How do you justify your character wearing skimpy outfits? [Roleplaying]

A skimpy, or better yet, naked outfit isn't as illogical as you may think. You don't overheat from armor, you can sweat freely and move around easier. Minor wounds have a lesser chance of being infected when exposed to open air without clothes being trapped in them. On top of that being naked gives you a crazy feeling of invulnerability. This usually means difference between life and death on the battlefield. That's why Gauls, Germans, American Indians and warlike Bantu tribes prided themselves on appearing fully nude in battle, and often their most feared and aggressive warriors did so.

 

However it should be noted all historical documented cases (perhaps with the exception of Dahomey Amazons) involved exclusively men. A woman going out on the battlefield fully naked is sheer madness for a number of reasons. So it's not practical at all if you're a woman come to think of it. But since it looks sexy, I don't think about it at all.

 

Actually, ancient Briton/Celtic/Pick women DID charge into battle naked. It was actually a religious (pagan) belief that their "gods" would protect them and so they wore no armor. They also viewed it as a way to insult their opponents, showing that they so little fear of them as to charge into battle without clothing. She might be naked, but when a woman is covered in woad paint, wielding a axe and trying to kill you along with a huge crowd of other people, the last thing any male warrior thinks about is her state of undress.

 

Queen Boudica's rebel forces, a mix of men and women, use this tactic with some initial success against the Roman Legions.

 

 

It wasn't just the women that fought naked as i recall it was both sexes

 

In either cases someone painted blue wielding an axe rushing towards you would be pretty scary (although the romans must have learnt to deal with it)

 

 

 

I didn't mean to imply it was just the women, lol. Taken in context to what I was replying to, I was saying that in some culture the women also fought naked.

 

From what I understand of military history, unfortunately for Queen Boudica, her forces refused to fight in formation or any use of military tactics. They would just all charge at once in a mob everytime, despite the fact she tried to teach them Roman tactics (Boudica actually had a Roman education). Ultimately the Roman Phalanx and Shieldwall, plus the strategic use of their forces, eventually won the Roman the day.

Sometimes I use a summer climate overhaul. Otherwise ... I try to build the world with a mix of skimpy and non-skimpy and just assume that my character likes wearing skimpy stuff when she finds it. xD

Like some others, I run Tropical Skyrim, so it makes a bit more sense to have everyone dressed "lightly". I do shy away from the more ridiculous looking anime stuff though.

I find it funny in a thread about "justifying" wearing skimpy clothing, so many people come on here to justify not wearing skimpy clothing. Like they subconsciously feel its wrong to cover up so much beauty, lol. And for people who think Skyrim is too cold, here is how Skyrim women keep warm,

I avoid skimpy armors for skyrim because I feel pity for my female chars. Skyrim is like a freezer, their nipples must've fall off in that temperature!

However, that doesn't mean I don't use it. I only use skimpy outfits to walk around in the city or when she wants to please her man (or men if they feel that frisky) Or maybe when it look nice on her while she's a sex slave to some bandits or whatever.

 

Armors can be revealing, but not much, stuff like Hunting Grounds & Ebony Cleric Armor is just my favorite. Vanilla armors are bland most of the time, I prefer to look up armor mods & give that piece to that 1 char. to use from beginning to end.

I justify my char wearing skimpy armor by not being arrested yet and not having any hard to remove contraptions like these. After that happens skimpy armor can't be equipped anymore and there's no need to justify anything.

With the clothing replacers I have running, everyone in Skyrim looks like a semi clothed Greek god, and with the climate changing mods I have going, there's no snow so everyone's happy in a pleasant temperate climate.

There is a civil war in Skyrim which led to a material shortage, blacksmiths started making skimpier female armours to save materials and the blacksmiths are total pervs.

How I justify it:

 

For me, my Dragonborn is the type that is more for a practical set of armor that suits her fighting style than aesthetics.  She takes her tasks very seriously and would not leave anything to chance when it came to a knife and an opening in her armor.  

 

In the cold north of Skyrim?  My armor needs fur.

 

Fighting dragons?  My armor cannot leave anything exposed and needs to be riddled with resistance enchantments.

 

Currently, my Dragonborn's preferred set is the Saskia armor from Witcher 2 with a fur cloak and an armored fur hood.  Ebonyflesh spell to top it off.

 

BUT!  

 

My Dragonborn also travels with a companion, a male mage who is in a lustful love with her and would do anything to get her to wear very revealing clothing.  Whenever  they do come across some ancient set of armor that she casually tosses aside because it would leave her abdomen completely exposed, he takes it with him. 

 

"We could sell it for some good coin or maybe it has some enchantment we could learn from", he says.  

 

What my Dragonborn doesn't know, however, is that her companion is actually an incredibly powerful enchanter.  He puts an enchantment on the armor and comes to her with it telling her that it actually has a powerful ward ((higher armor rating)) on it that would likely deflect blows better than any steel or ebony and would be impossible to duplicate.  So she wears it reluctantly.  

 

The more revealing the armor the more embarassed and annoyed she is.  The more revealing the armor the more powerful the enchantment because her mage friend's abilities are powered by souls gems and his raging erection.

My character wears skimpy stuff or nothing at all because I, the omnipotent Goddess of Skyrim and CTD, demand it.

 

Unless she's in a blizzard in Dawnstar or something.  Then I let her bundle up, but only because watching her run around in the snow half-naked gives me the goosebumps.

Because I feel that when I play a beast race character they don't enjoy covering up head to toe. My argonian prefers to be covered since she doesn't enjoy the cold as much compared to my Khajiit who has no qualms about the temperature.

I have played with several motivations (and mostly armor sets do not align with these motivations, so I have not played some of them yet):

 

o Stealth: armor is noisy, and if you are trying to be quiet you need to make some sacrifices.

o Magic: armor interferes with enchantments, especially the stronger enchantments*

o Mobility: armor is heavy.

o Attractiveness: my character just enjoys looking better than most other people.

 

* I think this concept works rather well, socially, also - the social disapproval people get for wearing styles of clothing which do not match those around them corresponds rather nicely with the social disapproval nords have for magic. It might not be completely lore friendly - elder scrolls games have tended to favor the heavily armored battlemage - but it's a concept which has shown up in other role playing contexts. But since there are different styles of magic, I could make the player's magic use align this way.

 

Sadly for the npcs in my games, though, my character often winds up having to wear vanilla armor. Such is life, or something.

My usual Justification: I am a Deadric Succubus. I have little use for armour and the cold barely bothers me. (( preference towards open packed clothing because Wings when I am not trying to mix with the Mortals. Also I am using Nikitaa's Succubus Race over at NM))

I replace every vanilla outfit with a skimpy version so I fit right in! Hah!

 

Although in Oblivion, I was able to simply use sigil stones to make any clothing offer high protection regardless of design. Too bad there's no equivalent in Skyrim, not even an armor rating enchantment.
