I'm General of the Minutemen which got me accepted into the RR.

EDIT

I did help out Paladin Danse early in the game, but only to get the Junk Jet.  After that, I never took on any more missions for him.

I completed the Institute faction quest line and even stuck around afterward and explored the Boston area.. I NEVER got a synth warning. Got Ghoul warnings and such no Synth warnings. I have Valentine and the Institute companion (forget the name now X something) If that makes a difference. I also have only about 4 settlements.. (base settlements required for the quest line etc, nothing complex)

yep synth inflitrate your settlements. The only way so far i manage to noticed it on my game when happiness starts to dwindle even though i meet all requirements, like defense, food, bed  and water and still happiness lowers then that is a good indication you been infiltrated. better visit the settlement if you got turrets they will fire on the synth if they walk too close by. Also if you have dogmeat with you he will attack the synth settler.

I guess I'll check the meter often.  I don't have Dogmeat maybe I can get Piper to weed out the imposters.

"Hey Piper, see those settlers?  Go to each one and bite them on the ass.  If they scream like C3P0, bite them again."

UPDATE

It appears to work.  I had 21 settlers at Star Light Drive-In with food, water, beds that exceeded the total population and the happiness meter was negative, though it stayed at 81%.  Set up some turrets near the entrance of the houses I built for them then left.  Finished some quests then had a look at the drive-in on my pip-boy.  The population reduced by 1.  Went there and did not find any bodies, all looked normal.  Entered into workshop mode and saw the population was back to 21, but the happiness meter was now positive.

OH SNAP...!!!

I had a shit ton of turrets at my settlements. Heavy, heavy defense. I didn't know that I could get away with less. (afraid of feral ghoul invasion). if this is true.. any synth that came near would have been killed. Wondered why I found a random body nearby them. I thought there was a battle never imagined the turrets shot a synth.

The probability for a settlement to be attacked is directly proportional to the food + water + num of settlers and inverse proportional to the amount of defenses.

The "level" of the attackers is proportional to (food + water) AND the level of the player.

Tell me why on my "StarLight Drive-In" (23 settlers, 40 food, 52 water, 180 defense), I got attacked continuously by Legendary Alpha Deathclaws.

(Maybe because I am level 81)

Synth race (gen 1 and 2) is with a faction that is just an enemy of the "humans" and "ghoul" and "green skin" factions. The exception are the humans in the institute that have a special "friend" faction.

So if they are close, they start combat no matter what.

Gen 3 does not have the same faction. (But I will not explain why because of spoilers.)

So Gen 3 Synths will attack Gen 1 and 2 and humans (regardless if you're with the Railroad).  That would explain why when I had a random encounter with 2 men, one was about to kill his brother because "he's a synth".  I acted as peace-keeper and stopped the one brother from killing the other only to have that (accused) brother get up and attack both of us.  Killed him and looted synth components from the corpse.

That must've been Art & Art. It's a scripted random event, and I have yet to hear of a "correct solution".

In my first playthrough, I simply killed both.

In my second playthrough, I actually encountered the event twice!

If you just let them have their shoot-out, the synth eventually usually wins.

if you walk up to them and use the activate button on one of them before they start shooting you can engage in conversion. The synth will attack if you make particular choices, the synth subsequently got his head blow off by me, and all was merry there after.

So, what? The solution to synth infiltrators is a turret next to every door? Good way to make your settlers feel like they're living in some kind of Orwellian police state.

I read somewhere that if you place an emergency siren in your settlement, it counters synths infiltrators. I have one in every settlement and no synths so far, unless everyone is a synth....

Well if you want peace of mind there is a mod that permits you to craft synth detecting glasses:

www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/7342/?

It would be cheating but can be used on a side save to check the infiltration mechanics ...

Reminds me of the movie "They Live" when Roddy Piper puts on those special glasses and sees the aliens living among the humans.

I figured out why the settlers turned against me after the battle with the synths; there is a high probability this is a game bug.

What led me to this conclusion?  Two incidents with two followers, Nick and Piper.

Incident #1

Piper and I was on the road pass the National Guard Training Yard and satellite arrays when I noticed one of my provisioners up ahead.  A mirelurk appears and the provisioner and Piper aggro'd.  After killing the mirelurk, Piper went psycho against the provisioner.  I stood back watching, not knowing what to do, until the provisioner died then the menu to send Piper to one of my settlements popped up for about 3 seconds followed by the message "Piper disliked that" then she started attacking me.

Incident #2

Same outcome except this time I was with Nick and we were helping Cricket fight off some gunners.  During the fight I got the same menu flashed asking me which settlement to send Nick then he attacked me.

So with that in mind, if your own settlers or followers attack you for no apparent reason then chalk it up to another game bug.

Actually, some settlers can be synth.

True, but when followers bug-out and turn on you during a firefight then you have to wonder if the same can happen to settlers or other allied NPCs.  The settlers that turned on me did so after defeating some Gen-2 synths.

Also I encountered two gunners who spoke like synths (synth voice and dialogues).  First time this happened to me.
