wr1 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Hey folks, I'd been hoping to play some modded Skyrim tonight after a long hiatus but for reasons unknown, when I try to run FNIS through Mod Organizer, I get an error message "The Application Could Not Be Started", although it runs if I just run it through Windows. (I just upgraded to Windows 10 and wonder if that might have something to do with it.) Anyway, I'm considering maybe simply not using MO if I can't run FNIS at all and attempting to directly patch Skyrim, which I have never done before. However my internet connection speed is pretty slow so it will be a real pain in the ass if I have to re-download Skyrim from Steam in order to reinstall it in the event that I break Skyrim by accident. I thought it might be a good idea to ask if the list of mods I've got going seems like it would be stable or workable. Thanks for any thoughts! -WR
Dinosaurus Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Did you follow the S.T.E.P instructions on how to run FNIS through Mod Organizer? Also, it is possible that when you upgraded WIndows your UAC permissions maybe are set so that maybe it's blocking FNIS from being able to launch through a secondary program. Also, a firewall can do this too. It is possible Windows Firewall is even blocking this, so maybe check both those things.

To prevent this issue, always have your games that you are planning to mod on a SEPARATE drive than your OS drive. IF you only have one drive, make sure there's a separate folder on the root of the drive (C:/Steam) where Steam and it's games are installed. Get this nifty little batch file: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ It allows you to "take ownership" of a file (or files contained in a folder). Run that on the (C:/Steam) folder. UAC shouldn't bother it at all, then.
D_ManXX2 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 you have some mods that require fnis so if you cannot run fnis you need to switch these of: SexLab.esmSexLabAroused.esmSchlongs of Skyrim - Core.esm ZaZAnimationPack.esm ScocLB.esmApropos.espsr_FillHerUp.espdD - Realistic Ragdoll Force - Realistic.espRaceMenu.espRaceMenuPlugin.espSexLabDefeat.espSlaveTats.espSchlongs of Skyrim.espSOS - Smurf Average Addon.espSOS - VectorPlexus Muscular Addon.espSOS - VectorPlexus Regular Addon.espGetStripped.espMoreNastyCritters.espSexLabNudeCreatures.espSexLabNudeCreaturesDB.espSexLabNudeCreaturesDG.esp HentaiCreatures.espSexLab-AmorousAdventures.espSOS - Shop.espdD-No Spinning Death Animation.espSkyUI.espSexlabScocLB.esp or no your list is not stable at all. your list is only stable if these are active: Skyrim.esmUpdate.esmUnofficial Skyrim Patch.espDawnguard.esmUnofficial Dawnguard Patch.espDragonborn.esm nothing more from your other list.
wr1 Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 Have you run MO as administrator yet? Thanks for your review. FNIS seems to run through Windows, so I am considering possibly not using MO as a work-around. Assuming I am able to run FNIS, does the first list look OK? I currently have all my Steam stuff in C:\Games and am running Take Ownership on this folder right now. It actually seems to be taking a long while (like over half an hour, as it is hitting every file in Steam) so I'll update after it's done. EDIT: NOOOOOOO! I had such high hopes, but got the exact same error as before.
Anatriax Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 If you're modding with MO, ALL 3rd party programs that affect your Skyrim install MUST be ran through Mod Organizer, and the game MUST be launched through Mod Organizer or the effects won't take place (at least not properly) and you'll have more issues than you started with. Stick with MO. I'm SURE it's something silly that's being overlooked. Once you get it figured out, you're gonna feel like this: And then you'll NEVER go back to any tool other than Mod Organizer.

Dinosaurus Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 i still think it would help people help you if you confirmed you actually had FNIS installed correctly as the S.T.E.P guide i posted above says to install FNIS through MO. Don't just "assume" you did it right. Did you really do it the way the guide says? If you do have it installed correctly and you actually checked the S.T.E.P. guide and went through it step-by-step to be sure that is how you are installing FNIS through Mod Organizer, then it's easier for people to go through and suggest other things that might be causing it to go wrong. Are you running a software firewall? Windows firewall, Norton, ZoneAlarm, Comodo, etc? Even if your Steam programs are installed outside of "Program Files" a firewall could *still* be preventing Mod Organizer to "start FNIS" or other things properly because a firewall can mistakingly think that behaviour is "suspicious".. So you might have to make an explicit "exception" on your Firewall's "exception/exclusion list" to say to let Mod Organizer and FNIS do what they want together.

Run that on the (C:/Steam) folder. UAC shouldn't bother it at all, then. That is not actually entirely true. i have my Steam install of Skyrim on a completely different drive than my operating system and still had that problem. Altho i am still running Win7. i didn't have the UAC problem, i mean (and maybe that is the only issue you were addressing). My issue was the firewall one that i mention second in the post you quote. My software firewall absolutely was finding "Mod Organizer trying to launch another program" suspicious. And initially killing MO launching and running things like FNIS properly as it wasn't wanting to let FNIS write to MO folder or something. Even though MO and FNIS are both on my non-operating drive. So you cannot prevent such issue merely by installing Steam or your Steam games on a non-OS drive. Not if you're running a software firewall, anyway. My issue was quite similar to wr1's.. so that's why i suspected some settings might have gotten funny when upgrading to win10.

Condom's prevent pregnancy and STD's, even though they don't do it 100% of the time xD

So, I reviewed the STEP guide, and yes, I did follow exactly the steps in the STEP guide for MO. I am now looking at my firewall, Windows Firewall. Do you know which setting I would adjust or where I would make the exception to allow MO to run FNIS? When I look at the interface (see attached) to me it looks like it's all about internet stuff, but not about stuff on my hard drive. EDIT: To be clear the only security software I'm using is AVG Free, and the stuff that ships with Windows, i.e. Windows Firewall.
wr1 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 Also, according to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2715633the error code I get, "this application could not be started", means: The app is not configured in a way that makes it possible to determine the appropriate version of the .NET Framework runtime. The corresponding shim code is SHIM_NOVERSION_FOUND. That's a little strange because I know that 6 months ago I'd been able to run FNIS...

But.. now that you mention you run AVG it could be *that* instead. But i googled "Windows Firewall" and "Exceptions" and came up with this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/communicate-through-windows-firewall You might need to add Mod Organizer *and* FNIS to the exception list. Or add the whole "folder" of Mod Organizer (or Skyrim) to the Exception list.. depending on how Window's Firewall handles exceptions. i don't know how, because again i don't use that one. As for AVG i googled "AVG" and "Exceptions" https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-exclude-file-folder-or-website-from-AVG-scanning And i got that. So you can try *those* steps as well. Although i am not betting it is AVG over Windows Firewall, but it could be both.. or a combination of both. So you might have to make Mod Organizer exceptions, and/or Skyrim exceptions, and/or FNIS exceptions in both AVG and Windows Firewall. The exception may have to be for the entire *directory/folder structure* where those programs are, not just the ".exe" of those programs.

HMM then i'm out of ideas. Sorry. Hopefully someone else can come along with a new idea. Short of you briefly disabling Windows Firewall and then trying things out (you can physically disconnect your computer from the internet before doing this so you don't leave your computer "exposed", if you will, while the firewall is disconnected). But ya, basically out of ideas. i hope you managed to get it sorted somehow though.
