Are the tools and programs used to mod Skyrim compatible with Windows 10?

Windows 10 Home has updates auto update, even drivers. Not possible to disable. Pro/Enterprise updates can be held off for a maximum of 30 days or so, but then get installed with or without your permission. Since updates can be botched occasionally, particularly Kernal/Kernal Mode Driver/USB updates, it might be bad overall for gamers. Forced updates of GPU drivers isnt something I would want. I suspect however that enough people will complain about the auto updates and that hopefully Microsoft will address the issue.

Even graphics card drivers?

Nvdia has their own Geoforce Experience system that works with Windows 10 and does it's own driver updates so the answer is: it depends. Use the generic drivers that come with Windows 10 and you get the Windows 10 generic driver updates. If you have a device that has it's own updates process it appears you get the custom updates through that process instead of the generic.

Come on in, the water's fine <g>.

Yeah, fuck that.

I run 2 AMD cards and I use custom modded drivers to run specific games at custom settings and for other performance reasons.

If Windows tells me "sorry bro, you gotta use this driver instead because it's newer, and stuff" then Windows 10 can get lost.

I have no issue with MS making people keep core windows components up to date so as to minimise exploits, but telling me what graphics drivers I can and can't use will not end well for them

If you're custom modding the driver itself just give it a version number that makes Windows see it as a newer version than anything they have.

Seems as though I won't have to go through all that.

In W10 I can right click start button go to control panel, then system, then advanced system settings, then hardware tab, device installation settings then select "no, let me choose what to do" and "never install driver from win update".

That being said though, I feel like options such as this still have their days numbered.

I don't think so, MS has always been pretty friendly to the techie crowd. This auto-download and install stuff is really for the non-techie crowd who have really been left to fend for themselves for a very long time. The problem is that the non-techie crowd outnumbers us by a huge margin and this is MS finally getting around to recognizing that fact and making it default to safer for the average person. Us techie types are capable of finding and turning off the things we don't like and MS definitely has made it possible to turn off those updates if we feel we have to.

Tried to update Windows 7 to Windows 10. Miserable failure on installed applications (including Skyrim.)

Did a new fresh install of Windows 10: everything is fine.

The graphic card is a nVidia GeForce 960 (Asus is the manufacturer) and it was recognized and used without any problem.

On Windows 10 Skyrim works just fine, the Creation Kit too, but requires to be run as administrator.

Mod Organizer has no problems.

So far LOOT,Wrye Bash, Legendary Edition, MO, NMM, Save Cleaner tool (for new vegas and Skyrim), and pretty much all my tools work for me.

Honestly, I like Windows 10 as an OS so far, only thing thats bugging me is Microsoft Edge (some new windows 10 exclusive browser) There are alot of neat features and it really helps me organize my schedule / research alot more than the other OS's did.

You can install Chrome or Firefox and make them the default browser.

Not difficult to do it, but is done is a different way compared to the previous versions of Windows. (And when you get used to it, it is simpler that the previous mode.)

Oh i already had chrome installed from the jump and everything carried over. I'm talking about how edge works. Trying to get rid of the stigma of "Internet Explorer" with this appearingly fast and sleek looking browser that crashes every 10 minutes.

Before I review or talk about any kind of product of software, I try it first. Put in some real hours trying to combine it with my everyday life to see if its really useful.

Like, I can actually use cortana to look for loose .pex files easier than any other program that tries to do so.

Cortana does not recognize my voice...

Yesterday I asked: "Open SexLab Tags 1<dot>sixty"

And the result was: "The closest gas station is 1.9 miles away"

No kidding.  :)

LMAO.

As for problems with Skyrim and windows10 i see nothing. I reinstalled Skyrim and redownloaded all the mods(both from here and nexus) and i still see no problems (apart from the normal ones everyone has).

Upgrade if you want, dont if you dont want. But remember you have till 2020 for windows 7 support to end and 2023 for 8/8.1 also you have 1 whole year to upgrade to windows 10 for free to take your time(I would say wait for 5 months then upgrade if you want).

This is exactly the route I'm going and have recommended that my friends go with too. There's no rush.

I don't know. There a few days that I am using Windows 10, and I really like it. Slightly better than 7 and way batter than 8.

I don't doubt the potential improvements, I've spoken to lots of people who have lauded the OS as the best iteration ever. I just think there's nothing wrong with sticking to my stable Win7 for a few more months.

lmao, thats funny. I have an accent as well, so when I speak sometimes it doesn't get it right immediately.

If the voice recognition was multi lingual / better, would be so great!

Not really.

I tried with settings in English, Spanish, French, and Italian. (Not able to set it to Russian, I don't know why.)

My original mother tongue is Italian.

I tried:

"Hey Cortana: dimmi che tempo fa a Roma" (Hey Cortana, tell me the weather in Rome.)

The answer: "Sono le ore 10 a Roma" (It is 10PM in Rome)

Right now Cortana is disabled on my Win10, until Microsoft will do some serious update on the speak recognition...

P.S. never had a real problem with "OK, Google"... When I need to find a place using google maps associated with my Android phone, I just ask, and 99% of the time I get the right answer.

P.P.S. Never tried Siri (or any Apple device), don't ask me anything about it.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. The title is self explanatory so I am really asking if there will be a compatibility problem with SKSE, MOD Manager, SkyUI and any other tool or modder resource?

I mean I have pretty much a lot of stuff from modding this game and I am afraid that upgrading could cause issues.

Funny you mention that.  I can't say for sure if this is due to Windows 10 but I have been having problems following an upgrade.

im having issues merging things with tesvedit on win10 the command prompt box never shows up

You are trying to open a command prompt? Shift-Right-Click on any folder in Explorer should give you an "Open Command Window here" option.

no tes5edit is

Your merged file has been created successfully.  It has 3337 records.

Batch copying is enabled, so asset copying will now be performed in a cmd window.
Please do not close the cmd window, it will close itself when asset copying is completed.
It's also important that you don't close xEdit until the asset copying is completed.
<<< never opens on ten i supect it part of the new security built into  os not a bigge really can just make sure stuff merged on other os :-)

Odd, I have run the DynLOD stuff several times with TESVEDIT under Windows 10 and it doesn't have any problem opening command windows to do it's processing.

I will download the Merge mods script and install it again to see if I can reproduce your problem though.

Edit: Downloaded the Merge script and merged two mods with it, no problems encountered.   So strike being able to easily reproduce your problem :(.  Next question I guess is was this a fresh install of Windows 10 or did you upgrade an existing Windows install?  For comparison my machine where things seem to work started as Windows 8 and has been upgraded to Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Steam and the game are installed to C:\Program Files (x86) as default and MO is installed in the Skyrim folder (I would NOT recommend you reinstall everything that way but if there's a difference in how you've installed that may point a way to a solution).

I've experimented a couple of years ago with using Windows speech recognition to dictate documents instead of typing them.  I found that it really didn't work unless you had a headset mic.  So probably Cortana is the same way.

I was using an high quality microphone used for professional recording.

Maybe Cortana requires a "low level mic"  :P Or maybe is just my voice that is simply not good enough  :D  :D  :D
