I have played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. I would recommend trying all three of these as they are great games. The story of the Elderscrolls changes so much from game to game that it's not neccessary to play them all to understand whats going on.

For example in Skyrim the Mages Guild is no longer present in the same way as it was in Morrowind and Oblivion. This is due to there no longer being a Mages Guild per se.

A lot of people play just one or two games and are happy with that. I've never played Arena and Daggerfall for example.

Each TES game pushes the story of the world forward, and in each game you get a chance to learn all the lore necessary to understand what's going on, so from that perspective, you absolutely don't need to play either Morrowind or Oblivion to play Skyrim, enjoy it and immerse yourself in the lore.

That said, each TES game is also packed with references to the events of the previous game(s), so if you play through all of them thoroughly and in a chronological order, you'll see things you would have otherwise missed. Again, this doesn't preclude you playing any of the games and having loads of fun with it, it's just an extra layer of "fanservice" for those who did play them all. Ultimately, it's like many good ongoing franchises, where you can jump in at any point and you should be able to follow the story, but you won't get all the nuances if you didn't follow it from the beginning.

First no console crap for me PC master race gamer here ;) .

PC version Morrowind is MUST have. 10/10(with mods 12/10 :D in 2002 i was blown away by this game one of my best ever games ive played)

PC version Skyrim for mods.7/10(vanilla version sucked(mods safe this game with 8.5/10)

Arena in my eyes to old now. can't judge never played it.

PC version(dont think it was ever released on consoles?)Daggerfall for me was bug fest so never played it for maybe few hours. This was at the time on windows 98 was not my best experience i could not properly get it working so 4/10

PC version Oblivion to me is abominations i avoid it like the plague never liked it only dark brotherhood quest line was ok, rest was shit. 3/10

Each game takes place in a different era IIRC and the stories and characters aren't interconnected. So i would say you don't need to play them all to understand it. There is a lot of in-game literature as well to help understand the lore and famous characters etc.

But you should play them all anyway as they are indeed great games.

In my opinion it's really hard to appreciate older episodes once you get used to the latest graphics (I'm talking about all game series, not just TES). Most series have such a long lifespan, they were run on platforms so different from today's OSes. Virtualization tools like DOSBOX make retrogaming possible, but I don't find it very appealing for the reasons above (though admittedly Arena and Daggerfall must have been very good games).

I played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Reading in game books and asking NPCs in Morrowind about every available topic was good enough for me. You can easily understand the world of TES by doing that. At least I think so, I've never played Daggerfall or Arena.

Vanilla Morrowind was and still is absolutely amazing. Oblivion was awful and vanilla Skyrim is, well, boring. I highly recommend playing them with all the DLCs. Mods will easily fix most of their issues.

You would need to play all 5 because even if the Dunmers in Skyrim talk about Morrowind, Red Mountain etc... you haven't experienced the actual event, or even the game world where it occured. Me on the other, unless I've played that very old game during it's prime time I have no means to play it. Regardless how good it is. I've tried with Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics. I've tried with Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion. It just doesn't spark any interest. I will at least some day try to play through Morrowind and Oblivion vanilla only. I have no desire to mod those games.

But QuiteTheTail pretty muched described it for me.

I have played Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. And I still have no idea what the fuck is going on in the "lore".

Each game pretty much follows its own lead up to its own conflict and its own results.

At best you have them referencing each other slightly, the biggest continuation of what happened is probably Morrowind to Skyrim:Dragonborn, but that's still not all that important lore wise... and to be honest it sort of makes it even weirder.

The end of Oblivion does sort of serve to lead into the state of the world at the start of Skyrim, but they are hundreds of years apart and much of the build up is added in as brand new "lore" that was created for Skyrim.

It is not bad necessarily, but rather I have a hard time believing that it was all planned from the start and not just some contrive and retconning of ideas to keep the series going.

I only played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim; and no you don't need to play the previous two to enjoy Skyrim.  There's a series of books in Skyrim detailing the Oblivion crisis, and you can find out what happened in Morrowind after the MQ by talking to the Dunmer on Solstheim in the Dragonborn DLC.

Each game takes place in a different era IIRC and the stories and characters aren't interconnected.

ESO and Redguard are in 2E, Battlespire, Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion are all in 3E, Skyrim's 4E.

In addition, the stories aren't necessarily directly interconnected, but there's still progression from the first game onwards. The first 4 games are pretty much part of a single big arc showing the final few years of the Septim reign. Morrowind even directly foreshadows how things are gonna go, with Wulf (Talos himself walking around as an avatar on Nirn) talking about big change coming in and the end of the Empire as it was. The first i played was Morrowind, Oblivion second, then got around to Arena and Daggerfall (and of course Skyrim when it came out), and i got the gist of things fairly well, just be sure to read those books :P.

Ultimately, don't forget there's the UESP and Imperial Library and such to get caught up on lore if you don't wanna start from the beginning or read every single book.

I don't really think you HAVE to play all the games, but I do suggest reading everything you can about the lore, it's all on the internet. Read the books in game too.

[Off topic] Now that you mention it, books are among the things that make TES games so interesting, and not just lore books. I re-read Mistery of Talara every now and then (great story) and also Decumus Scotti's travel journals ("The Argonian Account" and "A Dance in Fire"). "Song of Hrormir" is also one of my favorites (due to the well-spoken and glad-hearted character), but now I must stop or the list may grow up undefinitely.

if you want to know ALL lore then yes some games have bits of lore others might not mention.

if you as i think you were talking about knowing generally all leaving small bug size lore out then play tes 3-5. daggerfall and arena for me dont give out too much lore to justify terribly dated gameplay.

I've read a lot of the in-game books and huge swaths of lore articles on UESP and the TES Wikia. I think that's going to give you a better understanding of the lore and how it connects together than playing the games, in the same way that a map of a forest will give you a better sense of what it looks like than simply stomping through the bushes. I've played Skyrim and Oblivion an embarrassingly large number of times and I certainly don't know everything about them.

I've tried playing Morrowind too, but it's just too dated. I can't get past Balmora without getting bored of it. So I went and read about it instead. Maybe if/when they ever finish that Skywind mod...

It's the same story with Fallout. I went and read all the lore and backstory for every Fallout game, but I've only ever played Fallout 3 and NV. I tried to play Fallout 1 and 2, but they're just too old and I couldn't get into them.
